Glenn writes "The issues the Premier is championing – retirement security, investment in the Ring of Fire, better health care – are the same issues I care deeply about and areas where the people of Sudbury rightly expect to see real progress."

I call bull-spit;
- the OLP has a terrible record of scandal, waste and mismanagement and botched Provatization in healthcare, look at Ornge, excessive overpriced LHINs and eHealth in particular. In most cases Ontario ranks last and is falling farther behind
- There has been little to no action over the past seven years by the OLP around the Ring of Fire, botching every attempt at it and excluding First Nations
- I wouldn't trust this OLP with a retirement plan seeing how they have zero crediblitly on the fiscal management side of things, they are also the only party along with the PCs to have voted against the plan

This strikes of opportunism and bribery at worst... this is bitterness and a personal issue with the NDP or Mulcair.

Meanwhile Christina Blizzard says this is Andrea's fault

One thing this demonstrates is the shocking inability of New Democrats to hang on to their MPs and MPPs.

Cimino quit Nov. 20, with just 12 days left in the Legislative calendar before the House rose for the Christmas break. No matter what overwhelming personal issues he was dealing with, it surely shouldn’t have been too much for NDP Leader Andrea Horwath to convince him to hang in for those few days.

Let him take time those days off, if necessary, to deal with the issues.

In a majority parliament, it wouldn’t have made much difference.

As it is, the NDP will be hard pressed to hang on to the seat, although voters will view Thibeault’s defection with great skepticism.

USW will work 24/7 to get NDP elected in Sudbury

So another NDP MP leaves the Mulcair caucus.

At what point do NDPers have to agree that this reflects on Mulcair's leadership?

It is obvious why Glen Thibeault has defected to the Ont Libs. He wants a cabinet post and actually institute policy in government. Rather than bang your head against the wall in opposition.

If he gets defeated provincially, will he run for the Libs federally?

If helping implement reactionary policies is your cup of tea, I guess that is possible.

I think a lot of factors may be involved, Mulcair raising the long gun registry issue, apparently out of the blue, the Cimino nomination, and the sidelining of Lowenberg, Andrea's less than stellar performance.

Careerism is hard to avoid.

So Chantal Hébert was right to say last week that Mulcair's gun registry comments have caused division among the rural/Northern MP's in the NDP.

And this also backs up what I was trying to point out on the polling thread yesterday - the Mulcair NDP (which is now down to 20%) is droppiing in support and people (including Glenn Thibeault) are realizing that the NDP's chances in 2015 aren't looking too good.

While the Liberals are mired in scandalous behaviour in Sudbury, bribing one candidate who won't take it and plundering another who's opportunism is now plain to see... the NDP has 5 potential candidates stepping up to run for the ONDP

http://www.thesudburystar.com/2014/12/19/ndp-race-for-sudbury-nomination...

"Suzanne Shawbonquit has extensive business experience and has worked in the television and film industry and served for six years as chair of the Trillium Foundation Grant Review Team... Also running are Jesse Gaudet, who ran in Ward 3 inn October's municipal election, former Sudbury NDP candidates Paul Loewenberg and Dave Battaino, and former mayoral and councillor candidate John Caruso."

Any insight on these candidates?

Stockholm

I certainly like the optics of the NDP running a young First Nations woman with all kinds of accomplishments - against a monstrous pig at the trough like Glenn Thibeault!!

Do seriously contested nomination campaigns, help or hinder the actual election campaign, or do they have no effect?

The American primaries are basically part of the election campaign.

When McGuinty basically induced Whitmer, the long time PC MPP to step down (and gave her a sweet deal as head of workman's compensation) and thus create a byelection in Waterloo, ON, the voters paid the liberals the respect by instead electing Catherine Fife, NDP. It had been a long term PC seat, and the Liberals figured they could win it, and create a majority for them.

It was the same strategy they are basically using in Sudbury. So Wynne for all her pretending to be a new and not Dalton McGuinty redux, is playing the same kind of politics. Meet the new boss, the same as the old boss.

It was more a longtime Witmer seat than a PC seat.  Waterloo had been held federally by the NDP at one time under Max Saltsman.

Stockholm

Oh come on Max Salsman last won an election in Waterloo-Cambridge in 1974 - 40 years ago and back then much of what is now Waterloo was farmer's fields. The NDP stronghold back then was in Cambridge itself, Waterloo was their weaker area.

But its true that McGuinty BRIBED Witmer with a taxpayer funded job in a desperate attempt to get a majority through the backdoor - it was a total fiasco.

You've always had such a way with words, Stockholm. Wink

Just keep in mind that the "monstrous pig at the trough" was an NDPer until a few days ago.

But even then, K-W as it now stands can scarcely be dubbed "natural" PC; indeed, federally speaking, it has a *weaker* recent Con history than Cambridge (albeit on behalf of the Libs, not the NDP)

But the Libs were the farmers putting out the trough. (in the real world it's called bribery.)

What does it say about the Federal NDP caucus that so many of its members have wanted to cross the floor to other parties since 2011?

I keep coming back to this point, but no one here seems to have an answer.

On CTV Question Period yesterday, Gloria Galloway, Tonda McCharles, Craig Oliver, etc. said it may be because of Mulcair's leadership style and the condescending way he treats people.
