I am from Beaches East York and I voted for Prue of course. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED AND DEVISTATED by the results!!! I knew this was going to happen. That anti-union Potts bastard was all over our riding campaigning. How can Toronto reward the liberal party with a MAJORITY! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE. I am going to seriously commit to helping the NDP next time because NOT ONE NDP supporter dropped by my neighbourhood! WE NEED TO DEFEAT POTTS.

youngsocialist

HOWARTH PLEASE STEP DOWN!! You put us in a bad position and now we might lose OUR veteran Prue who has worked tirelessly for us! ARTHUR FUCKING POTTS DOESNT EVEN LIVE HERE!!!

josh

Prue lead down to 2 votes.

It appears like Andrea Horwath has increased both the number of seats and the popular vote for the NDP compared to the last election.

Having said that congratulations to the people who post here who won the election.

And kudos to babble poster Jan Johnstone, and her daughter for having the courage to put their names forward, securing the nominations, and running in this election.

Good on the both of you Jan.

Cheers,

North Report.  Come on down!  I had it wrong.  While my 57 Libs was pretty much on the money, the NDP were stronger than I had given credit for (which I am not unhappy to see as stronger opposition makes for better government) and the PC collapse was far greater than I had imagined.  But let's face it - even iPCos was accurate in comparison to you.

Here's your final call.

PCs - 42 seats

NDP - 34 seats

Libs - 31 seats

I could suggest your taking POL100Y, a trip to an actual campaign, and getting out of your basement and talking to your neighbours BUT....you had the grace to offer congratulations, so:

(1) dont drink the Kool-Aid;

(2) never, EVER, tout IPSOS and that poxy, useless ex-Mulroney staffer Darrell Bricker EVER again; and

(3) try for a bit of analysis: preponderance of data, qualitative judgements, ouija, something, anything other than what you have been doing.

Good luck in life and see you in four years' time

I watched the debate between Potts & Prue and Potts kept up bringing over and over again about the Liberal budget the NDP voted against.

I think the residents wanted to punish the NDP for that, and took it out on Prue.

bekayne

Cheri DiNovo looks safe

josh

Potts now up by 71.  Prue could end up Horwath's #1 victim.

Pierre C yr

Almost under 24% now... it just keeps on dropping... yea Andrea should step aside. How many debacles do we need before we see that the third way doesnt work. Yes we need common sense but we also need principles. Hope Mulcair sees that. Theres a silver lining in that theres never been Liberal in Ottawa to Liberal in Toronto. If this helps keep that opportunistic twit Trudeau out in 2015 Ill be happy.

The final totals will tell how the turnout looked.

It may not be that NDP voters fled to the Liberals. It may be that Prue's GOTV efforts fell flat when voters were unmotivated to come out to the polls. The ONDP campaign was just so uninspiring and did not speak to Torontonians. Maybe the NDP-or-stay-home swing voters stayed home.

josh

Turnout 51.5%. Up from 2011.

WE HAVE TO VOTE FOR HUDAK'S RIGHT-TO-WORK (FOR LESS) FELLOW TRAVELLER TO STOP HUDAK!

THE LIBERALS ARE PROGRESSIVE!

I voted for Prue, but I refused to volunteer for the campaign or even take a sign on account of my disgust with the party's leadership. It was the least motivated vote I've ever cast for the NDP, and I'm a lifelong New Democrat.

Does the Liberal Party Leader sign the nomination papers for these people?

Quote:
It turns out Arthur Potts has a rich history advocating against the interests of workers and has worked on behalf of employers in the private-sector to undermine unions. Under the Harris government Mr. Potts lobbied for anti-worker, anti-family changes to Ontario's workplace laws that put the economic futures of young families at risk. Here's a direct quote where he's complaining about how a law didn't hurt unions effectively, he said: "Unfortunately, the bill has not worked. In the two years since coming into force, no non-construction employers have been able to escape their bargaining relationships with the trades." That's a very telling statement which indicates that Mr. Potts must not have any respect for labour unions or workers in general. Potts also advocates against fair wages for workers (h/t Josh Mandryk). Take a look these two articles (here & here) where Potts calls fair wages "unnecessary red tape".

I think the Tommy Douglas story about the Black and White Cats, meant more before teh Mice started acting like the Black cats.

I'm thrilled tonight that my Riding (Northumberland) is back in the Liberal Column.  Lou Rinaldi was able to recapture it from the conservatives.

The good news tonight for everyone is that Tim Hudak is gone, and his Austerity Politics are defeated.  Wynnes speech was hopeful and positive.  Labour can exhale now.

Jacob Two-Two

Never exhale before the sucker punch. That's what killed Houdini.

Haha, I love you Arthur. You can't change that.

And always remember - a Jew that can't smell an anti-Semite a mile off is in deep shit. DiNovo attacks Canadian sympathizers with the Palestinian cause, while pumping up and praising the Ukrainian followers of Stepan Bandera, the murderer of our people.

Open your eyes, Arthur. Please do. Your family might have just missed that slaughter, not sure, though I know they fought with the Allies against Hitler. My folks hadn't made it out yet.

May DiNovo's name and memory be erased.

One of Cheri di Novo's more laudable positions - coming out against that Israeli Apartheid bullshit.  I am no fan of the West Bank settlements (bulldoze them!) or of the whole Netanyahu-Harper right wing love-in but apartheid? Fuck off!

Re-electing the caucus and increasing the vote was a creditable result, although there are some big lessons to learn from the past two months to be sure.

Neither Brad nor I were on the Ontario election team this time around, "felixr".

That's a joke. Liz Sandal's former hardcore Harris campaigner in 1995 and 1999, will like retain her position as Minister of Education, where she can continue to wreck the public school system, and perhaps they will make "right to work" advocate Arthur Potts Minister of Labour or something.

Syd Ryan should do the decent thing.

When will you ever admit that all that happened under McGuinty was that the Right Liberals amalgamated with the left Tories, who realized they were unelectable when smeared with the Harrisite legacy. That left the PCs with the reformatories, and not much else.

Yeah, that's the part I'm happiest about actually. I was predicting bad things in the turnout. Glad I was wrong. I hope it is a trend. A serious talk about Electoral Reform would help make it one. Doesn't seem on the horizon though.

Comment of the night! Except Potts is a black cat in white cat's clothing (i.e. a hard-right blue con dressed in Liberal red).

Wasn't Rebick a supporter of Elizabeth "Mulroney" May, until the leader said something about abortion? Shouldn't her social-democratic credentials been questioned long ago?

She is into this "social movements" thing. I don't know what it is about really.

Can we say Brian after 3 recent losses, in NS, BC and now Ontario thats theres something that isnt working? While I agree the NDP had to modernize does it make sense to just look like ethical liberals but without the brand?

The kind of people who get all hot under the collar about the inefficiency of taking HST off everyone's hydro bills but support a 30 percent tuition rebate even if your family income is more than double the Ontario average.

So, people who read Toronto Star editorials?

12 polls left, Prune down by 70. There hasn't been an update in a while.

bekayne

3 polls left, Potts by 290

Prue has lost.  He's down by 500 votes with one poll left according to CBC.

It's too bad.  He is a class act.

Having witnessed the ravages of the Harris years, I am relieved to see Hudak fail miserably. Good riddance to this hater of women, workers and the poor.

I knew he was in trouble. I posted about this in another thread. He (Potts) had a very big lead at first. This anti union lobbyist was always showing his face on the streeet.

adma

And another thing: this *may* be the federal Maria Minna-era pattern coming to roost provincially, at last (i.e. how tough and stubborn BEY was to crack until 2011)

takeitslowly

I am glad Michael Prue lost. We need more liberals in the GTA. They have been so wonderful to us peasants.

PrairieDemocrat15

"Progressive" Liberals replce long-time activist politican with mini Huda dressed in red.

After four years of "progressive" Liberal majority government, the NDP will win back all its Toronto ridings and then some.

adma

One good thing about the Oshawa victory: it slams the door in Debater's "NDP can't defeat PCs" face...

PrairieDemocrat15

This election is good news and bad news for the federal NDP. Exciting wins in London, Waterloo, Brampton, Windsor/Essex, Niagara, and Oshawa; but, disheartening losses in TO.

The federal Cons will be a more formidale foe in the southwest and 905 than were Hudak's hapless herd, but I doubt Trudeau will be as big a threat as Wynne in downtown Toronto given he has moved his party in the opposite direction Wynne has.
