‘No reason’ Conservatives, NDP shouldn’t get behind Trudeau’s environmental plan: Jean Charest

Global News

OTTAWA —There is “no reason” for the Harper Conservatives and NDP to not get in line with the Liberal plan to reduce overall carbon emissions by allowing provinces to design their own policies to meet them, said former Quebec premier Jean Charest.

Earlier this year, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said that should he become prime minister, his priorities would include sitting down with the provinces to set national environmental goals. Although the goal would be national, it would remain up to the provinces to decide how to achieve them.

“I think that’s good. I think there’s no reason the Harper government and NDP should not be in the same place,” Jean Charest, an adviser to the Ecofiscal Commission, said in an interview on The West Block with Tom Clark. “What’s important is we get some action.”

I am not saying the NDP should not do this but it is easy to see reasons to give pause.

First, there are effects on interprovincial trade. There is a need for a coordinated national approach if possible.

The specific program Charest is promoting was first discussed federally by the NDP - Cap and trade. For this reason the NDP is likely to be fairly open to the design of the program -- even if it wants to see a federal model with equal application across the country.

Oh well, at least I know what policy the Libs are trying to steal from the NDP and call their own when he does. Thanks Debater.

Pondering

The Ecofiscal Commission is sketchy at best.

Scroll down, Preston Manning is one of the advisors as is Bob Rae and Paul Martin. Charest is there and surely thinking of his Plan Nord.

Suncor Energy is one of the funders along with a whole bunch of oligarch family foundations.

They know that tougher regulations are coming and they want to be in on deciding just how stiff they will be. They want to paint themselves as being responsible people that support needed reforms. The CEO of the David Suzuki Foundation is there but looking at the rest of the names it is obviously a consortium of status quo elites.

It doesn't necessarily make them wrong but it is a stop gap measure not a solution.

To claim to represent an Ecofiscal approach requires more eco and less fiscal. Climate change is devastating and a carbon tax is not enough to stop it.

That group is a lot more fiscal than they are eco.

Indeed. Good catch, Pondering.

Uh, it's not an LPC press release.

It's an interview with Jean Charest, who has no connection with the Federal Liberals.

The point being made is the article calls this a Liberal plan. Cap and trade was the plan the NDP promoted while the Liberals were on carbon tax. Remember?

Worth pointing out that it is pretty funny seeing cap and trade presented as a Liberal plan.
