Ontario Minimum Wage to Go Up to $11 An Hour

"Ontario will announce an increase in the minimum wage to about $11 an hour."

"I am working poor".

And when Ontario raises it .75 cents (June 1) she still will be. Class war continues...

Time to stop by-the-hour wages.

Starting salaries should be at minimum $20K/per year.

10$/hour for a 40hr work week is $20, 800

11$ /hour for 37.5 hour week week (the norm for those who dont get a paid lunch) is $21,450/yr

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

Is that after or before taxes?

I worked at $10/h and it worked out much less than $20K/yr (at 40 hrs/wk)

Also for the greedhead owners...More AFFORDABLE housing would help too.

Atleast that way, they wouldn't have to pay $15 or $16/h for workers to keep up with the price of living.

Study: Fair Minimum Wage Double Obama-Backed $10.10

President Obama hit the road Wednesday one day after his State of the Union vow to take executive action should Republicans thwart his efforts on economic progress. Speaking at a Costco store in Maryland, Obama touted his plan to boost the minimum wage of federal contractors to $10.10 an hour.

quote:

Obama is also backing a congressional bill that would raise the minimum wage for all Americans to $10.10. But a new analysis from the Center for Economic and Policy Research says that if the minimum wage were kept in line with productivity gains since 1968, it would now be more than double that amount, at $21.72.

@AdrianMorrow: @andreahorwath seemed to get annoyed when reporters pressed her on minimum wage, asked us to move on to something else. #onpoli

@AdrianMorrow: "I think I've pretty much answered all the questions on that," she said "I've given you the response I'm prepared to give." #onpoli

All amounts quoted are before taxes. Whenever anyone says you need xk as a salary or living wage etc, it is before taxes

Then I stand by my first post...Salaries should start at a minimum of $20K annually (before taxes ofcourse)

Bacchus

And I stand by mine. $10/hour is over 20k a year before taxes for a 40hr work week

Good for you,Bacchus for pointing out that I forgot to mention $20 000 clear....I think the implication was clear...I guess you can't please the argumentative.

LOL I demand submission to my authorataaaay

Actually I thought I had read you wrong and decided to post to make sure

Why is Horwath suddenly so tongue tied? Under her leadership, the NDP has transmogrified itself from a progressive to a populist party. Now, the third party is riding high in the polls and dreams of a breakthrough. She wants to broaden her appeal in the vote-rich middle-class suburbs and among small business owners by downplaying the party’s radical roots. Poverty is not a rich source of votes.

I would not be sure that the phrase "poverty is not a ruch source of votes" is accurate. What is surprising about poverty is that it is growing fastest in the illusionary "middle class suburbs." They may look "middle class," but with the average household owing over $1.50 in debt for every dollar of income (I think) there's many people that if they are not in poverty are pretty damn close.

And yet the Ontario NDP doesn't think it's going to come under fire for running a "union boss" in one of the constituencies?

Small business has spoken: poor workers can wait.

Well done Andrea, a clever way to deflecting the attacks of both Liberals and those against raising the minium wage while at the same time making peace with antipoverty activists, and reaching out to small business community and creating a sense of fairness. My only criticism is it could be higher, but its a start and its higher then the liberals. I also like that its indexed to inflation.

I told you guys that Andrea would reveal her hand at a time of her own choosing. Andrea like any wise leader likes to keep control of her message.

 I'm very pleased.

Andrea Horwath's proposal to increase the minimum wage to $12/hour is almost similar to Kathleen Wynne's proposal to raise the minimum wage adjusted to cost-of-living increases if at 3% per year.

Another home run for Jan. So it looks like another kept promise for Andrea Horwath.

Just to put the cruel and barbaric situation of the working poor in Ontario into perspective, there's this:

World's Highest Minimum Wage on Ballot in Switzerland

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-04-13/world-leading-25-hourly-wage-fl...

"The Swiss will vote in a national referendum May 18 on whether to create a minimum wage of 22 francs ($25) per hour, or 4,000 francs a month. While about 90% of workers in Switzerland already earn more than that, employers say setting Switzerland's first national wage floor would push up salaries throughout the economy. When adjusted for currency and purchasing power, it would be the highest minimum in the world.."
