What a dumb comment!  Frown

Pondering

When you link to a picture, before posting it you can change the size so it fits the space. I don't know if you can do it through editing.

Posting Conservative attack ads on babble, very amusing.

Old news, North Report.  This quote, taken out of context, was made a year ago.

And I see you're continuing your daily work on behalf of the Conservative Party - even using one of their ads!

If I didn't know better, some (who aren't familiar with rabble) would conclude this is a Conservative discussion forum with all the Trudeau bashing that goes on.

I think the CONS will win. So the more you guys bash Trudeau, the larger the CON majority is going to be.

Another day, another anti-Trudeau thread. It's getting boring but when you start whipping out Tory attack ads it becomes pathetic.

EXACTLY!

I've been pointing this out for a long time.  I agree 100%.

A lot of progressives are probably turned off when they visit Rabble.  And it's not just Trudeau that gets attacked here regularly, but Elizabeth May, too!

Meanwhile there are only a handful of threads that expose how dangerous Stephen Harper is for Canada.

Exactly, can't you Trudeau haters come up with something more original to say?

The 'Budget will balance itself' line has already been used by the CONS in radio ads. And now you Dippers are just getting around to using that attack line? The Cons have already moved on from that line of attack.

Again to assure the CONS of a huge majority, just keep up these attacks against Trudeau.

When the CONS win again, you guys will have nobody to blame but yourselves.

Your shill talk sounds increasingly Harperesque.Trudeau's easy enough to go after onsimple facts...

Now that we have had the expected absurd comments from the usual suspects, let's try focus on the great article that was linked to at the beginning of this thread:

Very astute comments about pollsters, aggregators, mainstream press, etc., as garbage in = garbage out.

Quote:
Take pollsters with a grain of salt – and make that a five-pound bag when they are doing their surveys for an election that hasn’t been called. Remember that not all polls are created equal. There are real pollsters with proven methodologies and there are those who fly by night. There are professionals who aim to reveal public opinion, and partisans in pollsters’ clothing who use pretend polls to generate their own public opinion.

Don’t forget, the prime minister’s former parliamentary secretary, Dean Del Mastro, actually commissioned a poll during Ontario’s 2011 election to answer other polls he didn’t like. If you care, take a close look at the methodology, the questionnaires, and the track records of any pollster whose work catches your eye. These guys are part soothsayer and part social scientist. You have to be careful to figure out which trait dominates. Better yet, pay little attention to the daily prattle of duelling polls.

Ignore the endorsements of newspapers. They are now almost all owned by big corporations and for the most part put out a pro-big-business message. That’s fair, but remember it’s also 100 per cent self serving.

Here's more from that excellent article above:

This is why election campaigns are a complete waste of time. People now should know who they are voting for, and if not, that's their problem to sort out. Most people are really NOT that interested in the outcome of the election anyways, as they have way more important things to do with their valuable time.

Quote:
Finally, watch the all-candidates television debate with the same expectation of getting answers as you do from Question Period. One of two things will happen. Either all the candidates won’t be there, or there won’t be a debate. The consortium of television networks that devises these exercises in chastity-belt communications works for the pols not the people.

Bottom line? The TV executives can be counted on to come up with a format with less life in it than a dead dog. Pretty soon even these stillborn events will be seen as too risky for the leaders to participate in. Take note. Prime Minister David Cameron’s handlers have been trying to come up with a publicly acceptable way of boycotting the TV debate in the UK’s current national election.

Final note on street-proofing your vote? Inform yourself. Look at what the people who want their power renewed have done with it so far, and at what those who seek power say they will do if they get it.

Above all, don’t cast your ballot out of fear.

On that subject, the last word goes to H.L. Mencken:

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the population alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

In other words — vote like Spock.

The Conservatives at least in BC are sure getting a lot of mileage out of Justin's "the budget will balance itself" quote. Probably almost enough to offset the Vancouver Harbour oil spill damage they incurred.

Brachina

You seem to have hit a.nerve with the boards Liberals NR :-)

That being said, I've pointed out why the attacks on Trudeau on this are bullshit, but I've also.pointed out that it doesn't matter, most people will only hear a Trudeau sounding like a fool on the radio and the ads will do they're job.

I like to think of it as Harper doing Mulcair's work for him in taking Justin Trudeau out, it will bite Harper in the ass when he loses the next election to Tom Mulcair.

Sean in Ottawa

As I pointed out before this is a silly argument coming from NDP supporters.

The concept of a budget self-correcting as the economy improves is long held and very true.

In this case I disagree with Trudeau as the Harper government has undermined the long term finances of the governemnt with cuts that must be reversed -- so the budget cannot right itself in light of the cuts Harper has made. But this is an opinion of math not principle and Trudeau should not be ridiculed for what is a fair comment even if we may disagree about there being enough rise in the economy to deal with the tax cuts.

I will point out as I have in the past that this debate was huge in 1993-4 in Ontario when the then NDP government stated that huge cuts were not needed as the budget would balance as the economy improved. They were right of course and the budget would have been balanced a lot faster if the Harris government had not come in and slashed taxes when they did.

It is perfectly reasonable to presume that cyclical deficits in bad times do not need corrective action -- just as surpluses in better times do not need to be completely drained in tax cuts.

As I understood it this is all Trudeau really was saying here.

My opinion on Trudeau is he already says enough to legitimately take issue with that there is no need to go after more resonable comments like this.

And I don't like to play in to Conservative frames about how to see budgets, the economy or even other opposition leaders.

Brachina

I agree Sean, but I also acknowledge that the way Trudeau said it and the Tories approach to the ads makes Trudeau look bad, I'm not attacking him for that position, just enjoying the spectacle is all.
