Former MP Carolyn Parrish just accused MP Eve Adams of lying tweetin...

"Eve Adams MP fibs on CP24! Says old riding split into 5! NOT! Left town because afraid of Nav Bains in Miss-Malton.Was her home base 11yrs!"

Previously she tweeted about Eve

And what does this have to do with any potential by-elections this year, terrytowel?

Ooops! Wrong thread.

I'll add they're still searching for female and racial minorities to try and win the nomination. If not its not for lack of trying so its not the NDPs fault.

According to Susan Delcourt no Liberal was available to discuss open nominations. Big surprise.

We also have the best record of getting them elected after their nominations too!

On Huff Post, all they do is say the leader has the right to intervene. You just know if Mulcair did this, they'd be all over it. They are such hypocrites these Libs. I can't stand them.

True, however at this point the NDP has only won 2 by-election seats since 2011, originally 1 man and 1 woman, now both men and NDP holds.
The CPC has won 4 by-election seats, all CPC holds, originally 3 men and 1 women, now the same but not in the same riding.
The LPC has won 3 by-election seats, all originally men, one originally CPC, now 2 women and 1 man.

Doesn't the Federal NDP have the same ground game and resources as the Provinical NDP

Andrea Horwath and her team have been able to pull off a victory and win seats from the Libs and Cons. By having an excellent ground game and E-Day team.

Is the NDP outspent on the Federal level than the Pronvincial level?

I think it's also a function of Liberal party strength. Federally they have had years to decay to disastrous levels of voter support, and now the recovery has started, while the NDP has slid from their peak. Hence the LPC is the only party to have won a non-incumbent seat in a by-election since 2011, not surprisingly from the decaying CPC government. The OLP meanwhile is in government, still on a very gradual downward slide, and has lost 4 seats in by-elections, one to PC and 3 to NDP, plus one PC seat lost to NDP.

Gerry Caplan was on Power & Politics today and commenting on the Trinity-Spadina dispute, he said all National Parties should have the ability to attract star candidates and place them in winable ridings. He said Trudeau mistake was not being honest about that, as all parties do it.

Brachina

I agree with Caplan, the promise was a short sighted move to began with.

Stockholm

Except that by all accounts - there is no "star candidate" lined up in Trinity-Spadina for the Liberals. They just don't want Innes - but they don't appear to have anyone better.

The NDP promises "open nominations" and doesn't seem to have any problem keeping that promise. Linda McQuaig was a "star candidate" and she had to win a contested nomination fair and square

Yeah, but it doesn't count because Mulcair = Harper, says the Libs. Its crazy!

Just wait, you never know who is lurking in the wings. Seamus O'Regan name was floated as a potential candidate on Power and Politics last night. He and Justin are pretty tight.

Stockholm wrote:

Other than Joe Cressy, who else is going for the nomination for the NDP in Trinity-Spadina? Or maybe he is such a shoo-in, other potential nominees have assumed that he will win the nomination hands down.So he will probbaly get acclaimed as he is such a star.

On the same program Gerry Caplan said Joe Cressy has four times the political experience that Justin Trudeau currently has.

Stockholm

All of whihc goes to show that if a truly strong candidate comes forward - the riding association can and will close ranks and acclaim that person on their own - there is no need for the leader to intervene and rig the process.

Brachina

When did we promise open nominations in the NDP?

Isn't Seamus on Canada AM? I doubt he'll.drop.that gig for a likely lose in TS.

As has been pointed out everywhere, no one has absolutely open nominations.

The ones PROMISING open nominations, are the ones whose practice is routinely anything but. [Libs and Cons]

NDP nominations are not without leverage and manouvering from the centre. But the historical EXPECTATION has always been open nominations, so there is no reason to promise them.

Brachina get with the program! He left CTV about a year ago. Been floating around freelancing with various talk-radio stations. He was floated as a potential candidate in Toronto Center, but Freeland had that nomination all sewn up. So he took a pass.

Brachina

Sorry I watch BT, I have no use for the Boring Canada AM. And is Seamus runs the only threat to the NDP he'll bring is putting our voters to sleep!

I must admit, that story makes me like him a lot more already. :)

Check out also the footage of his father Gordon speaking out against the 1981 bathhouse raids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZjzKLb0No4

You can really see the resemblance - Gordon was quite a handsome young man.

If I lived in TS Joe would have my vote!

Stockholm

The rumored poll of Trinity Spadina is finally posted and it has the NDP leading the Liberals 46-32...and that was a poll done before all the bad publicity about Trudeau slandering Christine Innes etc...it's interesting how the Toronto Star would breathlessly report on every single solitary poll showing the Liberals ahead in Toronto Centre but apparently decided that a poll showing the NDP ahead in Trinity Spadina was not newsworthy

Looks like it's somewhere between the gay equivalent of 4chan and Reddit. All gossip. But I suppose it would be a difficult story to authenticate.

Can you name a specific issue where you think he's too rightwing within the NDP universe? Or are you just projecting an ideology on him because he looks like he probably wears two socks that are the same colour?

No I'm not "projecting" anything, other than what I witnessed of his behaviour at various NDP events: arrogance and rudeness.

It seems as if you're not an insider, viewed as important or connected, or don't have a donation to make, you're not even worthy of acknowledgement (the [url=http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/ndp-wants-paid-staff-to-be-nice-to-campaign... behaviour[/url] of many hacks, but not all, which turns people off from the party). Myself and many others have experienced this, and a close friend has told him this more than once, that you can't treat party supporters and members that way, that we're all on the same team and being rude only alienates people.

Regardless, if he's nominated to be the candidate, I would want him to win the by-election and beat the Liberals.

Stockholm

I asked you about what you know of his policies and you answer about his personality.

Interesting because I sent him a tweet the other day to let him know about a story written about him. I'm just a nobody. But I sent him the tweet the same time Matt Galloway of the CBC sent him a tweet. He acknowledged Matt's tweet, but ignored me!

Oh well he is such a big star, that he doesn't have time for peons like me!

mark_alfred

I send tweets to various politicians and/or well known journalists and rarely hear back from them.  The only ones I recall actually responding are Edward Keenan and Tony Clement.  I'm not a huge Twitter user, and certainly don't place too much importance in it.  It is what it is, I suppose.  For that matter, the Internet is what it is, I suppose.  I don't place too much importance on it.  Now if I'm talking face to face with someone and he/she gives me cold stony silence, then I may have a harsh judgement about him/her.

He was obviously very smart since its never a good idea for public figures to get into twitter exchanges with people who are trying to make them look bad or are trying to provoke them into tweeting something they shouldn't. In fact I would advise politicians never to respond to any tweets directed at them unless its just to say "Thank you for your support"

He's vehemently against socialism and was gloating to such an extent that he was acting like a pompous assclown after the new preamble for the federal party's constitution was "approved" at Montreal2013.

There might be an upcoming by-election in Brampton-Springdale provincially?

Linda Jeffrey Resigned from Cabinet and maybe her seat to run for Mayor. How was her record on Unions and workers?

Perhaps I should have been more specific when I started this thread, but this discussion is about federal politics, not provincial.

Moderators, could someone change the title to 'Federal By-Elections, 2014 Edition'?

Besides, with the odds of a provincial election in Ontario this spring, I can't see there being any more by-elections if any seats become vacant, unless the government survives the budget vote.

The new preamble to the party constitution passed with over 80% support at the convention, so basically you're saying he is a mainstream New Democrat and not part of the FightBack clutching and totally marginalized so-called Socialist Caucus. Thanks for telling us that Cressy occupies the same ideological space as Olivia Chow and Libby Davies.

terrytowel

Today on Power & Politics Liberal Rob Silver said he was shocked when Thomas Mulcair endorsed Joe Cressy by saying "He's our canddiate" in Trinity-Spadina. He said it goes against the NDP constitution, a NDP party leader endorsing a candidate running for a nomination.

David Young

And if Jack Layton had walked on water, Rob Silver would have screamed 'Jack Layton can't swim!'

Support or opposition to the new preamble says nothing about whether one is a socialist or not. It's a vague, poorly written, and essentially serves no purpose, except to say that we don't believe in anything in particular. Which was the point I think.

Has anyone else actually announced they are running for the nomination? If not, then it is technically true that "he's our [only] candidate [for this nomination] so far".
