People's social forum planning begins

quote:

Whatever else it is, the social forum movement has created occasions on which people can gather and discuss and debate about strategy and long-term goals. The peoples' social forum in what is called Canada (Turtle Island), planned for late 2014, will be another such occasion. The entire left and all movements for social justice in Canada should be there to make it as strong and effective as possible. The meeting in Ottawa was a promising beginning; while sharing all of the aspects, both positive and negative, described above, it was also a very good place to start to build towards what may be a historic opportunity for strengthening resistance to neoliberalism on Turtle Island.

We are pleased to launch the first installment in a series of online viewpoints, “Visions of the Left.” In this first piece, author and activist Derrick O’Keefe makes the case that the Peoples’ Social Forum is a necessary venue for grassroots change.

In the coming weeks, the Visions of the Left series will present ideas and views from leading voices on the Left. They will discuss how to move forward in the face of serious ecological, social, military and economic challenges in the struggle for a better world. We look forward to sharing and discussing these views with you. Feedback and constructive engagement is highly encouraged.

Why we need the Peoples’ Social Forum

There are many important ongoing political struggles that demand our attention and action in Canada. In some cases, the resistance is even dynamic and inspiring — like the Indigenous-led wall of opposition to expanding the tar sands and building new export pipeline mega-projects.

But we need to be honest: there is a void in this country, the political silences are deafening. Beyond some very marginal formations and small publications, the left is missing. It’s just not there, organizationally. It’s barely there in the discussion at all, outside of a few major centres.

I know that this absence is part of a long-term trend, but I think we’re in a new phase now with the NDP acting more than ever as a “government-in-waiting.” With their parliamentary caucus more muzzled — or self-censoring — than ever, there is no political expression for many of the basic demands of the Left....

Very interesting. Thanks!

"Toward" is Merkin English though... I'll write to them.

lagatta

"Merkin" had become a somewhat jocular expression for (US)American, and hence US American English. I'm just pissed off by all the Merkin spellings and syntax I'd been seeing of late...

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

I've been involved with the BC sub-committee of the social forum process. The BC-subcommitte has had three meetings to date -- One in the third week of November, one at the end of the first week of December, and one at the beginning of January. I attended the second and third meetings of the BC sub-committee -- I was unable to attend the first meeting.

There has been insufficient effort to publicize these meetings, which is probably why you havn't heard of them, epaulo. I only learned about the December meeting because I was at a different meeting a week earlier where Brigette announced it. The January meeting was not publicly announced.

The BC sub-committe decided that we want the focus of the people's social forum to be anti-neoliberal. Alternatives for their part appears to have already decided that the focus will be anti-Harper, as all pronoucements I've seen from the national level claim that this is the focus. This, among other things seems to belie the claim that this is a grassroots process. It could also explain Nora's claim that there was no discussion of common goals at the meeting in Ottawa this weekend.

The relationship of this project to the NDP remains a key concern for me. While I agree that the NDP is the only vehicle available to defeat Harper in 2015, I also believe that the NDP is a wholly inadequate vehicle to fight global warming and achieve real social change, and I believe a mass anti-capitalist party is ultimately needed in this country.

The thing is that because Alternatives is generally pro-NDP, how much space will there be within this process for views that go beyond what the NDP advocates. There is a real danger that this social forum process could be used as a means of firing up movement activists to help elect the NDP in 2015. There will no dobut be some folks within what passes for the left in this country who would want the end outcome of such a social forum process to be a statement that calls for the defeat of Harper and the election of the NDP. To me this would be a colossal failure.

I'd want a social forum that could discuss, among other things:

- shutting down the tar sands

- getting rid of capitalism

- The creation of a mass anti-capitalist party

- Opposition to U.S. and Canadian imperialism

- Support for global movements fighting for change, particularly the radical social movements in Latin America

- The fight for justice for the peoples of Palestine, Afghanistan, and Haiti

..your welcome lagatta. if you don't mind, what do you mean by merkin english?

People’s Social Forum in 2014 and the World Social Forum in 2016

While expressing support for the idea of eventually holding a World Social Forum (WSF) in Montreal, the board of Alternatives nonetheless spoke out against the project to hold one in 2015. This was in order to protect the mobilization for Peoples Social Forum (PSF) in 2014, which enjoys significant support from civil society organizations in Quebec, Canada and the first nations. In this context, we welcome the decision of the International Council of the WSF to recognize Tunisia as a new site for the next WSF in 2015. But at the same time, the IC also began to consider a new WSF in 2016, recognizing that Montreal could be a host, possibly in a polycentric model with India.

This decision of the IC is not a definitive one. This decision, as far as Montreal is considered, depends on the success of the PSF in 2014. It is then for us to overcome the issue of dispersion of forces and focus on this first event that is the PSF 2014....

http://www.alterinter.org/spip.php?article4146

eta:

To hold the PSF in August 2014 is unavoidable. It already involves more than 50 progressive organizations from Canada, Quebec and indigenous communities. The event itself is aiming to bring together over 10 000 people making this a unique and a historic event in Canada. Nothing close to this has been accomplished in the past. The People’s Social Forum is aiming to construct a real pan-Canadian extra-parliamentary opposition to the austerity measures being imposed by the present federal government.

I'm one of the organizers for our local Regional Social Forum and was asked the other day if I could step in as a local rep to the PSF meetings. I'm really jazzed about it, and I'm pretty excited to see what the World Social Forum will look like.

epaulo13, I saw the new logo this past weekend, and see they decided to go the more ant-colonialist route. A good decision, I think.

I hope not. Like the bird, but the map of Canada with no specificity of Québec would NOT sit well with social movement people here.

MegB

Epaulo13, no, not that logo. The one they were using had symbols representing First Nations, Quebec, and Canada. The Original People's Caucus objected to the Canadian flag being included, as it represents an oppressive colonialist construct. The PSF have put together a new logo, but the artwork is still in process, so the previous logo is still in use at their website.

epaulo13

..good, i look forward to seeing the new artwork.

Council of Canadians supports the Peoples Social Forum

The Peoples Social Forum will take place this coming Thursday August 21 to Sunday August 24 at the University of Ottawa.

An early planning document identified the forum's objectives to: "1) Bring together, assemble, combine and reduce the isolation of the progressive groups and individuals belonging to the concerned communities; 2) Promote the convergence of large strategic struggles against neoliberal and neoconservative politics in Canada; 3) Promote public debate, public expression and political education."

It is hoped that the social forum could bring together as many as 10,000 people from across the country....

Peoples Social Forum, August 21-24 Ottawa

Thousands of people are expected to gather in Ottawa from August 21-24, 2014 for the upcoming People’s Social Forum. Manitoba activists have a key role to play in this significant political moment that will bring social movements together from coast to coast.

The goal of the Peoples Social Forum is to build a united and cohesive front against the Conservative corporate agenda, austerity and privatization. A Labour Caucus has been established that, so far, includes  the FTQ, OFL, CUPE, CUPW, PSAC, CSQ, CSN, among others.  It's role is to develop and organize labour’s participation in the Peoples Social Forum.  Discussions are currently taking place with more unions, such as UNIFOR and USW, to expand the Labour Caucus.

The Forum secretariat, comprised of three full-time staff has now been set up in Ottawa. Sister Anna Collins has been hired as the Aboriginal coordinator and she has also been charged with developing expansion committees on the Prairies.

The Labour Caucus has also formulated two themes to take to the program committee: "Work in the 21st Century" and "Defending the Social Safety Net and the Role of the State".  These more general themes encompass Labour’s concerns but are also formulated in such a way as to favour collaboration with the networks, common fronts and alliances that we are active in. Labour's social justice allies are encouraged to join  the Peoples Social Forum.

Although I appreciate all independent civil movements for discussion and strategic action..I remain confused and skeptical about such a proposed goal.......surely the problem is the system, the political system, the economic system, the bureaucratic fascist system, the police state system we have in this country..it´s not a Conservative corporate agenda...as all the political parties in canada support this agenda...

You're quite right about the system being deeply flawed. The problem with attempting to address that is that entrenched systems are extremely difficult to change without massive resources. What we can do is use what exists to our own advantage, which is a more attainable goal than systemic change. What the PSF hopes to do is come up with strategies to achieve progressive outcomes. Reference to the Conservative corporate agenda refers to the party in power. If it were Liberals in power it would be the Liberal corporate agenda, or NDP corporate agenda, etc. The reason why the PSF is non-partisan is that it recognizes that it is the system that facilitates whomever is in power, regardless of party affiliation. It is the reality we have to recognize and strategize around for progressive change. It also recognizes that this is a long-term struggle, with many and diverse allies, and that pressure needs to be applied continuously and increasingly, because this is how progressive movements succeed.

epaulo13

iyraste1313

..i have concerns as well. there are different agendas going into this forum. one is that there is an electoral remedy to our problems. the port elgin proposal is key in my opinion. it was postponed at the initial launching of psf until this session. i wait to see the agenda. it is worth reading this thread from the begining to get a overview.

Organize together to defeat the corporate agenda: The Port Elgin Coalition Proposal

quote:

The Proposal

● In Québec, the “Red Hand Coalition” was successful in bringing together labour, student unions, community groups and women’s organizations, and was a key element in building wider solidarity with the student strike. This kind of broad-based coalition can serve as a model for the development of regional coalitions in other parts of Canada that would be autonomous and able to organize their own actions, using a democratic and horizontal model of organization.

● Regional coalitions based on assemblies, including provincial assemblies alongside Indigenous assemblies, would link up in a pan-Canadian Coordinating Assembly. The regional coalitions would build representative structures inclusive to racialized, immigrant, and other communities. The pan-Canadian Coordinating Assembly would identify common campaign issues and projects and map out strategies of action. The coordinating assembly should be multi-national, with Québec, Canada and Indigenous Peoples represented as distinct but equal components. Relations between them would be guided by protocols in the spirit of the original wampums, agreements of coexistence, respect, and distinctness between Indigenous and non-Indigenous nations.

● We aim to create new forms of solidarity, while recognizing the different interests and inequalities that have emerged from histories of colonialism, patriarchy and oppression. We believe new forms of solidarity are essential to change the long-term political dynamics in Canada. Our proposal does not preclude other regional or provincial autonomies, or preclude Indigenous participants from participating in other regional assemblies and bodies. But it recognizes as central to this political project the creation of an alliance built around an Indigenous, Quebec, and Canada triangle.

● This form of organizing could handle several overarching issues. However, we believe a key organizing opportunity exists around the need for an alternative, just energy economy, which can be a gateway issue to garner broad interest and support, and simultaneously fight for economic and climate justice. Winning such an agenda would transition our society away from dependence on fossil fuels, combat the austerity agenda by creating more democratic, equitable and re-localized economies, and recognize and respect Aboriginal Rights, Aboriginal Title and Treaties. Corporate capture of the political process in the pursuit of reckless resource development has also eroded democracy, of deep concern to many across Canada. Of course, this proposed focus would have to be discussed and decided upon by the Coordinating assembly.

● This could open the door to organizing community, kitchen and neighborhood assemblies to encourage mobilization at the local level, or mobilizing strategies like a people's energy coalition on the model of the successful People’s Food Commission of the 1980s.

¨The problem with attempting to address that is that entrenched systems are extremely difficult to change without massive resources¨

No! What is needed is a strategy to remove ourselves from this totally corrupt system, what we can do in our daily lives, the daily choices we make. The kind of organizations we need to build and above all the kind of economics and finance we need to create.

This means only the resources we each have access to. It must be done now before the global deck of cards of finance capital implodes!

Gradualist approaches do not work! Sure we must continue to operate in the system for survival, but while we put alternative models in place. That is the key!
We must put alternative models in place!
This is what the discussions must revolve around!

¨We aim to create new forms of solidarity¨

Sure this is great and essential to build grass roots Assembly, consensus based Indigenous Non Indigenous Assembly...etc.

But around what!

There must be some fundamental agreements in place!

A real Charter of Rights for the individual, for the community, for the ecosystem!

Banking based on the system of leveraged derivative finance capital must be out!

A Charter recognizing Indigenous rights to territorial self determination is a must!!

Decentralized autonomy is a must!

Gradualist assemblies for discussion won`t work as these fundamentals won`t be dealt with under the rubric that ´we can`t do it now

...I have to chuckle about the too expensive argument, as I watch my friends without a centavo in their pockets, going round the country organizing with the communities into their alternatives...their defense against corporate ecocide, their economic projects, their democratic assemblies.....

epaulo13

..imho. i see the eglin proposal as growing out of the idle no more, que students, militant unionism and pipeline resistance. this in turn has been influeanced /a part of the larger global resistance movements ie arab spring, southern europe, the occupy and of course the south american experience. how progressives view the world today is not a concern to me. more to the point is the organizations needed where we can express our resistance, our solutions in a collective way. thus the elgin proposal. it's not like the forum is an empty vessel.

..my primary concern is that the coming federal election becomes the primary focus of the forum. with the elgin proposal again being shoved onto a back burner when in fact no federal political party will resolve the issues we face by way of international agreements, theft of natural resources, abuse of first people or destruction of the environment. keep in mind how water will grow as an issue into a crisis. this will be short term thinking. and frankly a mistake that will set back our opportunities to organize for both resistance to the current onslaught and implementing solutions towards a better world.

The 2014 Peoples’ Social Forum: Organizing the fight against the Right

The first ever pan-Canadian social forum will be held this year in Ottawa from August 21 to 24. More than 10,000 participants from all over Canada are expected to come to the University of Ottawa to discuss ways and means of combating the austerity policies of the Harper regime and the provincial governments.

While we have been witness to often spirited resistance in many spaces and places — the Québec student strike, the indigenous Idle No More movement, and the rallies against the Enbridge and TransCanada pipelines — there has not yet been a united Canada-wide response. What are the prospects for a pan-Canadian fightback?...

Get Intersectional! (Or, Why Your Movement Can't Go It Alone)

"Intersectionality" has evolved from a theory of how oppression works to a notion of how people can fight it.

"There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives." –Audre Lorde

Here’s the scenario: This year’s epic drought devastates agriculture in California. Water use is rationed, so the cost of grain goes up, and, because cattle eat grain, the cost of beef goes up too. To cut expenses, the owners of a fast food restaurant cut a worker's wages and benefits by a couple bucks an hour. Next month he won’t be able to send money to his wife and kids back in Mexico, where the same drought is also decimating farms—and may be contributing to even more northward migration.

What’s the origin of the restaurant worker’s predicament?....

Tutu: Climate Crisis Demands 'Anti-Apartheid-Style Boycott' of Fossil Fuel Industry

Nobel laureate says 'people of conscience' must break ties with oil and gas companies that are destroying planet's future

Archbishop of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu is saying their is no longer any excuse for not doing everything humanly possible to fight climate change and called on Thursday for an international "anti-apartheid-style boycott" against the fossil fuel industry.

In a striking essay and call to action in the Guardian newspaper, Tutu writes: "People of conscience need to break their ties with corporations financing the injustice of climate change."

As examples, Tutu said people can and should boycott events, sports teams and media outlets sponsored by oil and gas companies. He also touted divestment by municipalities and universities have broken ties with the industry and called for public health warnings against products associated with the carbon-reliant economy.

"We cannot necessarily bankrupt the fossil fuel industry," said Tutu. "But we can take steps to reduce its political clout, and hold those who rake in the profits accountable for cleaning up the mess."...

Tutu: Climate Crisis Demands 'Anti-Apartheid-Style Boycott' of Fossil Fuel Industry...

What is needed to build a real social movement for transformation is a total boycott on resource corporations, financial corporations, food processing corporations!
What are the strategies and lifestyle changes needed to do this?

What kind of political formation is crucial to promote this?

..sorry. i missed this. i would like to try and answer your questions this way. i would like to add 2 more question and those would be: who will make our decisions and how. to get a look at that i go to the que students and the antipipeline alliances that just keeps growing and amazing. this is the way forward. we don't need any new strucctures but if we do we will build them as needed. such as the social forum where people have a place to come together. but already the streets are embroiled in life struggles. and people are sharing this info. people struggling to get out of this epic disaster we are faced with. i just posted a piece in the climate change thread that exposes climate change as violence. it's frightning what is coming. our time is limited before they come and knock us in the head. we need to make this work. imho

..for no other reason then we are organized to put back a better world once the whole shitpile collapses.

What are the strategies and lifestyle changes needed to do this?...

I apologize if I was not clear enough. Sure there are plenty of attempts to block the resource extraction mega project industrial capitalist system, playing out here in Canada.

What is not so evident are the ways people are uniting to create an alternative parallel system outside the controls of the corporations and their bureaucrats in government.

This is what must be emphasized in anything like a social forum.

Sure I meet some people with their gardens and parcels of rural land, attempts at some cooperative efforts. But to be done in some cooperative collaborative fashion to engage a growing populatiion in the support of such efforts?

We need to replace the system of production with a human centred ecology based system. Not just a few individualistic effortas, but on a massive promotional scale...This is why I always come back to the need of a political formation. With this very project in mind!

All we have are a few cynical tinkerers, the liberals?! The greens? the NDP, with their legions of so called progressive followers, a total distraction from the essential project...to build a united movement to facilitate a parallel movement.

This is what we must come together. To work out the details.....Iyraste in the rural hinterlands of the BC Interior

..txs. it's not only blocking it's developing new ways of making decisions. it's making all of us players. we want allies not people representing us. as i see it.

..there is plenty of evidence that something is forming but i wouldn't look for it to come in traditional ways. northern spain can show us ways to organize in the communities and about building coops. we have the first peoples to learn from for living in a more participitory way. for me the story isn't how are we going to do it but that we are actually doing it. it's begun. imho.

The theme of the forum is Creative Resistance.

Student and educator activists will connect with community, union, and artist activists to share their commitments, passions, and experiences in a way that will inspire all involved to continue and deepen their work.

We are aiming to build a network connecting students and educators working on social justice and human rights issues with people in the broader community doing the same work.

The event will also feature the Camille Natale Awards. These annual awards recognize outstanding human rights/social justice work done by TDSB students.

Food, Energy, Finance: A Solutions Movement Takes Root In Northern California

Petaluma, Calif.—There’s a new currency here called Bay Bucks that’s helping businesses trade in services and get off the dollar. There’s a new agriculture-tech startup called CropMobster helping redistribute excess produce and cut down on food waste. And a new electricity provider, Sonoma Clean Power, just flipped on the switch May 1 to supply tens of thousands of Sonoma County residents and businesses with renewable energy.

Call it the Solutions Movement. Something is stirring in northern California and it feels a lot like the future – not the Android kind, and definitely not the Wall Street kind, but a more abundant, collective form of wealth that's being generated in a community whose new energy, food and economic systems seem to be falling in sync. The takeaway from last week's Sustainable Enterprise Conference, held in Rohnert Park an hour north of San Francisco, is that the future here looks sustainable because people believe it can and must be so.

As Gil Friend, chief sustainability officer for the City of Palo Alto – which delivers carbon-neutral electricity to all of its commercial and residential customers at a cheaper rate than the utility giant Pacific Gas & Electric – put it: "What we’re here to do is to transform the economy of the planet – and to do it in one generation. Cities have an enormous opportunity to drive this change [through] the policies and initiatives we enact."....

Montreal PSF prep meeting banner

Climate change a central issue at forthcoming Peoples’ Social Forum

An important meeting of environmental activists is to be held in Montréal on June 6 to plan a concerted approach at the August Peoples’ Social Forum (PSF) in Ottawa. The meeting will coincide with the expected approval of the Harper government to the development of the Northern Gateway pipeline, which will convey chemically-treated bitumin (“dilbit”) from the Alberta tar sands to the west coast of British Columbia for subsequent export.

Michel Lambert of the Montréal NGO Alternatives, an initiator of the PSF, described the goals of the Montréal meeting in a recent article in rabble.ca:

“The Conservatives rely so heavily on the increase of tar sands in order to achieve their economic extractivist program that they categorically deny that climate change is a very real problem. Other parties seem relatively cautious in raising the issue and haven't made any attempts at introducing an exit strategy from the fossil fuels, as has been done in many Nordic countries.

“The ball is therefore in our court as a civil society to ensure action. On June 6, this novel process will reunite forces from the East and the West, with Indigenous communities taking part in a massive non-partisan alliance in order to force the Conservative Party to modify its approach, as well as force the other parties to adapt their platform and broach the topic of climate change if they truly wish to replace Harper. The meeting in June will lead to a much larger meeting during the Peoples' Social Forum from August 21 to 24 in Ottawa, during which more than 10,000 people are expected to participate.

“The Assembly on Climate Change will be the first initiative gathering forces from all Canadian territories. Indigenous and environmental groups, citizens' associations, scientists, youth and all those who are active on this issue will be present.”
