Canadians, in the upcoming federal election, will have an opportunity to aspire to some Planet Earth leadership by supporting Tom Mulcair, Canada's foremost principled political leader, concerning global warming. Tom is going to have lots of ammunition in the coming election to attack the environmental inaction of our right-wing Liberal and Conservative governments:

‘Hottest Year’ Story Obscures Bigger News: Ocean Warming Now Off The Charts

The big climate news last week was NOAA and NASA announcing that 2014 was the hottest year on record, breaking the highs of 2005 and 2010. But the bigger story got buried: Global warming has continued unabated in recent years.

Indeed, it’s not just that there not been a hiatus or pause or even slowdown in surface temperature warming (see below). The oceans, where the vast majority of human-caused global warming heat goes, have seen an acceleration in warming in recent years. As climate expert Prof. John Abraham writes in the UK Guardian, “The oceans are warming so fast, they keep breaking scientists’ charts.”

Remember, more than 90 percent of human induced planetary warming goes into the oceans, while only 2 percent goes into the atmosphere, so small changes in ocean uptake can have huge impact on surface temperatures. That’s a key reason surface temperatures haven’t appeared to warm as fast as many had expected in the past ten years — although ocean warming has sped up, and sea level rise hasaccelerated more than we thought , and Arctic sea ice has melted much faster than the models expected, as have the great ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica

But here’s where the media’s sometimes single-minded focus on one statistic — the hottest year on record — misses the real story from the latest scientific data and analysis. The human-caused rise in surface air temperatures never paused, never even slowed significantly. And that means we are likely headed toward a period of rapid surface temperature warming. Here’s why.

Dr. Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies, tweeted last week “Is there evidence that there is a significant change of trend from 1998? (Spoiler: No.)” He attached this chart, which uses NASA’s latest data:

I like this direction Thomas Mulcair is taking.

That vid left me a little cold. I think tom like Layton is better in the house, but layton by his second and third campaign was good on the trail.

Tom's better then Jack was outside the house then Jack was and learning fast. Mulcair is a smart man and under alot of pressure, a fuck ton of pressure, but he's the type of man who shines under pressure. In fact I don't remember a federal leader even being under this much pressure in the history of the NDP, no one ever thought the NDP even had a shot before 2011, and even with this Trudeaumania bullshit, most pundits admitted that Mulcair still has a shot at becoming Prime Minister.

But I have faith in Tom and his ability to grow and adapt.

Mulcair's reaction to Harper's proposals to increase the use of preventive detention and permit the CSIS to "disrupt" "radical websites"? Well, let's just say, Tommy Douglas he ain't:

Let's face it, it's a trap. What's Trudeau's position?

Anti-Terror Bill C-51: Opposition Parties Treading Carefully

Initial reaction from opposition parties was cautious and muted. Privacy advocates and civil libertarians expressed fears about trampled rights and inadequate oversight.

The proposed expansion of CSIS powers also conjured memories of past misdeeds — such as burning a barn to prevent a meeting of radicals — by the old RCMP security service, the scandal-plagued outfit from whose ashes CSIS rose three decades ago.

They're both cowards.

more powers to CSIS? What could that possibly be?

I remember the days of the anti Olympics movement of Vancouver...CSIS swooped in, threatening and detaining activists, so they already have police powers, or was this all supposedly illegal? As if any judge would dare stop them in a Court of law!

This is an act of support and encouragement to CSIS...we all better be prepared for the consequences!

Strategic action discussion here or anywhere is crucial!

Well stated Brachina...  Tom has been a pressure cooker over decades and has sharp skills for tackling the challenges he'll face over the next number of months.
