Nice to see the NDP finally come of age financially and have an election campaign bankroll like Canada's two right-wing parties.

This is going to make a huge positive difference for the NDP across Canada in the upcoming election.

Ballot box issues.

Jobs/Economy is by far the most important issue for Canadians, followed secondly by Healthcare.

Are you listening NDP?

Who is that media guy that was just on CTV's Power Politics with Don Martin - whatever, he's superb!!!

Don't often agree with Don Martin but so refreshingly better than that almost child-like hyper-partisan Liberal Solomon on CBC.

When some of those CBCers get together talking politics it is scary as it is almost cultlike.

Who is this guy? I like him already.

Nomination meeting set for federal NDP Larry Koopman one of two potential nominees

"Some of the things I'm passionate about — and this may sound strange coming from a New Democrat — but one of my key issues is jobs and the economy. That's something that the Conservatives don't own," Koopman said with a laugh.

But where Koopman differs from his Conservative competition is where he plans to find those jobs.

"The jobs and the economy that I see, that I really believe in, is an economy that's going to really benefit all members of society (and) an economy that's really built on sustainable growth," Koopman said.

"That's unlike the Conservative sort of 'rip it and ship it' kind of approach."

Koopman's approach would focus on the research and development of green technologies — including incentives for business — and energy conservation.

"I'm deeply concerned about the negative effects of climate change, the degradation of our fragile ecosystem," Koopman said.

"I don't see any real leadership or vision from the Conservatives, and I think what's desperately required is action and strong leadership to protect our environment."

But Koopman has his work cut out for him in a riding that has never been held by a member of the NDP — a fact he's well aware of.

"I have no illusions about the battle ahead," he said, adding that while the NDP did increase its vote in the last federal election, it was still a ways back of Weston.

In terms of issues facing the Sea to Sky riding, Koopman listed the proposed LNG Woodfibre plant and food security along the coast as some of the issues he's concerned about.

Koopman has been involved with the NDP riding association for more than 10 years, and president for two.

His love of politics, however, has gone on much longer.

"My background has always been the political science student with a history major, so I've always been interested and involved in politics in some fashion," he said.

"And so as far as where I'm at right now, I'm very keen to further that education, let's put it that way."

The other potential nominee for the NDP is Elizabeth Nordlund of Gibsons.

Last month, the Liberal Party announced that its candidate in the riding would be former West Vancouver mayor Pamela Goldsmith-Jones.

The next federal election is tentatively set for October 2015.

Light my fire baby, light my fire!

Mulcair expected to shed light on economic policy at caucus retreatTom Mulcair

Insiders say the strategy sessions will focus on what the NDP sees as two myths fostered by Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservatives.

One: that the Conservatives are prudent fiscal managers dedicated to economic growth and job creation and on the road to a budget surplus in the coming fiscal year.

Two: that a reckless, big-spending NDP government would ruin the progress that's been made, raise taxes and plunge the country back into deficit.

A perceived lack of economic expertise has long been an Achilles heel for the NDP, which has never formed a federal government.

However, New Democrats like to boast that provincial NDP governments have typically been the most fiscally prudent.

Mulcair is scheduled to kick off the two-day caucus retreat with a speech that is expected to shed some light on his economic policy.

And on Friday the gathering will hear from Kevin Page, the former parliamentary budget officer, who is expected to offer a harsh critique of the Harper government's fiscal record.

Kevin Page is speaking at the NDP cacus retreat, not even just at a convention which he might do for any party, but at a cacus retreat, could this be a sign that Kevin Page might run for the NDP is 2015? That would be a huge scoop.

Page stated he won't be entering the election for 2015. He stated that the NDP is the party that asked the "right questions".

NDP to face large bill after talks to settle satellite office dispute fail

January 16, 2015

GLEN MCGREGOR

Negotiations have stalled between the NDP and a House of Commons board that monitors MP spending to settle a multi-million-dollar dispute over alleged misuse of parliamentary resources.

The Board of Internal Economy and a group of NDP MPs both agreed in November to suspend a Federal Court case over the costs of the party’s mailings and its so-called satellite offices in Quebec while they attempted to resolve the matter out of court.

But a source familiar with the negotiations says the discussions haven’t resulted in any settlement and the board is expected to demand repayment of the House of Commons’ costs when MPs return from their winter recess at the end of the month.

The NDP went to Federal Court in July after the Board found their MPs owed the House $36,000 and Canada Post another $1.3 million for flyers sent out using the parliamentary mailing frank. The board found that the partisan nature of the two million documents violated House rules.

Just another case of the right wing liberals siding with the right wing conservatives to stick it to the offial opposition

Brachina

The Tories and Liberals are fucking thieves.

Debater

So the NDP is blaming others, and not taking any personal responsibility.

Ken S. acknowledged on other threads about this topic that the NDP was playing too close to the rules on the satellite offices.  How come most NDPers aren't willing to admit this?

Jacob Two-Two

Because it's bullshit. Any objective commentator can see that. A child could see it. They're hoping that the people who don't pay much attention won't figure out that it's bullshit, and that the smear will stick despite being groundless. Typical Con/Lib gutter politics. Everything they do drags down the national debate another notch.

Debater

He's not my favourite commentator since he's too conservative for my liking, but John Ivison said last year that the NDP satellite office scandal harmed Mulcair's credibility and was a serious error in judgment.  By fighting the lawsuit rather than taking personal responsibility for it, it kept the story alive for longer and made the NDP look entitled.  And Jennifer Ditchburn also said that the NDP was playing very close to the line.

NDP partisans may not want to acknowledge how this looks, but if you cast yourself around a bit outside of NDP circles, you'll find that Canadians aren't quite as approving of the NDP's conduct as you claim.

Jacob Two-Two

Has anyone claimed they were approving? Typical Liberal. The only thing that matters is how something can be spun, and right and wrong is irrelevent. I'm not sure how this little piece of mudslinging will play with the public, but it has the virtue of being easy to disprove, for those who actually take the time to listen. Obviously the scumbags in the Lib/Con camp are hoping few people will. Fear and lies are their only strategy.

Unfortunate lack of federal leadership.

Trudeau says carbon pricing should be left to provinces

While Trudeau appears keen to applaud — and rely on — provincial initiative, the Harper government's ability to meet its emissions targets already relies on provincial government action. It just doesn't make a point of saying so too loudly.

Federal regulations to curb greenhouse gas emissions for some sectors have been delayed for years. In that vacuum, Canada has benefited from provincial emissions regulations and other strategies brought in by premiers engaged in the issue, such as Ontario's decision to shut down its coal plants.

"A lack of federal leadership on climate change has been the main reason Canada has not taken any concerted action to reduce emissions," NDP environment critic Megan Leslie wrote CBC News. "Now, in his first major policy announcement, Justin Trudeau boldly commits to more of the same failure?‎"

"Whether Conservative or Liberal, Canada can't afford another government that refuses to tackle climate change," she said.

Rafferty named NDP's pension critic

John Rafferty has a new role in the House of Commons.

The NDP MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River on Friday was named his party’s official opposition critic for pensions.

In a release, Rafferty said he was proud to take over the responsibility.

“Tom Mulcair’s NDP is focused on making the economy work for Canadians. Retirement security and enhancing both public and private pension plans are integral to achieving this,” said Rafferty, who plans to draw on his experience helping displaced workers at Buchanan Forest Products when that company filed for bankruptcy.

Well I'm very upset that Libby Davies has been dropped as Opposition Health Critic. She has been replaced by Murray Rankin

What's worse is that she has been MOVED OUT of her primo seat in the HOC. She used to sit beside Leader Thomas Mulcair, which was her right as the senior deputy leader.

Now she has been REMOVED from that spot, and shoved three seats away.

Megan Leslie now sits where Libby used to sit, right beside Tom Mulcair.

Shabby treatment for such a beloved MP in the NDP family.

ajaykumar

Megan Leslie has to sit closer to Mulcair, her riding is going red. Trudeaumaina!

NorthReport

There is no story here.

Tom is just readying for the next election and Libby fully supports him, as Tom supports her.

How do you know what Libby is thinking? You a close person friend of hers?

She shouldn't of been moved from her current spot as she is SENIOR Deputy Leader.

You don't treat people like that. She is very senior person in the NDP. She should stay in her current spot until the writ drops. That is how senior she is in the party.

Seems like you copy and pasted that from the other thread with more BS talking points. Wow libs really working overtime around here to TRY to make the NDP look bad...for showcasing that even their backbench is talented.  Heaven forbid a competant government not run by the corporations.

Libby knows the score, the needs of the party have to come before personal ego. I have no doubt she supports this 100%

So everyone here can just preach to the converted.

Then that way you will be happy to be rid of anyone and everyone that is not a Dipper.
