I doubt the spam in deliberate site sabotage. I think it's probably an outfit that gets paid for sending out a certain volume of specific spam, repeatedly posting the same messages over and over again is probably an attempt to meet some quotia in order to get paid.
Is there any way we can set up a spam filter similar to what online e-mail services use, that would divert the spam into an invisible folder so it's not clogging up the active topics page?

Yes. Stop new registrations. And require email confirmation when we restart. We've been saying that for, like, months or maybe years. It would be nice if someone just told us whether this had been tried and was failing.
