The pathetic whining by the Yanqui Empire is touching. They had to explicitly state that they would not torture or summarily execute or have Snowden "shot while attempting to escape". Nobody believes them anyway.
Despite the fact that Putin relies on the political support of the homophobic Orthodox Church, he has the support of the majority of the Russian public in giving Snowden sanctuary. Furthermore, for some time now, the Putin government has come to the conclusion that they are not getting anything from their relationship with the USA.
They tried to have the Boston terrorist extradited ... but, since he was only killing Russians to that point, the Americans said no. Smart move, Uncle Sam. lol. Idiots. Their Russophobia and Cold War bumbling is killing Americans. Then there is the placing of new missiles in Europe, aimed at ...? Nobody believes the American lies that they are not aimed at Russia. Then there is the matter of goading the sociopath in Georgia, Saakashvili, with a billion a year in military "aid" to attack Ossetia in 2008. And above it all, the unrelenting low boil campaign of attacking Putin as undemocratic, yadda yadda. Nobody serious denies that Putin still has strong support.
However, for his own reasons, and because he can, and because by giving sanctuary the Putin government can exert some influence over Snowden, they're happy to urinate in Uncle Sam's face.
I must admit it's highly entertaining, worthy of emulation at every opportunity, and primae facie evidence that the Empire is in decline. Expect more of the same.

Many of the commenters to the article have got it right.
Although Germany might seem more alluring to Snowden than Russia right now, he could be making a grave mistake by going there.
Yeah, I'm thinking going to a country with multiple American military bases and open borders that'd be easy to slip him across after a snatch-and-grab might not be a smart move for him.
It's a tossup. In Russia he is there at Vladimir Putin's pleasure, and if that ever changes, he's done for. As well, I wouldn't say things are all that secure there either. If there was a strong desire to kill or kidnap someone, why would it be so much more difficult in Russia?

As strange as it may seem, Russia is perhaps the safest country for Snowden to be in right now.
As long as he doesn't stir things up with the U.S., as stipulated by Putin, Snowden is in safe hands in Russia.
It seems he has made the right decision re: Germany.
According to the BBC:

Perhaps.
I'd still say it's a tossup, if that. And that's not saying that I think Germany is all that much safer.
Only that his survival in Russia depends entirely on how valuable he is to the current leader.

If things change just enough that he is more valuable as a bargaining chip, then that is what he will be.
And besides, remember the 2002 Moscow theatre hostage taking? If Chechen rebels can pull that off, I am sure the U.S. can do a good deal more.
And if they actually had to cause an international incident, whom do you think they'd care more about pissing off?
Always wondered if the Russians turned Snowden. When the US were the good guy they were successful in turning Russians but those days are gone. There has to be 'some' Americans who are turned for ideological reasons. Most of us understand why Americans would choose to do so. Snowden's final destination could have been Russia all along but it's in Russia's best interest to keep that undercover. Or at least try to, because this planned kidnapping of Snowden shows clearly that they are literally ------ their pants over it
