I haven't been able to find a video of the whole speech.  But there is a description of it here:  http://newstalk650.com/content/elizabeth-may-very-apologetic-about-speech

NDPP

Oh there's lots of 'descriptions', none of them flattering and May herself has apparently apologized for it, but with an ending that superb, I too now want to hear more...in vino veritas maybe...

May managed to turn Harper's cabinet into the victim, when it should have been Omar Khadr.

She is a Tory.

Apparently Raitt leading May off stage was a preplanned part of the act, according to this site:  http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/canadian-politics/omar-khadr-yo...

Quote:
The Saanich-Gulf Islands MP also describes Raitt, a member of the federal cabinet, as a close friend, and thought her sudden presence on stage would enhance the joke.

Great statement, and the akwardness of the moment could be forgiven, if the sentiment of the last line was sincere and not a bad attempt at recovering for an off colour  "joke", adding insult to injury to embarassment.

Quote:
Putting her arm around the Transport Minister, the Green Party leader holds up her smartphone to the microphone as it plays the theme song to Welcome Back Kotter, a 1970s TV show starring a young John Travolta.

“Hang on, you know what? You guys remember this theme song? Who knew Kotter was spelled K-H-A-D-R! Welcome back Omar Khadr, you’re home,” said May.

Wow.

I can understand why you might think Raitt being on the stage was part of the act, but if you read closely you will see that May thought it would "enhance" the bit but to me it looks like she ad libbed. The f bomb was supposed to be part of a larger bit but when Raitt appeared she went off her script. That and her apology and her explanation of being sleep deprived as a rationale for her strange behaviour makes it appear that the whole thing was strange. May did herself no favours here and I agree that she made the Tories look good. A Tory cabinet minister is leading her off so that she stops making a fool of herself and she uses that opportunity to swear at them.

Glenl

The message was lost in the delivery. Ms May didn't help herself or her party.

The current Conservative Part of Canada and it's members are not "Tory(ies)", and those who call them as such enable them to get votes they wouldn't otherwise get.

Getting back to the topic of thread, I really enjoyed Elizabeth May's comment, and part of me is disappointed that she apologized for it.

Another part of me is well aware that many people probably didn't like it, and the Conservatives may benefit from it.

Unfortunately for May it wasn't just the last comment. Huffington for example called the speech "weird". May also said that she was sleep deprived and that explains her behaviour. I personally am prepared to accept that at face value since I know when I have been sleep deprived my judgement has been suspect.

Caissa

I am not sure how to Raitt this performance.

mark_alfred

Ironically, her failed attempt at humour that fell disastrously flat (that being, goody-two-shoes proper decorum May talks and talks becoming more agitated to the point where she swears at cabinet while ironically being kindly assisted by a cabinet minister), has given her more exposure and credit with many than had she done something that worked out to actually be funny.

Paladin1

Very awkward speech.  It reminded me of a drunken wedding speech that makes everyone squirm in their seats.

I don't really buy the "I was sleep deprived" angle.  I would if the speech was an improv speech, but it was clearly planned.

Caissa

On Facebook, Dawn Black described it as "cringe worthy."

Sleep deprived is a polite way of putting it. Sharing wine with journalists will hit you harder when you're sleep deprived.

Doesn't help the green brand federally. Maybe she could run for Mayor of Toronto.

Will May have to resign over this - she should but I'm sure she won't.

I read somewhere on the net that May made some similarly

"Strange" comments in Pr Edward
Is lately but no details were given. Does anyone know about this?

Stockholm

She was obviously drunk out of her mind...what a horrific performance - and all coming from the most self-righteous, sanctimonious, prig in Canadians politics - Elizabeth May - next stop "the Gong Show"!

There were also those strange comments she made a few years ago comparing politicians who don't take action against climate change to Neville Chamberlain in Munich...and then saying with a straight face that unless she was elected to parliament "our planet would die" - barf!

I don't mind so much that there was a brief moment of truth telling, but you don't get to tell the truth these days in the given politics and expect to walk away without an apology to the ones that brought you in on the charades.

This is one of the better ways of describing her performance. Does she apologize? No, she comes out with excuses, like when she screwed up supporting Ghomeshi. That wasn't her fault either.

Lizzie is a narcissist that doesnt know how to do self deprecating humour. Using serious issues like Kadr and Indigeneous rights are no laughing matter.

I was there and I can say that she didn't seem drunk to me.

Still, one hell of an exit line, despite her awful grovelling apology. The only thing better and more accurate would have been for her to say:

Omar Khadr, you've got more class than the whole fucking parliament!'

Pictures of Khadr smiling carrying severed hands still resonate poorly with a lot of Canadians.  Her comments are pretty polarizing. Worst still her behavior showed a lack of situational awareness and control.   I totally get people make bad speeches or tell jokes that just aren't funny but in the realm of politics the fallout over it is 100 times more significant.

NDPP

OLD I seriously think that is a brilliant idea!

6079_Smith_W

Who even remembers this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ2FmGOU4tE

As for her being a woman, you can add collusion with the Liberals, perceived threat to the NDP, and everything else about her values and style that might not align with people's doctrine as justification for this attitude.

Reacting with outrage to an uncomfortable, unprofessional outburst, rather than looking at why that outburst happened is the sort of thing I expect from the At Issue Panel.

Is she really the one who should be ashamed here?

It's politics. If you sneeze and I don't say bless you I'll have the coaliation for ettiquette screaming for my resignation.   If I do say bless you I'll have people screaming for my resignation because I'm too religious.

NorthReport

Let's face it may was drunk and everyone knows it but that is acceptable as opposed to being on that evil weed

A lie. 1. Because most Canadians have never seen or heard of this alleged photo. 2. The alleged photo is not of Omar Khadr.

And I didn't know that being impolitic was now grounds for resignation in Canada. I wish more politicians were impolitic: it would let me know more easily which ones deserve my contempt and which ones, like Elizabeth May, deserve my respect.

NorthReport

This is embarrassing for May
Her credibility has been hurt
But more importantly she has damaged the Green Party brand
Harper does not attend these dinners and who can blame him
Harper is just a little to smart for this crap

kropotkin1951

E-May tried to use a young man who has suffered cruel and unusual punishment as a punchline in a very bad joke and then she apologizes to Herr Harper. I find the whole thing vomit inducing.

NorthReport

Greg Weston just tore May to shreds on power play and said if she wasn't drunk it is even worse because it showed a terrible lapse in judgement

NDPP

Here's her full speech. I must say given the dismal reality of the Canadian political class, this is one of the better not the worst. And again the final line is right between the eyes...

This is ridiculous. Save your rage and disgust for: Bill C-51, anti-terrorism hysteria, musing about making Israeli boycotts "hate speech," austerity budgets, climate change quietism, environmental cuts, and hyped-up foreign wars -- all of which, it should be said, Elizabeth May fights with dignity, courage and eloquence.

"Vomit inducing" indeed.

I'll do some research and see if I can find solid references about the picture being fake but even if it's 100% fake I still think enough people have seen it and believe it. that doesn't make it right but it influences voters never the less. The US government did a great job at making him look like a monster.

Being impolitic isn't legal grounds for a resignation but I'm pretty sure you've seen how people on social media behave and now pretty much anything is a cause for regination.  I'm not saying I think she should resign, I'm saying I'm surprised that someone would be surprised that people are.  It's pretty much the norm in politics these days.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Clarification: I am not surprised that people are calling for her resignation. I am surprised that babblers are. But, that too could be foolish.

NDPP

I would say in closing, since the political culture there and here is so thoroughly corrupt, that having confessed to the crime herself, any defence is effectively foreclosed. At the end it appears the vino veritas was only temporary. According to Ms May herself.

I have enough rage to include a politician using Omar for politiclal laughs. Maybe you should add to your repertoire of things to be outraged against. As far as I know there is no limit except self imposed ones. Your view of what is vomit inducing is just one persons and IMO quite deserving of derision.

If she is sleep-deprived it means she needs to see a doctor. No one would shame her for that. I think people would be quite supportive.

Politically, I don't think anything will hurt the Greens long-term. They are going to grow over the long term.

Yeah, I agree.  Asking her to resign is going too far.  I think Don Martin asked her about resignation during toight's interview, too.

There's no doubt that May was off-key during this performance, but it's terrible the way the right-wing media is piling on her tonight.  This topic is leading all the political shows this evening and is distracting attention away from more important matters like the way the Harper Government is persecuting Omar Khadr and the way it used Canadian soldiers as promotional props for the PM's propaganda videos last week.
