Somebody who has problems sleepinig is going act in a number of ways that others may not find to be perfect. She may act in manners considered to be "erratic" or "bizarre". It is extremely obvious to anyone who has experience with this kind of thing that there are going to be many symptoms. Religous ideation. Megalomania. Maybe even some delusions of grandeur, leading others to see her as "arrogant", "sanctimonious", etc.

After it was really really really really clear that Ms. May needs to see a doctor for her sleeplessness, condemning her for her condition would come from someone with a substandard set of ethics and a complete lack of sensitivity whatsoever. If you don't have any experience with these matters, back the fuck off and shut the fuck up.

You are making yourself look arrogant, consdesceding, sanctimonious, narcissistic, and manipulative. You are doing an Internet shaming while hiding behind the anonymity of your on-line handle, and exposing the lack of character that you are. After all these years, you have finally exposed yourself as the worst kind of human being imaginable. Someone who kicks a woman when she is down. There are other words I would like to use to describe you, but I cannot use them on this forum.

Leave Elizabeth May the fuck alone. If I see any more of this baiting, I will cause more pain.

Fuck off, asshole.

I endorse the sentiment May expressed in the speech, regardless of the phrasing.

I watched her entire speech and couldn't identify a single view or expression that I found wrong or "offensive". I might have missed something, but that was my overall impression.

I wish I could say the same for some of the posts above.

agree, i especially liked the commentary about throwing the dinner rolls and the closet!!!!!

Its hard to have any sympathy for May's drunken rant and meltdown because she's such an unsympathetic character. There is no one in Canadian politics as arrogant, sanctimonious, self-righteous, condescending, narcissistic and manipulative as Elizabeth May - so forgive us for feeling some schadenfreude at seeing her make such a fool of herself.

I find this over-the-top.

And we are seeing significant over-reaction from a number of directions to this speech.

Does Elizabeth May have an actual medical condition diognosed by a doctor?

Elizabeth May doesn't have problems sleeping. She has problems with pacing herself. She could say no and skip events, but that might disappoint her supporters. Everyone wants to meet the Queen.

This was all of her own making.

Clarification: I am not surprised that people are calling for her resignation. I am surprised that babblers are. But, that too could be foolish.

Some babblers are condemning her for the same reason they always do - that she takes more courageous stands on a variety of issues than the tightly-scripted scaredy-cat NDP would ever do. It's the narcissism of small differences.

For example, the indignant outraged comments above about making jokes about Omar Khadr. Except in the case of krop (and I agree with him about May's vomit-inducing apology), not one of them gives the slightest shit that the NDP has said NOTHING about the release of Khadr, no condemnation of the Harperites for continuing to slander and persecute him...

The NDP must still be counting polls to decide whether they dare mention the name of the savage terrorist Khadr. Or did I miss some fine print somewhere? I apologize in advance if they've done the right thing.

May welcomed Khadr and told the plain truth, that he is a far better human being than the totality of Harper's cabinet of monsters. Whoops, sorry for being profane, so fucking fire me.

I think some of you need to chill out, relax, and have a Twinkie. It was a political comedy dinner where politicians make humorous pot shots at their political rivals, and make jokes about themselves - self deprecating humour. Elizabeth May did exactly what she was supposed to do. The f bomb was a part of her humour because she never talks like that in public. She was trying to be funny., and you can even see her grin when she said it. She was not drunk. She has no medical problems. She is a normal, classy lady who went on stage to have some fun, and she nicely tied in First Nations and human rights issues into her speech beautifully. I am not a Green supporter, but I have gained a lot of respect for Elizabeth May for how she was able to tie all these topics together without preparation, and to portray herself in a more comedic light. She is not a comedian, she is a politician, and most comedians have off performances that do not resonate with their target audiences. Most people are not listening to the content, and they are taking her speech far too seriously.

If Mr Harper gave a speech like that instead of Mrs May I don't think people here would be too quick to let him off the hook and chalk it up to a poopy performance. I'd bet most would be demanding he loose his job. No?

I don't think Steven Harper could ad lib like Elizabeth May. Actually, I don't think any of the other leaders could have done that either. They have speech writers tell them what to say.

And Justin Trudeau called Peter Kent a piece of shit in the House of Commons, and he still has his job.

Just to clarify, you've already caused some pain, then?

Also, what kind of baiting is it that you're so violently averse to?  Because I didn't see the pain the first time and I'd like to see some now.

Justin Trudeau said that under his breath in his seat - not to Peter Kent directly.  It just happened to be picked up because the mic was still on.

And what Trudeau said about Kent was accurate, anyway.  Trudeau even got some praise from some BQ supporters and a poll showed that most people agreed Kent deserved it after his condescending put-down of Megan Leslie.

Thats true.

I don't think her performance was 100% ad lib though, as  indicated by the song she had prepared and set to play on her phone.

What I was suggesting though was that we are much more inclined to forgive someone that we like or netural to us over someone we strongly dislike or hate.

As some mentioned her speech was a shipwreck.

What kind of impact it will have on the Greens in the election, let's just say their opponents have been given some considerable ammunition.

Stockholm, you seem to have a personal dislike for Elizabeth May, but I'm not sure why.  Is she really any different than a lot of other politicians?  Having a big ego is pretty common in the political world, you know.  All the other party leaders think highly of themselves.  No one would describe Harper, Trudeau or Mulcair as having small egos.

And in the big picture, let's remember that it's Stephen Harper who is the one in power and causing all the damage in this country, not Elizabeth May.

This thread is demented. What a total non-event. I won't bother to watch her speech but I can't imagine it's any weirder than this whole conversation about it.

Not a bad idea. But spell it "Omar Kotter". Nice mélange to screw somebody's head.

Yeah, what ever happened to the good old days when the Press Gallery Dinner guests simply threw dinner rolls?

Sean in Ottawa

Her speech was not good but this is out of proportion. The idea that she will lose support for it is ridiculous.

There is nothing you can point at specifically that would lose her support. The most memorable quote is the throwaway at the end about Kadhr having more class than the entire cabinet. I suspect that comment will not have any effect but if it did it would be to help her.

Let's also be clear -- she is not running for PM and people like the bluntness from a person who will not be PM.

No harm done here and the people who are spinning that there has been will have other (maybe more credible) stuff to spin next week.

Nobody thinking of voting Green will be put off by anything we saw here.
