WestJet union drive facing June 16 deadline

Unionization drives have been ongoing by two "associations" seeking to represent WestJet pilots and flight attendants. I don't know if they're affiliated with anyone else. There are a total of 8,700 employees in the two groups.

But there's a kind of "deadline" on. Today, if 50%+1 of employees in a potential bargaining unit sign union cards, certification of the union is automatic. On June 16, Harper's new legislation applies, whereby a secret ballot vote will be required in every case. That obviously makes things tougher.

Especially when the employer is started to go insane with fear and loathing, and is issuing threats. That's not like the worker-customer-friendly WestJet, is it? But somehow, all these capitalists show the same colours when it comes to the risk that they may have to deal with workers collectively, rather than one on one.

Wishing the workers every success in concretizing their constitutional freedom of association and collective bargaining!

So, both groups missed the June 16 "deadline" for automatic card-check certification, but the pilots have now filed anyway - this will require a secret ballot:

Not sure what's up with the flight attendants, unless anyone else has current info.

I'm sorry, I don't see here what Trudeau thinks of all this?

The pilots start voting Wednesday:

I think the workers should be charged with racism or xenophobia for forcibly trying to change someone's culture, no?

While I understand that we consider corporations people, culture requires more than one person. I only hope that this union virus infects many more corporate persons thus actually changing its corporate culture.

"Experts say unionization could change corporate culture at freewheeling, low-cost airline"

Freewheeling and low-cost.  I'd suggest that it's been some time since either of those adjectives applied to Westjet.  It used to be true: cheaper and fun to fly.  But of late it reminds me more and more of Air Canada, and their famous (supposed) motto:  "We're not happy till you're not happy."  Am I wrong about this?

sorry for double post

The pilots voted no. The corporate culture is safe. Westjet officials hailed the result. They have a temporary reprieve.

The pilots have spoken, respect their rights and decision not to form a union.

Sorry, no. I don't recognize the "right" to face employers individually, any more than the "right" of individuals to secede from society. Unionization should be mandatory, while workers should have full rights, entrenched in law, to choose their union, to run their union, and so forth. Radical, I know. Please don't report me to Harper.

Why would I report you to Harper? Are you going to report me to Justin?

I think the workers have exercised their rights, they don't want to be part of a union. They prefer to interact with their employer as individuals and not part of some collective.

Gee, not everything has to be your way. Some people can think for themselves.

Some individuals would like to work more than 48 hours per week and earn lots of overtime. Others would accept less than minimum wage if they thought it could get them a job. Still others would sell themselves into slavery if it meant enough money. And still others cheat on their income tax, or hide their earnings in offshore tax havens.

They can all think for themselves. We just don't let them act on their anti-social thoughts.

Our society thankfully has banned these individual "rights", and many others. Nothing came easily. Every time a step forward was taken, some tycoon complained that individual rights were being trampled. Luckily, they're only 1%, and they don't actually do much for society.

We shall overcome.
