NDP caucus instructed not to speak to Halifax Chronicle Herald because of press operators lockout

Paul McLeod Ottawa bureau chief for the Halifax Chronicle Herald, All of his tweets

"NDP members of Parliament have been directed not to speak to me because Chronicle Herald press operators lockout."

"Apparently speaking to a reporter who works for such an organization counts as crossing the picket line."

"As I'm the only Herald worker in Ottawa, they're essentially enacting a one-man boycott against me for now."

"Sorry Nova Scotians, but if you're wondering what the official opposition thinks of policies apparently I won't be able to tell you."

"I feel like Sun News all of the sudden."

"Cannot wait for the next time an NDP press sec talks to me about how they don't get enough coverage in my stories."

Freelance reporter Justin Ling just tweeted in response

"I will also be respecting the instructions of the union bosses and will not speak to @pdmcleod until the Chronicle Herald lockout is over."

I can't see why this would be a problem. Seems like they're doing the right thing here. Am I missing something?

Paul McLeod sounds like a real asshole. My apologies if it turns out he's just a fake asshole.

I expect babblers to boycott this Chronicle Herald until the union tells us otherwise.

Bravo to the NDP!

I think it's a great object lesson in the kind of piece of shit that gets chosen to invent "news". This McLeod creep dares to express his pathetic indignation at the NDP caucus solidarity with the locked-out workers, with no fear whatsoever that his boss will sanction him for being subjective on news matters. He knows, of course, that in licking the backside of the press barons, he cannot possibly incur any harm. This is a fantastic object lesson in how public opinion is manufactured in this country - like, for example, the "polls" saying that everyone wants Harper to be able to crush whatever he defines as terrorism.

Paul McLeod deserves to be the target of his own special boycott. I dearly hope he loses his job, falls into the ranks of the unemployable, so that he can then write a good personal account of what life is really like in this capitalist system that he so obviously loves.

How did I do, terrytowel?

Of course. So, what's your opinion?

Back off Unionist.

The Libs on Babble are here simply to foster and facilitate discussion amongst progressives, not take principled positions of their own.

If that is what the NDP wants to do, more power to them.

True.  The press in this country is largely anti-labour, anti-NDP, and yes, even anti-Liberal, too.  The only 'Liberal' newspaper is The Toronto Star.

As Tim Harper wrote in The Star last week, every major daily newspaper in Canada except The Toronto Star endorsed Stephen Harper in 2011.  Canada now has a more conservative-dominated media than the United States.  Most of the media in Canada is owned by conservatives.  The Asper family used to be Liberal a couple of decades ago.  They are Harper supporters now.  The Globe & Mail, which used to be a centrist newspaper, is now almost as conservative as the National Post and is amongst Harper's biggest supporters.

The majority of executives on the CBC Board of Governors are now Harper appointed.  Many of them even have made financial contributions to the Conservative Party.  There was a story & flow chart published a couple of months ago showing the current structure of the CBC and how it has become more conservative controlled every year.

Canada needs a network like MSNBC in the United States.  MSNBC is able to counter some of the Republican propaganda on FOX News.  We unfortunately do not have a Canadian counterpart in this country.

Thanks for that sherpa-finn though again I'm a progressive independent.

Thanks, sherpa-finn, I recognize irony when I see it - being an addict myself! Tongue out

Unlike my kids, who used to be aggressive dependents.

This was from Feb. 23:

[url=http://halifax.mediacoop.ca/story/herald-union-asks-readers-cancel-subsc... union asks readers to cancel subscriptions for duration of lockout[/url]

Quote:

The lockout of thirteen unionized Chronicle Herald pressroom workers has now entered its second day.

Monday's Chronicle Herald was printed by replacement workers who were escorted into the plant on Bluewater Road in Bedford under heavy security.

Today workers picketed the Chronicle Herald headquarters on Joe Howe Drive, not far from the Armdale Rotary.

Meanwhile the paper filed an injunction against the pickets.

Now the Chronicle Herald workers are asking for a bit of help from the paper's readers, Ingrid Bulmer, president of the Halifax Typographical Union (HTU), tells the Halifax Media Co-op.

“We are asking readers to phone the Herald and cancel their subscription for the duration of the lockout,” Bulmer says.

“But we definitely want people to come back once the lockout is settled,” Bulmer hastens to add.
