The Nonsense of Women Only Threads

I was tempted at first to just go ahead and post on the Women Only thread abot Feminism and Libertarianism, you see I consider mysef a civil libertarian and I don't particularly like being told what to do, it comes with the turf. I particularly hate the arrogant tone when lefties are the ones doing the limiting of debate, silencing of voices or censorship.

I'm a man so my goodness how can I know the struggle of women?  When I was raised by a woman, one who could be tough as nails. She was  union organizer, and worked in factory, she was 1970s feminist of the Norma Rae variety meaning that she actually did the heavy lifting while the folks at University on their parents dime talked the talk.   She would have never identified as a feminist but she exemplified what a strong independent woman could be like.

I'm also a father of three daughters.  Independent thinkers all.  I don't think they would like be pegged into a category or being told who they could or could not talk with.  Libertarian isn't a dirty word to any of them.   They know as I do that being a libertarian does not mean that one must subscribe to free market capitalism.

The funny thing about feminists since the 1980s is that they have often found themselves on the same team as evangelical Christians, as they take up their moral crusades. In the 1980s and 90s they joined the bible banging crowd in campaigns for decency.  They have also at times been champions of law and orders measures and most recently groups like E. Fry have come out against the Supreme court Siding with Conservatives on the morality of Prostitution.

Common sense tells me that if I showed up to a rally for any cause, you name it, and the meeting looked a gathering of Campaign Life, I would likely realize that I may on the wrong side of the issue.

If anyone over in the women only thread wants to meet a real feminist I will introduce you to my mom, she's almost 81 now, but as fiesty as when she was in her 30s.  Be warned however she had two sons as well as a daughter, and she likely would see through your mumbo jumbo, she heard her share of doublespeak from the bosses in her day, and she is apt to tell you straight up!

Cheers

Pondering

Don't civil libertarians respect the right of free association?  What about the right to private space? Were your daughters allowed to speak alone or did you always have to be in on the conversation?

Your response proves the need for women only spaces. You feel so entitled that you are outraged a woman wants to speak with other women in one thread, in a feminist forum. How dare we exclude men from a conversation about feminism! Censorship!

We have all met real feminists, each other. Apparently your Mom didn't tell you everything straight up or you wouldn't feel so entitled as to take a temper tantrum in a feminist forum because some women didn't include you in one conversation.

This thread should be moved to Rabble Reactions.

Too funny so now I am told which forum I should be filed to. Will the Polit Bureau ask for me input before the big move or do they just follow the lead of the random self appointed moderator! You fols are too much! Read back your statements it is which the mainstream can't bear the politically correct left. Keep talking you marginalize yourself with every statement.

To answer the poster about whether my daughter's could have private thoughts and space, of course they can, but private space doesn't typically occur on public forums. Also my daughter's know that sitting in a room signing to your own choir doesn't make change, vigorous and respectful debate in the public forum with people from different points of view wins over hearts and minds.

Well, apparently while you don't like to be told what you can and can't do, you're perfectly comfortable in pronouncing what others should and shouldn't do. Your grossly hypocritical stance is duly noted. However, this isn't a libertarian free-for-all and you've violated the mandate of this space with relish. For that, you are so fucking out of here.

You might have a point if there wasn't also vigorous debate (not to get into the issue that a lot of it fails to be respectful).

Never mind that you have women in your life so you presumably understand. This kind of begs the question of whether you understand a more basic principle here; have you never had a discussion that you wanted to be private? Have you never been in a forum where some people speak over, shout down, and belittle, and demonstrate by their actions that they don't get the process, because they make it all about them and the fact they can't take part?

And there are plenty of internet spaces that are members only, or where only certain people are asked to take part. Do we need to call the internet cops on them?

One wonders why we don't see libertarians barging down the doors of closed Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, because presumably we as a society can't do anything to fight that problem unless the doors to these private spaces are smashed.

No campaigns to throw open the doors to even more important closed meetings of government and business, even though they have far more influence, much of it damaging, on our society.

Funny that it seems to be the rare instances where those who are male, or white, as asked repectfully to hold their peace that it is somehow a great threat that we can't stand for.

Pretty rich getting a lecture about civil liberties from a right winger.

What's the point of this thread?

And who cares if a thread is for women - ESPECIALLY if it has to do with feminism.

Women's issues..I have no dog in that fight,I doubt you do either.

So stop whining.
