No NDPP, That was a 50th anniversary memorial event organized by a private group. It was a burial. It is pretty common to see priests there.

Got any pictures of Ukrainian clerics blessing guns and weapons? Has Petro Poroshenko made any pronouncements about alignment with the church? Does he have a Christian Orthodox biker gang ?  ... or has he said anything like this?:

Quote:

“Many Euro-Atlantic countries have moved away from their roots, including Christian values. Policies are being pursued that place on the same level a multi-child family and a same-sex partnership, a faith in God and a belief in Satan. This is the path to degradation.”

Though the situation is a bit different. The Ukrainian government hasn't had to use the Ukrainian Orthodox church as a front organization in prisoner swap negotiations because it isn't denying that it is fighting a war.

And the fact is, Purin hasn't so much propped up the church as taken it over, elements of tolerance, or which don't align with his policy are being driven out, like every other media or organization he has taken over.

Personally, I don't have much truck with any of this Abrahamic god gobbledygook, but I do see that your Galician Nazi ultranationalist types want to force the churches to sieg heil and slava ukrayni! along with everybody else. In other words, you agree that Ukraine isn't using the church as a tool of state power, as Putin is.

(seems to be the gist of your post)

NDPP

In countries of 'believers' the church is ALWAYS a tool of state power...

swallow swallow's picture

That's an absurd statement. The Catholic church was a tool of state power in communist Poland? In East Timor under Indonesian military occupation? No.

6079_Smith_W

Indeed. Tell that to Oscar Romero.

swallow swallow's picture

You could make a good case that the Catholic chruch in El Salvador was an instrument of state power until Romero decided to speak out against repression. And perhaps his change of sides outraged the powerful even more as a result. I picked out two cases where it appears the entire local church was oppositional. I suppose we could add, for instance, numerous countries where the major opposiiton is based within Islamic movements. Anyway, I'd say religion sometimes ser ves the state, sometimes mobilizes opposition.

6079_Smith_W

He was in fact a fairly conservative cleric, as you say.

I'd say it is both at the same time. There are some who fall into line, and some who do not. That is happening in Russia, just as it has in other cases where government decided to use the church as a tool of power.

What Putin is Not Telling US -  by Pepe Escobar

"Even facing what, under any circumstances is a perfect storm; President Putin delivered an extremely measured performance at his annual press conference and Q&A marathon.

The perfect storm evolves on two fronts; an overt economic war - as in siege by sanctions - and a concerted, covert, shadow attack to the heart of the Russian economy. Washington's endgame is clear: impoverish and defang the adversary and force him to meekly bow to the 'Empire of Chaos's whims. And bragging about it all the way to victory!

The problem is Moscow happens to have impeccably deciphered the game..."

The 'Blame Russia' Mainstream Media Chorus Over Ukraine  -  by Roger Annis

http://www.truth-out.org/speakout/item/28119-the-blame-russia-mainstream...?

"In the journalistic world of Russian 'annexations' and 'aggression' in Ukraine, most of the key events of the past year that have truly caused the political crisis are made to disappear, as if by magic.

The argument that frames the media bias is that Russia's actions have provoked the whole mess. Accusations of direct intervention by Russian troops are regularly trotted out, sometimes accompanied by suggestive photos of military equipment on the move. The follow up proof is never offered and soon after, the next cycle of invasion accusation begins..."

The Crazy US 'Group Think' on Russia  - by Robert Parry

"Has anyone in Official Washington thought about the latest foreign policy 'group think', the plan to destabilize nuclear-armed Russia? This reckless strategy appears to be another neocon-driven 'regime change' scheme, this time focused on Moscow with the goal to take down Russian President Vladimir Putin and presumably replace him with some US puppet, a Russian-speaking Ahmed Chalabi perhaps.

However, as catastrophic as the Iraq war was, especially for Iraqis, the new neocon goal of Russian 'regime change' is far more dangerous..."

It might be worth including Patrick Armstrong's merciless debunking of the endlessly mis-quoted claim that Russian President Putin wants to restore the USSR/Soviet Empire/etc. The mis-quote relates to the claim that Putin was alleged to have said that the collapse of the USSR was "the greatest disaster" of the 20th century.

Check it out for yourself.

swallow swallow's picture

That's a very interesting link, and the suggestion to go back to the original source rather than rely on others quoting it is an excellent one.

It may be worth reading the comments below it, and the[url=http://russialist.org/re-putin-soviet-geopolitical-disaster-re-2014-166-... response by Anders Aslund as well.

In a nutshell, the dispute seems to be whether or not Putin called the end of the USSR the greatest geopolotical catastrophe of the 20th century, or a major disaster (one of several disasters over the century). Armonstrong (the link ikosmos posted) cites the Russian and the offical Kremlin translation to say it's "a major" disaster - which it was, for many people, absolutely. Aslund, who he condemns in the linked article, points out that his translation from the Russian original was accurate, and the Kremlin's official translation ssoftened what Putin originally said - which he and google translate as "the greatest." It's a quick debunk of the Armstrong criticism. In other words: Armstrong might wish to take his own advice about consulting original sources more to heart.

That said, I don't believe the line that Putin's lamenting of the USSR means he want to rebuild it, necessarily.

Sure, let's have some more maybes, if necessary, but not necessarily more maybes.

I don't know Russian so I can't really argue the point, I just note that it's being argued, and that the Kremlin's official translation into English is not necessarily an unimpeachable source, perhaps. Maybe.

Maybe it's the case that the western branch of corporatism puts up an evil villian every now and then, such as Putin - as the stand in for all things Russian - and it falls to the loyal western corporate newz reader to 'tut-tut' along with every new evil story that gets planted.  In effect, it gives the average reader, right wing, centrists and social democratic leaning supporters alike, a false sense of purpose and empowerment to submit themselves, after being suitably prompted, into becoming the judges of Russian behaviour; the result of a lack of effectiveness that is their own sad, political legacy.

A somewhat different take on the sourge of Russophobia:

"I reject the argument Russians are somehow meant to live in a dictatorship. I've always found that approach (so popular among the pro-Putin camp in the West and inside the Kremlin) Russophobic and racist."

Russia's 'era of excess' ending with fallen ruble: Peter Pomerantsev

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/russia-s-era-of-excess-ending-with-fallen-ruble-peter-pomerantsev-1.2881797

... Russia isn't turning back, it sees itself as the true avant-garde in a chaotic 21st century where all the old, Western institutions (NATO, EU ) are geriatric, and the future belongs to rising, largely authoritarian regimes who define the rules as they go along. Russia's aim is to be a disrupter, a sort of corporate raider of globalization.

In foreign policy and war it has weaponized the use of money, culture and information, and combined them with covert military action. This could well be the trend for future conflict. And its ideology of triumphant cynicism is only growing worldwide. ...

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

"weaponized the use of money, culture and information," is right out of the neo con playbook ... in Ukraine and elsewhere. Furthermore, it's a common strategy of political demagogery to attribute to the other side what one's own side is doing. No surprise there.

[Money: claims that the ruble's collapse reflects Western sanctions, etc.

Culture: transparent attempts to urinate on the very successful Sochi Winter Olympics

Information: Noisy objections to Russian (and other) media that do not re-gurgitate the official line, plus a Russophobic campaign that exceeds those in Cold War I]

The weaponization of the use of money, culture, and information ... Peter Pomerantsev has this idea as the key one in a new book he's flogging. Oh goodie.

The ruble has recovered enormously from last week's precipitous drop. To paraphrase Mark Twain, the  rumours of the death of the Russian economy are greatly exaggerated.

Roger Annis - How Canada’s media gets Ukraine all wrong

When in doubt - blame Russia. This is the MSM approach to Russia.

And, I might add, large numbers of babblers have been drinking the Russophobic kool-aid in plentiful doses.

R Annis wrote:
MacKinnon provides a sympathetic description of the families’ circumstances and describes their divided opinions on what has caused the catastrophe in Donbas. The article’s title is drawn from the lament by the head of the family stuck near Kyiv: “We have no homeland.”

But the reader is left bewildered by it all. The scale of the catastrophe might suggest that a complex set of factors is involved. But MacKinnon has only one explanation: Russia did it....

Annis outlines a number of the key events that have been "disappeared" in order to justify the Russophobic narrative.

Quote:

Eastern Europe’s growing military buildup against Russia, to which Canada has contributed a warship, fighter aircraft and soldiers, now sees Canadian boots on the ground in Ukraine. It’s an exceptionally provocative and dangerous course that Canada and its allies have embarked upon.

The NATO imperialist countries are engaged in a political and military offensive in which all the peoples of the region — Ukrainian, Russian, Crimean and more — are threatened and already suffering. The international left needs to step up efforts to provide all available assistance so that a common struggle for social justice and national and language equality can be forged. That includes opposing the economic embargoes against Russia and Crimea.

Prince Dmitry Shakhovskoy wrote:

The aggressive hostility that Russia is facing right now is lacking any rationality and the double standard policy is simply exceeding any limits,” claim the authors of the message. “Russia is being accused of all crimes, it is pronounced guilty a priori and without any evidence, while other countries are shown surprising leniency, in particular when Human Rights are concerned,” they letter reads.

We cannot put up with daily slander targeting modern Russia, its leaders and its president, who are slapped with sanctions and smeared with dirt, in contradiction to basic reason.”

So, Putin has not only made peace (and an unholy alliance) with the Russian Orthodox Church, - now he is getting the support of tsarist royalty and nobility....

This should be celebrated on a progressive website? And haven't we seen this movie before?....

Putin is a conservative that no babbler should support were he to run for office in Canada. Now, it's probably good to add that at least Putin supports his own country - something that the Yanqui boot-licker S Harper fails to do - unlike some other conservatives.

What does it all mean? Neither Russia nor Putin are Canada's enemies. In fact, given that Russia is the only country in the world that has the same view about territorial internal waterways (North West Passage in Canada and the North East Passage in Russia) that Canada does, if the Canadian government had any spine then they could play the Americans against the Russians. Wimpy Conservatives goddam them all.

Obstinate Russphobia is just a means to serve the Empire. But the only service, in these terms, that's worthy is service to one's own country.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/30/alexei-navalny-breaks-house-arrest_n_6395886.html

Navalny's is a man of many labels in the western media. He labeled as an activist, blogger, opposition leader/Kremlin critic and anti-corruption campaigner

Western mass media wants us to believe Alexei Navalny is someone important in Russia

What kind of opposition is Navalny the leader of ? And how important is he, really?

Here is some context on Navalny, nationalism and 2012's rally

"Many liberals and non-ethnic Russians are deeply suspicious of Navalny. But their presentation of Navalny as a “new Hitler” is far-fetched. Blue-eyed, good-looking, a dash of the racist, yes, but not an especially silver-tongued one. Navalny tried to talk to the demonstrators in December but was catcalled more than once. His manner was too rude, as if he were talking to a street gang. He did not speak on the Saturday demo at all. His views are far from clear. When asked for a model state Russia should follow, Navalny said, “Singapore.” This is an odd choice for a person fighting Putin’s strong-arm style, as Lee Kuan Yew was probably more authoritarian than Putin".

Because he's a crook and a con-artist he's probably perfect for the big western media wurlitzer to re-package as a 'dissident' democrat persecuted by the evil Putin. I don't think it'll fly, in Russia anyway, but who knows here? If they can sell a fascist billionaire like Ukraine's Porky Poroshenko as 'a hero of the people's revolution' why not this hustler too?

Adam T

A new low for FSB disinformation officer NDPP.  Poroshenko was a member of the Social Democratic Party, a party associated with Socialist International which includes the NDP and holds generally left leaning views.  He holds no fascist views.

But, hey if fighting illegal seperatists and psycopathic thug Vladimir Putin makes one a 'fascist', then I guess the number of 'fascists' has climbed around the world by multi millions.

NS NS's picture

NDPP, No it will not fly in Russia but I am more concerned about how we are consumers of media are led to believe that Navalny is an important figure

That is what we were led to believe almost three years ago and now he's back in the news

Adam T, Navalny's biggest problem has been with the left and liberals saying that he is too close to farright and nationalist elements in Russia

That is a legitimate critique, I think

I am not sure if Navalny is necessarily part of a destabilization agenda

However, he is an activist of the type we have seen previously, playing a role, in yet another colour revolution/spring type operation

Is that why Alexei Navalny is being pushed into our consciousness, yet again?

NDPP

No idea NS...I don't think he's got enough political traction. But if the PTB of the Empire of Chaos do decide to try and make a new anti-Putin silk-purse out of this rather obviously flawed pig's ear, we'll know soon as these threads will suddenly fill with stuff similar to the one above yours. Navalny is associated with extreme rightist views, he's been convicted of embezzlement, and, of course, he's the darling of the State Department and the cabal of neo-conservative zealots now that G. Kasparov failed to get elected Dog Catcher in Russia.

Just as Navalny replaced Kasparov so too Xxx will replace Navalny once the latter fails to achieve the desired goal.

It's funny. The Russian Communists have been the second leading vote getters - after Putin's United Russia - for quite some time. Navalny, of course, has not a single deputy in the Duma (Parliament) to represent his views. Nada. Goose egg. Squat. Ziltch.

Funny then, that the Communists get zero attention and Navalny, and the other stooges of Western countries, get so much.

Then again, they are Communists and if it's one thing Russophobes hate more than Russians, it's Russian Communists! Plus, how do you denounce Putin as a former-KGB officer (Commie commie commie!) when the leading Opposition Party for a dog's age has been the Communists? Hard to square that circle. lol..

'We wouldn't be talking about this if Navalny hadn't been a beneficiary of NED funding, National Endowment for Democracy, the main regime-change institution funded by the US.

He's been at that well for a few years now. So it's not anymore a case of what Navalny actually did or not, it's the fact he has been used as somebody to foment political opposition to the legally elected Russian leadership..."

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Navalny isn't an Opposition Party. He's been designated as Putin's "leading political opponent" in Western corporate media, dutifully following the narrative of the State Department of the USA, despite ziltch in the way of evidence to support that claim.

But, hey! Since nonsense about Russia hardly ever gets punished, why not just make it up as you go along?

Polish Russophobia in The Economist

... and one commentator's perspective on this ...

Quote:
With a new year comes new instances of Polish paranoia:

"MARCIN WASZCZUK (pictured) is ready for action. Dressed in camouflage fatigues with a Polish flag on the shoulder, the heavyset 41-year-old is the head of Strzelec, one of Poland’s largest paramilitary organisations, and he wants to be prepared in case of a Russian attack...Now Mr Waszczuk wants to draw on Poland’s history of guerrilla warfare to cope with the challenges of an increasingly unpredictable Russia. “We are the continuation of the Home Army,” he says. The goal is to form light infantry units scattered around the country able to continue the fight “if there is an invasion and the Polish military is destroyed"".

Still, the journalistic question remains: what does the New York Times think a coup looks like? You have foreign money, including from the U.S. government, pouring into Ukraine to finance political and propaganda operations. You have open encouragement to the coup-makers from senior American officials.

You have hundreds of trained and armed paramilitary fighters dispatched to Kiev from Lviv and other western cities. You have the seizure of an arsenal amid rumors that these more powerful weapons are being distributed to these paramilitaries. You have international pressure on the elected president to pull back his security forces, even as Western propaganda portrays him as a mass murderer.

The West: BRAINS! Putin's brains!

a reply: yeah, right.

Putin's Brain: Reading his mind for fun and profit.

Quote:
Putin must have one powerful brain. I’ve seen actual evidence that he gives off brainwaves that are apparently being picked up by a variety of mind-sensitive observers. These people are primarily politicians, commentators, and journalists. They in turn tell the rest of us what Putin is thinking. They spew out Putin’s secrets and reveal what he’s really after.

This all differs from ESP (extra sensory perception) wherein there’s someone intentionally trying to send a neuronal message, and another person who is trying hard to receive it. In the case of Putin, he’s proclaimed no desire to transmit any inner thoughts. Here the receivers are more like extra sensory voyeurs peering in unnoticed by Putin.

So what are they telling us about Putin’s agenda? I did a Google search on the term “Putin wants” in order to see what the man’s secret agenda actually is and what he dearly wants. The first thing I discovered is there are a lot of media outlets reporting on this:

What Putin Wants (Time magazine, March 6, 2014)
What Putin Wants (The Atlantic, May 21, 2014)

This was starting to get voluminous. Fortunately Foreign Policy magazine stepped in to simplify things with this:

What Putin Wants, In a Nutshell (May 22, 2014)

and so on. The self-evident absurdity of the BS doesn't stop the endless claims that "they know" what Putin wants.

Think: infantalization.

And what is the conclusion of the author?

Quote:
... what I find is that people making and believing proclamations about what Putin wants fit into two general categories. The first group is made up of people who have political or commercial agendas of their own that are well served by the sweeping denigration of Putin, and, indeed, of Russia itself.

Members of the second group more innocently fall into a trap called “confirmation bias.” These people have heard the specious stories put out by the first group and have been taken in by them. As a result, each successive fabrication that comes along is accepted unquestioningly. That’s because the story likely confirms a bias that has already infiltrated their thinking. This has been going on for years. Some of the people in this second group are even making proclamations of their own now based on the internalized biases.

None of what I’ve written here is intended to prove anything positive or negative about Putin’s agenda. I have no idea what it is. But what I’ve found is that the most vocal critics who claim to know Putin’s mind are indeed charlatans and liars.

Brains! We know what's in Putin's brains!
