Canada has ties to one of poorest countries in Africa, by providing development aid, business dealings in mining and diplomatic relations. I think its one of a handful of countries in the continent where we have biliteral ties.
It wasnt really what you'd call a democracy even before the coup because it did have multiparty elections and parties that helped stablize a dictatorship. Now, the leaders of the coup say they will cede power to civilian rule.
But how did this happen?
One explanation is that the leaders were trained by the US (much like Latin American dictators) and the counterterrorism efforts in Mali.
