Pondering

Some rabble participants seem to think it is their duty to police babble. They see nothing wrong in derailing thread after thread turning it into personal attacks against  posters whose views they disagree with.

The harassment is a means of silencing others.

Sometimes it's direct, other times it is mocking, but it is always disrespectful, hostile and intended to insult.

Bullying is the most accurate way to describe it. You could say this happens on all boards so it's normal, natural, inevitable, but it isn't so. Particularly on a board that prides itself on being progressive people ought to be able to hold themselves to a higher standard of behavior. The disrespectful behavior is self-indulgent, childish and destructive.

It is not only disrespectful of the person under attack it is also disrespectful towards the mods and everyone who would really like to have political discussions that stay on topic

The board cannot achieve greater diversity when there are a few members who want to keep it an exclusive little club for posters who meet with their approval.

This is from the Justin Trudeau campaign 2015 topic. :

So the issue at hand is a major international conflict where many lives hang in the balance, and your primary concern is Trudeau scoring political points at the expense of the other 2 party leaders?

I hope it will be a long time before I have another example but it is a faint hope.

Do we get a line and sinker too?

Not baiting at all. I very much hope this will be the end of it. Anyone attacks me personally, or anyone else for that matter, I will bring it here. Objecting to bullying is not baiting.

That's not a personal attack. You calling Jacob a "jerk"-now that's a personal attack.

No kidding.

How about a can of gasoline  and a match while we are at it?

I do not see anything productive in this, especially since it is a VERY inflamatory matter that seemed to be settling - not without some hard work and teeth-gritting on some peoples' part, and this has basically been posted out of nowhere, for no reason I can see other than to pick at a scab.

I've already flagged the OP for the mods' attention. Please don't engage this topic. I implore you.

6079_Smith_W

Yeah. Other than registering my feeling that this is really uncalled for, I am signing out.

Much as I am loathe to take your advice on anything I admit that is good advice and I won't post on this matter again.

Accusing me of caring more about making political points than the lives of people who are dying in the Mid-East is most definitely a personal attack.

There was absolutely no reason or excuse for it.

Pondering, if you have a specific problem with another babblers post, there are ways of contacting the mods about it.  The type of thread you have started here feels pretty much like the thread I closed down last Wednesday for reasons stated at the time. It is provocative and will go nowhere but bad places. I'm closing it.  Please do not start another in a similar vein.
