Rob Ford "is a social NDPer."

I figured Babblers in particular would enjoy a spirited discussion on Doug Ford's latest pronouncements. After arguing that the provincial Conservative Party needs an "enema" (I admit, I am a bit more sympathetic on this point *grin*) he went on to argue that he and his brother are really social progressives at heart.

" “Rob and I represent the front-line union folks. We’re populists. We’re fiscal conservatives, but social liberals. Rob’s a social NDPer."

I had to clean the coffee off my computer screen after I read that.

Edited further to add--sorry, I didn't see that this was already posted in the thread below. I was cleaning the coffee off my screen. Can someone just remove this thread?

Didn't Doug Ford also say, some months back, that Rob was the "white Obama?" (the implication being that he was socially very progressive -- something I'm not too sure about in Obama's case at this juncture).

I think we can posit that DoFo has a weak relationship with reality.

I wonder if this is a sign of a shift in voter thinking, especially since it seems the right wing no longer has a monopoly on speaking in populist language thanks to the efforts of people like Jack Layton and Andrea Horwath.

Slumberjack

So in essence they all end up sounding the same?

The efforts by Latyon & Horwath to move their parties to the right, you mean?

As for this comment about Ford, I wonder if it's about the Mayoral race?  It could be an attempt to try and get Ford out of 3rd place and at least ahead of Tory by poaching some NDP votes from Chow or some red tory votes from Tory.

mark_alfred

It's an attempt to distance himself from the Hudak Tories, who clearly poisoned even Doug Holyday's run.  Further, it wasn't just the NDP that DoFo associated him with.  It was all three parties.  Ford's a fiscal Conservative.  Ford's a social Liberal.  And Ford's a social NDPer.  Ford's a man whom anyone can project their ideals onto.  No crazy "layoff a 100,000" workers from him.  Just tax cuts, subways, and getting rid of the gravy train.

Maybe that's where the anger from Ford is coming from.

The Fords worked hard last Summer to get Holyday elected in the by-election, only to see him go down less than a year later because of Hudak.  And by a large margin, too.  Because Wynne was doing so well in Toronto, many projections predicted Holyday would lose to Milcyzn, but not by 13 points!  That must have been humiliating for Holyday and the Fords, so you could be right that it is the reason they are lashing out at the Hudak PC's this week and calling for an 'enema' within the party.

Rob Ford is as much a New democrat as you are Debater

Doug

We know what Rob Ford is on, but what is Doug Ford on?

Brachina

I'm not surprised, I've met people who were certain that Rob and Doug Ford were New Democracts I shit you not. Its because Rob Ford and Doug visit low income housing, check on the tentents and what they need and stuff. They've also been known to just give out $20 bucks to people who say they need it and stuff. People still think helping the poor=NDP. Its why its not just Subbanites who vote Ford, but a fair chunk of the Urban poor, people who's never vote for Tim Hudak or Steven Harper. This is something Tim should done instead of the moronic million jobs plan -100,000. It would have stopped the Liberals fear mongering dead in its tracks. s

I distinctly recall a radio interview that Rob Ford gave to an American station, in which he stated that Obama was too left-wing for his tastes, and cited Obamacare as an example of Obama's alleged socialism.

Personally, I think Ford is the kind of guy who has a very ill-formed conception of political ideology, and probably wouldn't see anything screwy about calling himself a "social NDPer", while denouncing a pseudo-state system like Obamacare as socialist. If he were a mere voter, he'd be the kind who rants against welfare, but might occassionally vote NDP because "at least they're for the average guy, not the fat cats".

In my experience, that type of person can actually thrive in municipal politics, where issues don't break down along ideological lines as consistently as they do in provincial and federal politics. I recall a few Edmonton aldermen from my youth who were all over the map in their voting record.

Sineed

Bob and Doug bought their way into office, from showing up at public housing and handing out $20 bills from a big sack like Santa, to the millions (yes, millions) of dollars the Ford family donates to the federal Conservative party. Rather than agonizing over how other candidates may resonate with the Ford nation voters (btw a lot of the remaining citizens of Ford Nation are tweakers, fwiw), we need to scrutinize and mitigate our vulnerability. Not only did we allow these thugs to get into positions of power, but also, we were helpless to do anything about it once their thuggery, incompetence and mendacity was obvious and irrefutable.

Just like people overwhelmingly voted Liberal out of a fear of Tim Hudak, the October election will show people voting not out of a desire to build a better Toronto, but out of a fear of allowing this strip mall goon from Etobicoke continue to have a public stage upon which to humiliate Toronto before the eyes of the world. At least, unlike provincially, we've got a credible choice. But the politics of fear is no way to build a better society.

If Rob Ford is a Social NDPer, I look forward to seeing him march at World Pride wearing as many rainbow things as possible. He can take fashion tips from Olivia.

(Conveniently he comes home from rehab on June 30, missing the entirety of World Pride.)

I was wondering about the Subbanites! He's a big man around here, although he is a Torontonian.

I was hoping the attack on New York would have gone better, then they could have gone for LA before Berlin.

Ford is probably coming home on June 30 so that he can upstage the by-elections happening that day.

Brachina

No, Ford's going back sooner so he can campaign for Joe Cressly to show how much of a dipper he really is ;p
