PHP did not overwhelmingly for Olivia; PHP by a narrow margin voted for John Tory.  Olivia won the "Parkdale ward" (Ward 14) by a 13% margin over John Tory, but she came second to John Tory in the "High Park ward" (Ward 13) by a 23% margin.

Claire Card has won the NDP nomination in the riding of Saskatoon—University for the 2015 General Election

Linda Duncan has won the NDP nomination in the riding of Edmonton Strathcona for the 2015 General Election

Robert Chisholm will be seeking the nomination again for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour this Monday evening at the Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth.

I see that Claire Card is a veterinarian - she should rake in the animal vote!! (and maybe a lot of people with pets too)

I was thinking about Mulcair being a provincial liberal. Does anyone know of other provincial libs that might want to run for the NDP federally?

Regarding Mulcair / Howard Hampton announcement, I wonder if Tom has also managed to recruit Howie to run against Greg Rickford in Kenora?

So far it appears he's just been hired on as a [url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/howard-hampton-to-advise-federal-ndp-on-... advisor to the Party regarding the "Ring of Fire" development project[/url]. However I wouldn't be shocked to see him run. His old base in Rainy River is located in John Rafferty's riding now, but he could run against Rickford in Kenora or conceivably against Bruce Hyer in Thunder Bay-Superior North.

I don't think Howard Hampton is interested in running for office again, but you never know.

Remember that the Liberals will also be running stronger campaigns in those ridings than they did under Ignatieff, and they used to be Liberal ridings until a few elections ago.

It will be interesting to see whether Bruce Hyer really does carry through on running as a Green MP.  He hasn't been nominated yet, according to Pundit's Guide.  I also found it interesting that he voted with Harper on the Iraq War last month, and against his own leader, Liz May.

The NDP stilll does not have a candidate in Winnipeg North; I am of the opinon no one wants to run against Lamoureux due to the fact that they feel the current riding boundaries are not favorable to any NDP candidate running in that riding. I am of the opinion that the right candidate would clobber him; he is fluff and bluster, and toatlly brainless. He's the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz come to life. But I'm not holding my breath on his not being re-elected.

Meanwhile NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan has been voted the BEST Toronto MP by the readers of Now Magazine.

Rathika says she is honored to receive the award because it comes from 'the people'.

Peggy Nash came in second.

The latest numbers from Pundits' Guide where they track this sort of stuff has the Conservatives with 170 nominated candidates (out of 338 ridings), the  Liberals with 133, NDP with 50 and Greens with 4.

The Conservatives have gotten off to a strong start, as usual.  They sure keep that machine going strong, whatever else may be said about them.

You can see at Pundit's Guide that the Conservatives have concentrated a lot of their efforts on Ontario - they've already nominated the majority of their candidates in the province.  They know that a large part of the next election will be determined in the Ontario suburbs.

Surprised that the NDP has only nominated 50 candidates.  I know that Ian Capstick says the NDP will nominate a large batch by the end of the year, but it still looks like the NDP is behind compared to the Conservatives & Liberals.

So, here's what a few of the contests above will look like now that we know who's running for Liberals & NDP:

Honoré-Mercier -> former Liberal MP Pablo Rodriguez vs. NDP MP Paulina Ayala

St. John's South-Mount Pearl -> Seamus O'Regan vs. NDP MP Ryan Cleary

Dartmouth-Cole Harbour -> Deputy Mayor Darren Fisher vs. NDP MP Robert Chisholm

I read over on the Winnipeg Free Press during the muncipal elections that:
Suzanne Hyrnk (NDP): The Winnipeg School Division trustee will seek the NDP nomination in Winnipeg North
Not sure if that has been confirmed at all though

Shouldn't this MP be suspended by Mulcair pending the resolution of the lawsuit?

That leaves the new riding of La Prairie open for a new candidate, since Hoang Mai is seeking the nomination in Brossard—Saint-Lambert, and Sadia Groguhé in Longueuil — Charles-LeMoyne. But I see no news on La Prairie, not even a Facebook page?

If Hoang Mai runs in Brossard-Saint Lambert, then I guess we'll be seeing a contest between him and former Liberal MP Alexandra Mendes.  She has been nominated as the Liberal in that riding.

There's no NDP candidate in La Prairie yet, no.  (Although the Liberal candidate has been nominated).

http://www.punditsguide.ca/riding/?riding=1902

I'm assuming the NDP won't have trouble finding a candidate.  The results from last time give the NDP a good edge in the newly-distributed riding, so I'm sure they just haven't gotten to this one yet.

The Liberals will be more competitive than they were in 2011, but obviously whoever runs for the NDP will have a good shot too, so an NDP candidate should emerge by the end of 2014, I would think.

Leaving open the "new" seat in Laval of Marc-Aurèle-Fortin, which was the name of Giguère's previous seat (although the Commission wanted to rename it Sainte-Rose). Transposed vote: NDP 49.0%, Bloc 24.3%, Liberal 13.8%, Conservative 10.4%, Green 2.3%. No nomination contestants yet? A seat for a new star?

A contested nomination, the first for quite a while.

Any news on how the new ridings associations are going to be broken up in downtown Toronto, and how candidates will be selected, given that the ridings are going to be re-divided?

sherpa-finn

In terms of procedure, all party riding associations are being re-constituted in accordance with the new electoral map. And all candidate nominating processes are following that new map.

What that means "politically", is a whole different kettle of fish as incumbents and challengers (for nominations, executive posts, etc) jockey for position either openly or behind closed doors ....

The by-elections yesterday were according to the old map, so that must have added a layer of complexity. But it hasn't meant much locally in my riding, where the change in boundaries is relatively modest - and the organizational infrastructure relatively "light".
