According to the Pundits Guide twitter feed Rita Mahmoud from the Ivory Coast will represent he Ivory Coast, 8 year resident will represent the cpc. On the BQ front still nothing, but I guess thier too busy booting Maria unfairly from cacus, clear where they're priorities are.

Question Of The Day: Do you think the Tories will win Brandon Souris?

Brachina

http://www.punditsguide.ca/2013/09/brandon-liberal-nomination-over-befor...

Tories are turning in there memberships over what happened in Brandon. Now a Liberal has been acclaimed in Brandon. The only major party that will have a nomination contest will be the NDP in Brandon. Between what is going on in Brandon and that Freeland basically cheated to win in TC what going on in these bielections?

jfb

Freeland didn't cheat, just a USA parachute candidate brought in by Trudeau. Now it appears that another hand picked HarperCon/Trudeau Lib is eyeing a long held seat by another Liberal. Yeah, the libs are so progressive.

Liberal incumbent MP says he's staying put in Ottawa riding despite a star Liberal recruit eyeing his turf

OTTAWA - Incumbent Grit MP Mauril Belanger says he's staying put in Ottawa-Vanier despite a star Liberal recruit eyeing the downtown riding.

Rumours began swirling the riding was up for grabs when retired general Andrew Leslie joined Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau's team as an international affairs adviser.

Conservative sources said Leslie had been in talks with the Tories as a potential candidate and had floated running for election on Belanger's turf.

Belanger said Friday that Leslie is aware he plans to represent his constituents for years to come.

Brachina

Where I come from retroactively having members of your party disqualified from voting so you can win is cheating. And there are some Liberals who are very upset about it. Perhaps.it'd be more fair to say Trudeau cheated, I don't know how much influence Freeland had on that or not.

Anywho I agree parachuting someone from the States is just a bad idea on the part of the Libs.

jfb

Yes, and even some of their very prominent own see it in the same light:

Ray Heard ‏@RayHeard 13h

@RJMcClelland @dgardner @aaronwherry Very good point!. As a Grit I concede that. Alien Freeland is getting free ride from mainstream media

Would the recent provincial by-election losses by the Liberals in Windsor, London, and Etobicoke have any effect on the federal campaign in Toronto Centre, once it has been called?

Brachina

 We'll have to see.

jfb

It may well as, interestingly enough, some people are not aware of the difference between a federal byelection and a prov. byelection, so as we well know, and dependent on the popularity of the provincial govt has a spillover effect.

Hence, Wynne libs getting into bed with Hudak PCs and supporting a private members bill to provide EllisDon Construction company the ability to not have to hire a unionized workforce for their jobs may well bring out more labour support (volunteers and $) in a campaign for McQuaig.

TorStar and here's the spin

The two leaders on Monday defended their support of Tory MPP Monte McNaughton’s private member’s bill to free the construction giant from an obscure 55-year-old working agreement requiring it to hire only unionized workers.

While that accord had long ago fallen dormant, it was recently rediscovered by unions, potentially placing EllisDon at a disadvantage to its competitors.

“This is an anomalous situation. The situation arose in the 1950s. This is about bringing this company into line with all of the other construction companies in the province,” Wynne told reporters

And a great comment:

Ellis Don is a construction company. Construction is BOOMING in Ontario, and has been for years under these same union agreements. Ellis Don is one of the largest, if not the largest construction contractors in Ontario. The legislation is not about "bringing jobs back to the province". It's about driving wages down. Remember that if a union labourer makes $36 an hour, if you are a non union labourer, you are making more because of the union wage.

Sorry for the drift but it's about what plays out in a byelection. So we have Wynne who was preceived progressive now showing more and more her blue liberal colours in this above pivot. And the 3rd party leader, Trudeau who also is a blue liberal although he was just wants to portray that he's hip and cool so nobody will scratch below the surface.

So if you think that Labour is going to let this one pass and miss an opportunity to stand up in solidarity, with the right to work coming at us by both federal Cons, and provincial by libs and cons, you are kidding. Just saying.

Killarney Mayor Rick Pauls, who purchased a Conservative membership in order to have a say in the nomination process, has now announced his intention to run as an Independent in Brandon-Souris. Also, the nomination date for the NDP has been moved to September 26. Stay tuned.

Stéphane Moraille wins Bourassa nomination.

Does anyone know if it was close? First ballot?

And is this really in the arts/entertainment section ?

Are you sure it actually happened, Wilf? (Wink Wink!)

I just searched the CBC web-site for some info, and found no mention.  And everyone knows that if the CBC doesn't say that it happened....(You fill in the punch-line!Wink)

There was lots of media there and also Pundit's Guide. Try to keep up Wilf Laughing

Julie Demers' Facebook cover photo: "Une candidate qui vous ressemble, pour une deputee qui vous rassemble." Really?

". . . choisie par une centaine de militants . . ."

Unionist

Actually Wilf, the cover photo changed sometime ago... - and it deleted "pour une députée qui vous rassemble", but left in the strange part (very offensive if we're reading it right):

Hard to fathom - but these are the days of the charter of values. Unless someone has an innocent interpretation to offer.

ETA: The new graphic also looks strange - off-centre - and the original one is still available on the site. Very odd.

I agree it looks terrible given the bruhaha over the charter.

I understand she was making the case for being the only candidate who has lived in the riding for more than a couple of months.  Might it have been a clumsy attempt at promoting herself as a local?

mark_alfred

Found an interview with Stéphane Moraille on the CBC when she was first running.  She strikes me as a very cool person.

I also forgot to mention that when Trudeau visited Brandon, former PC MP Rick Borotsik had his picture with Trudeau on the front page.

Stephane also speaks Italian, Spanish, an African language, Creole according to PG.

Also in Provencer thier is a candiate called Natalie, the nomination meeting is Oct 6th.

David Young

Perhaps there might even be a fifth by-election, in Peterborough, if Del Mastro decides it's not worth the fight.

He only needs to wait 12 years before he collects his parliamentary pension.

The title sounds a bit sarcastic. What are his chances realistically?

The proper Polish pronunciation is shtchepanski, with the "sh" and the "tch" clearly and separately enunciated. A24 would know better whether his family has simplified the pronunciation for non-Poles.

I think that's exactly what it was, Lou.

But did someone in her team recognize the dog-whistle possibility and decide to run with it anyway? Impossible to know.

With an Independent and Liberal candidate potentially splitting the right-wing vote 3 ways, this riding is now in play.

Aristotleded24

Rick Pauls has now announced that he will contest the Liberal nomination. This makes it very interesting, as a strong Conservative and Liberal will at least divide the right-wing vote, so the bar that the NDP has to clear to win the seat will drop.

Brachina

 Yep.

Stephane is making a major issue out of the Secular Charter in Broussa, and the NDP is paying Julius Grey, a name ironically fliated around as a possible candiate for this byelection in earilier days, to challenge the secular charter in court.

With all the speculation of a provincial election in Quebec called for December 9, this would guarantee that any by-elections would not come untill 2014, wouldn't it?

Brachina

No.

Yeah, but we will now have this same bullshit to deal with:

Quote:
Manitoba Poll Suggests Trudeau Liberals Have Replaced NDP As Main Tory Alternative

As voters in two Manitoba ridings wait for an impending byelection call, a new poll shows the Liberals have made significant gains in the province and have supplanted New Democrats as the main alternative to Stephen Harper.

The poll by Winnipeg-based Probe Research for The Winnipeg Free Press, which surveyed 1,002 people in late September, still gave Conservatives the lead in the province, with 42 per cent to 32 per cent for the Liberals. But that represents a dramatic shift since the 2011 election: a drop of 11 points for the Tories and a gain of 15 for the Liberals, giving Grits their best numbers since the 2004 election when they won three of the province's 14 seats. They currently hold only one.

The New Democrats placed third with 22 per cent, a drop of four points since the last election, while the Greens held steady with four per cent support.

The poll shows Liberals trailing the Conservatives by only two points in Winnipeg. Outside of the provincial capital, where two byelections in Brandon-Souris and Provencher will be held, the Conservatives had a 22-point lead. Even so, that is radically different from the last election when the Liberals took just seven per cent of the vote. The poll now gives them 28 per cent in the region.

Notice that the Free Press article doesn't even mention the NDP at all, so we have no idea where they are at. They have established a 20% floor in Brandon for the last little bit. It's tough, but it just means we have work to do. I heard Mulcair say on Power and Politics that he will be around for the Manitoba by-elections, let's hope he sets a date.

News for the Bourassa by-election:

Ex-NHLer turned politician Georges Laraque facing fraud charges

It's too bad. Political opinions aside, Laraque seemed like a decent person, and I was excited to see people of color getting their fair share of political opportunities. There's a good chance he might be innocent. But we live in a "guilty until proven innocent" culture when it comes to high profile crimes. Some people will give him the benefit of the doubt, but some people who would have voted for him will see this as a a cloud over his reputation.

Stockholm

Laraque has stepped down as Green candidate in Bourassa and as Elizabeth May's Deputy leader and shadow minister of Foreign Affairs and Finance and whatever. This will be quite a blow to the Green Party which is thought to have already spent a vast sum from its meager funds in Bourassa renting a high end HQ, paying organizers from other provinces and printing up glossy leaflets...now its ALL for nothing.

I agree that its too bad to see this happen to a person of colour etc... but the NDP, Liberal and Tory candidates in Bourassa are all people of colour too (the BQ alas has a colourless candidate)

Really?? Who are the the Bloc and Tory candidates?

I didn't see anything mentioned here about them, but then again, I think this thread has been focused on the other federal ridings.

The Tory is from the Ivory Coast originally and by colourless BQ candiate it means they don't have one yet. I imagine they find someone to run for them eventually.

jfb

It is too bad too. However, the election has not been called yet and it could perhaps be resolved by the time it is. Although I doubt the wheels of justice will be accommodating.

Actually the BQ has a candidate Nicolas Duranleau - who appears to have both colourless skin AND a colourless personality!

Interesting that there are almost 100,000 eligible voters in Toronto Centre and this is the second time you have reported being polled and most riding polls have a sample of about 500 or so...its like lightning has struck twice!

Brachina

I guess the other 99,500 voters in the riding declined to answer ;p this may be a skewed poll :P I suggest taking the results with a grain of salt.

Are you suggesting tht i am not a representative sample?

Polling is far less scientific than they make it out to be, especially in Canada. It must be a great business to be in, because people pay for it no matter how bad your predictions are. Too bad for the rest of us who actually suffer consequences when we don't do our job.

trotwood73

I'm presently at the General Council of the Quebec Wing of the NDP in Trois-Rivière, Qc. It has just been announced that the partial election has been called in Bourassa for Nov 25.

CBC just has it under BREAKING news: PM Harper announces 4 byelections for Nov. 25.

Stockholm

The byelections have been called for November 25!!

Let the real fun begin!
