London municipal election Oct 27

Starting this thread because:

- It's municipal election time

- I and a few other babblers live in Southwestern Ontario

With Joe Fontana in disgrace, who London's next mayor will be is anyone's guess. Expect an appearance by Tommy Paine who will provide updates for babble on Monday night (I'll be in the hospital recovering from knee surgery).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery

In the early going, incumbant councellors seem to be behind.  Long time right wingers like Bud Pollhill and Paul Van Meerbergen seem to be looking at defeat, with Steven Orser also behind.

Matt Brown for mayor seems to be headed for victory, with 54 % of votes counted, to Paul Cheng's 35%

Brown has been declared winner for mayor.

Jesse Hellmer has defeated incumbent Steven Orser in Ward 4.

Facing racist attacks earlier in the week, Mohammed Salih has won in open Ward 4.

Long time councellor Harold Usher, the only person of colour for several elections, has gone down to defeat.

There's no left right pattern here.  People are just turfing incumbents.

I may have been premature on Harold Usher, it seems the race there is too close to call, Usher has not, at this time, been defeated.

Being part of the "Fontana 8" -- those who supported Joe Fontana, who resigned as Mayor after being convicted of fraud, suffered at the polls.

And Harold Usher hung on to win last night.

So do labour/NDP candidates now control London's council and the mayorality?

There were some major upsets. Both Matt Brown for Mayor and Jesse Helmer for Ward 4 were endorsed by the London District Labour Council, but both candidates follow a Liberal party platform (and are rumoured to be funded by them). Stephen Orser took over a traditionally Liberal ward so it's back to the status quo. Matt Brown was outside Fontana's circle and, as such, was a favourite.
