Wonderful audio documentary this morning on CBC Radio 1 "The Sunday Edition". Moving and thought-provoking. Please listen when you have 25 minutes to spare:

Quote:

Crown Metal Packaging is a highly profitable American multinational that makes cans for all the major beer companies. One of its plants, located just north of Toronto, was the site of a painful, protracted strike.

In September, 2013, 120 workers took to the picket line, after Crown demanded pay cuts from its workers and declared that new hires would receive 40 percent less than current employees.

The strike lasted 22 months and in the end, the union made no gains. In fact, anyone who wanted to return to work had no choice but to accept a significant pay cut.

Ashley Walters spent time with the strikers. Her documentary is called "More Powerful than God."

That "more powerful than God quip' appears at the end in the middle of a wrap-up by one of the strikers that I think is amazing.

Heard it this morning -- agreed, it is very powerful and a nice collection of conflicting thoughts on the situation.

Well, one thing isn't conflicted: Fuck Crown Metals.

That was a powerful and heartbreaking documentary. That description of the CEO driving by the workers and just staring straight through them as if they were nothing more than background visual noise.
