Aren't police exempted from the Highway safety code? Such as they don't have to wear seatbelts.

I fully support exempting police from seatbelt legislation. Surely we can trust them to size up the situation and act accordingly.
The notion that cops, or any vehicle, without flashing lights or sirens, should be allowed to endanger others by violating traffic rules, is of course abhorrent and unlawful. Confronting the cops directly, however, as this good citizen did, is stupid and potentially suicidal. He should be thankful he got away with a ticket.

A friend of mine did something similar decades ago and all he got was an invitation to step into the alley with the cops. Fortunately it was a very public place and he was able to decline.
Though I am sure if they had wanted to do more than just point out that they had the power to beat the shit out of him with impunity, they could have easily done it.

I see the bicycle cops cruising through red lights all the time. Although I make a point of stopping, I did resist the temptation to tut-tut them.

This guy should have known better.
You can't confront a policeman under any circumstances.
You're just looking for trouble.
They are full-patch professionals...Above the law.
Until the police are held accountable by a committee of citizens rather than their peers,it's best to avoid them at all costs.

Aren't police exempted from the Highway safety code? Such as they don't have to wear seatbelts.
My understanding is that police, firefighters, paramedics and cab drivers are exempt on the conditions of their license, as long as they're driving a vehicle for work and not their own personal vehicles.
It's not the hypocircy of police officers comitting traffic violations that gets me. It's that in that line of work, they are exposed to the negative consequences of not following safe driving practices, and as such one would expect them of all people to know better.
