Quebec will have 78 seats next time.

Merci beaucoup David!

Not politically motivated but I just happen to be connected with another political party. Right.

My hope is that the Tories will siphon off enough votes from the Liberals to help the NDP win more seats.

Several media outlets are reporting that Bloc Québécois leader Mario Beaulieu will be running in the East Montreal riding of Pointe-de-l'Ile, currently held by the NDP's Eve Peclet.

Although he has not confirmed this, he would be only the second candidate announced. The first would be the former journalist Yvon Moreau in the riding of Abitibi-Témescamingue being announced this afternoon.

And on the topic of Quebec ridings, Mario Beaulieu has finally chosen his riding - La Pointe-de-l'Ille.

Please get your facts straight. As I just posted before you, he has not cofirmed. All that he has confirmed is that he has moved into the riding.

I doubt we lucky enough, but how great would it be if those two ended up as the only Bloc candiates.

1.  I posted at the same time as you, so I didn't see your post when I posted mine.

2.  Are you sure it isn't confirmed yet?  Journalist Philippe Orfali of Le Devoir seems to think so:

Mario Beaulieu sera candidat dans La Pointe-de-l’Île

Their official position is that they plan to run a full slate of 78 candidates in the province, but a source close to the party said they are having a lot of difficulty.

Le Bloc en mal de candidats [Le Devoir - 2015/01/22]

I have never voted Bloc, though there certainly are Bloc candidates for whom I'd have voted if I lived in their ridings. A lot of the Bloc candidates, and some of the MPs, were very progressive, with trade union and social movement backgrounds. They'd have been NDP in English Canada.

They have become a caricature of themselves, but no, I don't think it is necessarily "great" that they no longer really exist. They are certainly not the only party championing a minority nation in a federal or unitary central parliament.

Apologies. Your article (from Le Devoir) is saying it's not official but later in the article he says the riding association asked him and he accepted.
The English sources I have checked are not reporting on that second fact.

It's still not official and I would not hold my breath. If he does go for that riding, it's proabably because it's where he thinks he has the best chances of getting elected. Of the 18 ridings on the island of Montreal, it might in fact be his best chance, but I would not dismiss the possibility that Eve Peclet could get re-elected.

I predict the Bloc's campaign will probably only get 2-4 candidates elected, but none on the island of Montreal.

Yes, presumably Le Devoir has better local information and sources than the English media like Global News.  It appears Le Devoir has heard from the BQ riding association that the Mario Beaulieu candidacy will be going ahead in that riding.

If he wants to run in Montréal, it would make sense he would select one of the ridings that was a BQ stronghold even during the height of Chrétien's success in 2000.  La Pointe-de-l'Ille was one of only a handful of Montreal ridings that didn't go Liberal during the Chrétien years - the others being Duceppe's riding of Laurier, and others like Hochelaga and Rosemont.

lagatta

That was also Francine Lalonde's riding (right to die advocate). She was an exemplary MP.

I believe you mean Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie? Rosemont is a provincial riding. The federal riding is larger and includes most of Gouin (western) and Rosemont (eastern). That federal riding (mine) is now NDP with Alexandre Boulerice. Provincially the westernmost part (that is, more central) part is Québec solidaire in the Québec constituencies, and PQ in the more eastern part.

Quebec is going to be highly unpredictable.

Debater

Yes, I mean Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie. :)  I was just abbreviating it.  And sometimes they change over the years.  For example, Laurier-Sainte Marie has also gone by just Laurier in the past.

Yes, Francine Lalonde was well-respected across party lines.  She unfortunately passed away from cancer about a year ago.

lagatta

Debater, I know, but you abbreviated out my part of it. I don't live in Rosemont. (But then, I don't think Unionist lives in the former city of Outremont).

Debater

I'll be careful not to abbreviate out your part again. :)  Désolé.

Alice Funke just tweeted that the BQ has now officially nominated their first candidate, Yvon Moreau, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue:

No I don't - I live in Côte-des-Neiges. Riding of Outremont. Most of the former city of Outremont is unfortunately beyond my budget. Or fortunately.

lagatta

Yes, I thought you lived in CDN. I do have (younger) friends who used to live in Mile-End who actually found a cheaper apartment a few streets west in Outremont. Seems Mile-End has become so trendy that even rather rundown places go for a premium. Of course they have to walk east to buy groceries, as les 5 Saisons, except for a few choice loss-leaders, is horrifically expensive.

NorthReport

This sounds reasonable, as they won 59 seats in Quebec last election, and there are a few more seats now.

@Unionist...Is St Kevin's School still there?

lagatta

Glen, I don't see it on the Englsh Montreal School Board list, but remember that it's name may have changed. Quite a few of the "saint" schools, French and English, have been re-named for their neighbourhoods or famous daughters and sons thereof:

http://www.emsb.qc.ca/emsb_fr/pdf_fr/schools_fr/LISTE%20DES%20ECOLES%202...

The Catholic parish and church are still functioning. School boards here have become secular, as you probably know. A great victory!

Glenl

Thanks. I lived in Cote des Neiges for years, attended St Kevin's, got caught in a memory.

lagatta

Yes, I studied at Université de Montréal for many years (BA and MA, mostly part-time). Certainly remember the church, which is still open. If you remember the street (was it on an adjacent street, behind the church?) then it would be easier to find if the school is still open under a different name.

People from everywhere in the world live around there now. (I live in Petite-Italie, near JTM). Direct to CDN via the blue line!

No. It amalgamated with Coronation School about 15 years ago.

I'm wondering how and if the lack of internal democracy in the Bloc's "choice" of Duceppe can be used as a talking point. I'm thinking of this emerging from yet another Québec solidaire congrès where we discuss and vote on every point in our program...

In the other thread devoted to Duceppe, I was a bit horrified that I actually agreed with Mario Dumont about something!

socialdemocrati...

I think it will make itself a talking point. There are undoubtedly a few people inside the party who are saying "WTF? Him again? Realy?" Especially if he doesn't turn their fortunes around soon. You'll start hearing rumblings from other members of the Bloc that the changeover was handled poorly.

Robert Fife on CTV's QP just asked Duceppe how could he support the union-busting leader of the PQ?

montrealer58 montrealer58's picture

Well, Dumont was onto something when he said that the BQ leadership selection process would not be acceptable to the Parti Rhinoceros!

lagatta

What did Duceppe respond to Fife? Some crap about the "unity of independentists"?

I remember Duceppe organizing unions, but people do change...

Two phrases come to mind. From Pablo Bustinduy Amador, Podemos international spokesman at le Festival des solidarités this past Saturday:

"Un pays; plus jamais sans son peuple".

And an old one, from Michel Chartrand "Défendre la langue française, c'est aussi défendre ceux qui le parlent".

Martin Leclerc is an interesting candidate for the NDP in Montcalm (northeast of the Montréal region, and many parts of it function as bedroom suburb of Montréal and Laval - I hesitated on whether to put it in "Montréal ridings" here). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montcalm_%28electoral_district%29

Martin Leclerc is a sports reporter and analyst at Radio-Canada, and has also been president of the Journal de Montréal union. http://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/politique/politique-canadienne/201506/... He is also active in amateur sport in his region and has taken part in the Bécik jaune community program in Mascouche. http://becikjaune.ca/ And also very interested in defending and recovering funding for CBC-Radio-Canada.

I regret to have found nothing in English, even googling Martin Leclerc NDP.

Of course, all would have been forgiven if Duceppe had simply been a garden variety member of En Lutte, instead.

sherpa-finn

Noted, lagatta. It was my weak attempt at sectarian humour.

In the circles I traveled in those times, En Lutte was the ML faction of choice. Not sure if it was the Charles Gagnon connection. Or the fact that they were nationalists. Or just had a better newspaper. There were also a number of people involved in the whole SOS Garderie dynamic, as I recall.

As an Anglo-NDPer I was very much on the periphery and its all a bit of a blur, to be honest. But there was this girl...

Except maybe proof of Mao's awesomeness!

Isn't a politicized person being a Maoist a bit like a scientist being a Lamarckian?
