Do we really need a seperate "election 2015" forum?

If I wasn't in the habit of browsing threads via the Active Topics page I'd probably welcome this as a type of a quarantine. As it stands, it probably won't affect my babble experience, but I have no problem with it.

I'm going to argue that no we don't. The election related threads could easily go in the Canadian Politics forum. There isn't a clear distinction between election and non-election discussion when it comes to Canadian politics at this point, and thus there's no clear distinction as to whether a thread belongs in the Canadian Politics or election 2015 forums.

Case in point. the current federal Liberal candidates thread is in the election 2015 forum, while the current federal NDP candidates thread is in Canadian politics. And the discussions in the latest polling threads, which are all in the Canadian politics forum are often more directly related to the election that the discussions in the threads titled "election 2015". So if the mods can't make a clear distinction between which threads to move to the election 2015 forum, and those to keep in the Canadian politics forum, I don't believe that all of the babblers creating new canadian political threads can either.

Then when the election is over, this arbitrary distinction will lead to the threads in the election 2015 forum being unnecessarily "archived".

Mr. Magoo

Could be worse.  EnMasse has an "Election 2008" forum.

Except that there's no clear way to determine which threads need to be "quarantined". As I pointed out, the mods couldn't make a clear distinction when they decided which threads to move to the new forum, and there's no way that all babblers who create new threads are going to make the same distinction. Election related threads are going to wind up in both forums, as is already happening.

Ah, so this is already in effect. I hadn't even noticed, which at least confirms my second point.

Which makes it that much more egregious, because the mods didn't make the case that this was needed.

There's a separate election 2015 forum? Since when?

As you can see, I'm very alert and detail oriented.

I think our overworked mods came up with a decent idea in creating this forum, but just didn't have time to move all the 643,212,951 Election 2015 oriented threads into it. So, I'm going to take it on myself to compile that list and demand that they be moved into a more hygienic quarantined area where they're less likely to affect the general public. Gimme a minute.

Oh, and guess what - when the election is over and died down, what prevents all those Election 2015 threads from simply being moved back, en bloc (so to speak), to the Canadian Politics forum, where generations of young activists can scroll back and see what elders' errors to avoid?

Unionist

Ok - here is a partial list of Canadian Politics threads that could be moved to Election 2015 forum - and moved back after the election is well and truly over. I apologize for any omissions or misplacements:

Will a Babbler in Montreal head over to Outremont and buy this man a beer? Or a bag of birdseed? Or something to recognize his labours for the common good?

lagatta

Actually, he lives in Côte-des-neiges. (Part of CDN is in Outremont riding, which actually comes to a few streets from my house in the other direction). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outremont_%28electoral_district%29 http://tinyurl.com/Outremont-Map I live in Petite-Italie, in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie riding. You can see my street and block on the map, on the other side of the CP railway line. Note that a lot of Outremont riding is taken up by our so-called mountain, with no residents but birds and wee beasties. And most of Université de Montréal lies within the riding, except perhaps a few buildings that are west of Côte-des-Neiges (the street).

It's been so bloody cold that I haven't been up on Mont-Royal all winter, to observe birds and furtive creatures.

I really favour this corral, because if not babble will become nothing but a sounding board for the Federal elections.

The election threads could be moved back, en bloc, to the Canadian Politics forum, once the election dies down; but past prtactise on babble has been to "archive" the election forum, threads and all, after the election in question. And because the mods didn't consult babblers before creating the "election 2015" forum, I don't trust that they won't simply archive the "election 2015" forum, and all threads therin, when the election is over.

Why does that matter?  Won't they still be as searchable?

None of the old election forums can be found on babble. Which means that no, you can't search them. They were "archived" for a period, and then "deleted".

Would the mods please weigh in on this topic?

I'm in the process of moving the threads on the list (thanks Unionist for your hard work!) and we can revisit what gets archived and what gets moved back to Canadian Politics after the election.

Perhaps we could offer Unionist a meal at Aunt Dai, which is in CDN, isn't expensive and generally has good reviews http://auntdai.com/ Also a bring your own wine or beer if anyone likes to imbibe. I wouldn't mind the Ma po tofu on a frigid daly like today! Think I'll just make myself some hot tea...
