Any word on whether or not Linda McQuaig will run again in reconfigured Toronto-Centre?

ctrl190 riding of Toronto Centre has been left open for Linda McQuaig if she want's to run again, Because Jennifer Hollett has already announced that she plans to seek the ndp nomination in Spadina–Fort York

I'd much rather have Hollett run in Toronto Centre than Linda McQuaig. I like Linda, but she's already lost it once and probably will again. Are there any other names being tossed around for the downtown Toronto ridings?

Stockholm

Linda McQuaig virtually tied Chrystia Freeland in the part of Toronto Centre that will be the riding of Toronto Centre post-redistribution. She proved to be a very effective candidate and built up lots of name recognition - i think she is the strongest possible candidate in 2015 in Toronto Centre - especially since the Liberals are running a rightwing business tycoon from the CD Howe Institute.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer Hollett runs in University-Rosedale nnext year...but nothing will be decided or announced until after the municipal elections.

nicky

I'm a resident of Toronto Centre and echo what Stockholm says about Linda. She was a very strong and well-regarded candidate who was well received and built up much goodwill. She increased the party vote by about 7% and would have come close to winning on the new boundaries.

I think she is the strongest candidate we could possibly run in TC and I hope she takes the plunge again.

On the Pierre Ducasse news, - surprising and a bit disappointing. Pierre is a smart, hard-working and dedicated guy, - who after multiple electoral misadventures both in the North and here in Hull-Aylmer had the bad luck and poor timing to sit out the 2011 Orange Wave.

His decision to run in Manicouagan is a little rough for the incumbent, - but what to do? If nothing else, it tells me that our local MP (Nicole Turmel) must be re-offering in 2015, tho' I have not seen anything formal yet to that effect.

What to do? The inner circles of the NDP (and all respect, but Ducasse is certainly that) could promote aboriginal participation, and at least avoid trying to defeat incumbent MPs from First Nations communities. What's next, a challenge to Romeo Saganash?

Although I'm on record as unim... with the Ontario provincial NDP's recent performance, the fact remains that the NDP won 21 seats including in a number of ridings NOT currently held by the federal party (e.g. Essex, London West, Niagara Falls, Kitchener-Waterloo, Bramalea Gore Malton Springdale, Oshawa). Any word on possible federal NDP candidates in those areas (acknowledging also that boundaries may now be different due to redistribution)?

robbie_dee

On the Manicougan story I am surprised - I thought Pierre Ducasse would be still be busy There's got to be a lot of work to get done if they want to be ready to run candidates in 2018. Has there been any comment by Genest-Jourdain?

Did you give that advice to Jack Layton?  Wink

Point taken Hunky_Monkey!  I just wish the NDP would up its game more re: candidates.  It seems to be more about old party loyalities than about who can really win.  Trinity Spadina is an example.

Brachina

I too agree with Stock, the riding boundaries last time were not favourible to the NDP, and yet Linda manage to put the scare into Freeland.

What does that have to do with Linda McQuaig?? She had never run for public office before though she had been wooed - no one would ever have described her as being part of any "NDP inner circle" - on the contrary she was and is a high profile journalist and author with no particular partisan ties before being approached and she was was a hit on the doorstep and she took the NDP vote in Toronto Centre to an all-time high - what more can ou ask for? she is EXACTLY the kind of candidate the NDP needs more of.

There had been a lot of speculation that Genest-Joudain was not planning to run again...but it sounds like he wants to after all. He was quoted as saying that he welcomes competition and that it shows the strength of the NDP in Quebec that people are fighting vigorously for NDP nominations. He didn't seem at all bitter about being challenged - but who knows what the inside story is.

FWIW, I see that the Liberal Party has a handy-dandy page on its website where you can track all their nominated candidates by province and riding.

http://www.liberal.ca/teamtrudeau/

You would have thought that a bit of a no-brainer for each political party, but I haven't seen anything similar on the NDP website yet.

Any word on who the NDP candidate is for Yorkton? It looks like a safe Conservative seat, but before being represented for a long time by Garry Breitkreuz of the Reform/Conservatives, it was represented by Lorne Nystrom of the NDP. Maybe more of an incumbent seat than one for a particular party. With Breitkreuz not offering again, it would be wise to put up a strong contender.

Alain Giguère MP for Marc-Aurèle-Fortin will run for the nomination in Thérèse-De Blainville and not in Marc-Aurèle-Fortin. His riding was spilt in half creating the new riding of Thérèse-De Blainville and the rest remaining as the new riding of Mac-Aurèle-Fortin which is now on the island of Laval completely and not on the North Shore. You have to give Alain Giguere credit. He is not the most exciting of politicians (what do you expect of a tax lawyer?!) but boy, he has been in it for the long haul. I remember him running as a 'lost-cause' NDP candidate in the 1980s and '90s ... he was certainly no candidate of convenience or come-lately to the party.

Hope he has made the right choice in his riding: the 2011 riding bridged two sides of the Mille-Isles River (Laval and North Shore) and he has gone with the latter option, - even though his personal residence (at least up until a couple of years ago) was on the island of Laval.

For Babblers who do not recognise the Marc Aurele Fortin name, - he was a well-known landscape painter from the village of Ste Rose de Laval (where I grew up many, many years ago).  Here's one of the local church that dominated the village (in every sense):

Hey benhart, have you heard any news on possible candidates in any of the Brampton ridings?

For everyone else, how reliable is Ian Capstick? If so, could this be true?

Ian Capstick, a former New Democrat political operative who worked on the party’s 2004, 2006 and 2008 federal election campaigns, said the NDP hasn’t nominated as many candidates as he would have expected by this point.

But he said he thinks the NDP could be planning to nominate a large number of candidates in a short period of time, as part of a “shock and awe” approach to garner some publicity in ridings it thinks are winnable.

Reasonable enough if the PM keeps to the fixed date law but if calls a snap election the benefit would be gone and instead put the party behind. If they do this in the fall or winter that is one thing but by Spring it would be a bad strategy as there is a chance of an election then.

Given the money the Conservatives have -- it may be a fair bet they will want a few months spending that before calling a snap election so I don't take very seriously the threat of a call before Spring.

Earliest I would expect would be budget followed by intense advertising for a month or to -- and polls willing -- a call then. So if Budget is in February, expect a March barrage of ads and a call in April for May. May is good for the Conservatives in some ridings as the university students are gone. May 18 or May 25 look interesting depending on what else is going on.

I was looking at the NDP's candidates for Manitoba on Wikipedia and only Daniel Blaikie (who I hope has a good chance at winning Elmwood-Transcona back) does anyone know if the NDP is having trouble finding candidates to run for them?

and benhart, without giving out your sources, do you know if anyone has plans to run next year for the NDP in Manitoba?

scott16 wrote:

It is a year before the scheduled date foir the 2015 federal election.  No party is "having trouble" finding candidates at this stage of th game.  There are candidates who (I hope) are willing to start canvassing very early and can benefit from being nominated early.  This is good for those candidates, but hardly a sign of any party having difficulties to not have a full slate of candidates this far out from an election date.

Horse first, cart next.

scott16 from first look it would seem like the NDP is having trouble Finding candidate but that's not the case at all. After changing riding boundaries and a much larger NDP caucus than pre 2011 the process this time had to be done differently. So the current focus is to ask NDP MP's are they running again and if so get them nominated now. With all incumbent MP's who will reoffer being nominated before christmas. Also if you haven't noticed that in riding's where there are NDP MP's but they don't intend to reoffer nomination's have been open and candidate names are everywhere. In the non-incumbent ridings where nomination's have been held there riding association had already been setup and there candidate's were apporved by NDP HQ ie(Thomas Mulcair & Anne McGrath) faster. There are alot of NDP nominations that are set to take place in the next few month's, with an overall goal to have all 338 candidate's in by Spring of 2015. I can assure you the NDP is having no troble finding candidate's and you might just be surprised at some of the names that come forward for the NDP in the next few month's.Cool

MP Jean-Francois Larose has left the NDP caucus to Join a New Political Party being started by MP Jean-Francois Fortin who recently left the Bloc Quebecios to create his own party called Forces et Démocratie. So now the NDP nomination contest in Repentigny is between Réjean Bellemare and Mathieu V. Otis.

The basic requirements for admission to the new party being:

1. That your name has to be "Jean-Francois"; and

2. You have delusions of re-election.

Or maybe they have ambitions involving principle rather than just personal privilege and power?

Quote:

House of Commons Oral Questions

Mr. Jean-François Fortin:

Mr. Speaker, I ask for unanimous consent for the following:

That this House condemn the Prime Minister’s tactic of equating any legitimate criticism of the State of Israel with anti-Semitism and deplore his refusal to condemn the establishment of new Israeli settlements in occupied territory in violation of UN resolutions; that this House urge the government to return to a just, fair and balanced position that is respectful of international law and human rights; that this House reaffirm the fundamental importance of a total and permanent end to confrontations that prevent dialogue between the two parties and that it condemn any act of violence toward Israelis and Palestinians; and finally that this House reaffirm its support for a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that is based both on Israelis’ right to live in peace within their secure and recognized borders and on Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

The Speaker:

The hon. member had a very lengthy motion. There does not seem to be consent for him to be able to move it.

And here is .

Well so far, they're head and shoulders above the Bloc and the NDP, respectively. Looking forward to their contribution in the movements for justice and democracy.
