Federal NDP Candidates 2015

Linda McQuaig virtually tied Chrystia Freeland in the part of Toronto Centre that will be the riding of Toronto Centre post-redistribution. She proved to be a very effective candidate and built up lots of name recognition - i think she is the strongest possible candidate in 2015 in Toronto Centre - especially since the Liberals are running a rightwing business tycoon from the CD Howe Institute.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer Hollett runs in University-Rosedale nnext year...but nothing will be decided or announced until after the municipal elections.

On the Pierre Ducasse news, - surprising and a bit disappointing. Pierre is a smart, hard-working and dedicated guy, - who after multiple electoral misadventures both in the North and here in Hull-Aylmer had the bad luck and poor timing to sit out the 2011 Orange Wave.

His decision to run in Manicouagan is a little rough for the incumbent, - but what to do? If nothing else, it tells me that our local MP (Nicole Turmel) must be re-offering in 2015, tho' I have not seen anything formal yet to that effect.

Although I'm on record as [url=http://rabble.ca/babble/ontario/andrea-horwaths-fate-on-friday-13th]unim... with the Ontario provincial NDP's recent performance, the fact remains that the NDP won 21 seats including in a number of ridings NOT currently held by the federal party (e.g. Essex, London West, Niagara Falls, Kitchener-Waterloo, Bramalea Gore Malton Springdale, Oshawa). Any word on possible federal NDP candidates in those areas (acknowledging also that boundaries may now be different due to redistribution)?

 I too agree with Stock, the riding boundaries last time were not favourible to the NDP, and yet Linda manage to put the scare into Freeland.

There had been a lot of speculation that Genest-Joudain was not planning to run again...but it sounds like he wants to after all. He was quoted as saying that he welcomes competition and that it shows the strength of the NDP in Quebec that people are fighting vigorously for NDP nominations. He didn't seem at all bitter about being challenged - but who knows what the inside story is.

I'm not questioning you, I'm just curious.

You have to give Alain Giguere credit. He is not the most exciting of politicians (what do you expect of a tax lawyer?!) but boy, he has been in it for the long haul. I remember him running as a 'lost-cause' NDP candidate in the 1980s and '90s ... he was certainly no candidate of convenience or come-lately to the party.

Hope he has made the right choice in his riding: the 2011 riding bridged two sides of the Mille-Isles River (Laval and North Shore) and he has gone with the latter option, - even though his personal residence (at least up until a couple of years ago) was on the island of Laval. 

For Babblers who do not recognise the Marc Aurele Fortin name, - he was a well-known landscape painter from the village of Ste Rose de Laval (where I grew up many, many years ago).  Here's one of the local church that dominated the village (in every sense):

No word yet on candidates, but I see the federal NDP is hiring a [url=http://www.ndp.ca/job/national-organizer-southwest-ontario]National Organizer for Southwest Ontario[/url], a region where the Ontario NDP made most of its recent gains. I hope they get some good applicants!

Hey benhart, have you heard any news on possible candidates in any of the Brampton ridings?

For everyone else, how reliable is Ian Capstick? If so, could this be true?

Ian Capstick, a former New Democrat political operative who worked on the party’s 2004, 2006 and 2008 federal election campaigns, said the NDP hasn’t nominated as many candidates as he would have expected by this point.

But he said he thinks the NDP could be planning to nominate a large number of candidates in a short period of time, as part of a “shock and awe” approach to garner some publicity in ridings it thinks are winnable.

It is a year before the scheduled date foir the 2015 federal election.  No party is "having trouble" finding candidates at this stage of th game.  There are candidates who (I hope) are willing to start canvassing very early and can benefit from being nominated early.  This is good for those candidates, but hardly a sign of any party having difficulties to not have a full slate of candidates this far out from an election date.
