Nov 13 - attacks in Paris (updated)
lagatta

Horrors.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2015/nov/13/shootings-reported-in-...

These areas are "populaire" and multicultural, though there is some gentrification especially in the 11th (hard to avoid in Paris).

Remember the Tunisian attacks, just before the World Social Forum? This is just before the Climate summit - yes, a lot of hypocritical bigwigs, but also a host of social movements are in Paris now at alternative summits and events (Remember Québec 2001? But much bigger). Many people I know from different countries, north and south, are there now.

I'd call Le Bataclan more a concert venue than a nightclub, but of course there is also dancing and a bar.

I'm listening to it on Radio-Canada...

omg have to share this wth my daughter she fell in love with Paris when she went to France last year.

pookie

Yes my mistake, Bataclan is a large concert hall not a nightclub.  I start so few topics here I forgot to leave first post blank.  Can't edit.

Absolutely incredible.  Reports that attackers in the nightclub were/are "calmly shooting people".

quizzical

how do they know it was  Russian weapons already?

Hurtin Albertan

France has closed the borders, declared a state of emergency, French military is mobilizing into Paris, multiple coordinated attacks.

All I can say is I hope the casualties have been greatly exaggerated due to confusion, but I'm afraid it's going to be very bad.

Hurtin Albertan

quizzical - Kalashnikovs are pretty recognizable, although in fairness they were made in over a dozen or more countries over the years, they all look pretty much the same from a distance.

lagatta

Closing borders is certainly understandable to prevent more attacks and capture the guilty, but it is also a huge negative for peaceful environmentalist movements converging on Paris.

quizzical

hurtin albertan, oh ok, i had to look up what they were talking about.

maybe they want the activists to stay away if they're not there already.

Suspect arrested at concert hall told police: " I am from ISIS."

Appears that this is part of ISIL lashing out in response to recent battlefield setbacks. The bombing yesterday in Beirut and possibly the Russian plane have also taken place.

Bec.De.Corbin Bec.De.Corbin's picture

The attck in Paris is not a sponanous one on event. ISIS has been very busy planning attacks worldwide; first you have (possibly) a Russian airliner in Egypt blown up (requires planning and cordination), then dual suicide bombings in Beirut targeting Hezbollah and now multiple coordinated attacks (7 places according to police) in Paris France. They, the target nations or organizations, all have one thing in common: they are or have in the past attacked ISIS in Syria in one form or another.

I suspect this isn't over yet and we may have attacks elsewhere including here in the USA.

NDPP

Why in the USA? So we forget that it was USA that manufactured them in the first place?

Mr. Magoo

I suppose it will be up to them now whether they have some special gratitude to the USA for "manufacturing" them.

It's weird, you know. I remember Isis always kind of being second fiddle. When did she get all terrist on us? At least she's got some cool intel.

No, that is what you think.

A fist fight erupted in the basement at CIA headquaters Langley when the "find and Kill ISIS" guys bumped into the "control ISIS" guys at the water cooler in the company break area...

Security was called in...

ooops.........

Quote:
2:39 a.m. French police say they believe all of the attackers involved shootings and bombings in Paris are dead. Micheal Cadot, the head of Paris police said Saturday that while all of the attackers are believed to have died, authorities are searching for possible accomplices in the attacks that left over 120 people dead.

so they confessed then were shot?

Ken Burch

There's no reason to be surprised by that.  ISIS supporters in France are likely to be immigrants from Algeria, a former French colony.  A lot of people still speak French there.

It is also possible that the Paris police have Arab-speaking personnel, given the number of Arabs they would encounter in various capacities.

Or, they were shot, then confessed? The timelines are unclear.

Paladin1

I can't decide if this was harpers fault or if the US is responsible for attacking france and implicating ISIS.

no worries. they'll have the stories straight by tomorrow. they've already changed the claim it was a russian rifle to may have been, in the same exact news report. ;)

normally rational Canadians are freakishly freakin in racist splendor across the internet.

Bec.De.Corbin Bec.De.Corbin's picture

Korean news showed pictures (video still) of one of the attackers whom was captured alive and under arrest.

He appeared to be wounded and interestingly enough, he had some kind of wiring exposed under his torn shirt. He appeared to be light skinned and dark haired.

Suspect Arrested at #Paris Concert Hall Told Police: 'I am from ISIS'

http://isis.liveuamap.com/en/2015/14-november-suspect-arrested-at-paris-...

No surprise that msm lies - or that racists and Islamophobes forget ISIS kills mostly Muslims,  -   but can't help noticing again how few bother when the dead are Middle Easterners. ISIS machine gunned 200 Syrian children, blew up downtown Latakia and Beirut Lebanon days ago as well. Few here probably noticed.

Paris changed everything.

Now the refugee camp at Calais is burning.

Just watch what they do with this...

Kadyrov Calls For Muslims Worldwide To Unite To Defeat ISIS

http://rabble.ca/comment/1541143#comment-1541143

Either they finished him off afterwards or the quote was completely made up.

All the participants in the Charlie Hebdo - Hyper Casher etc attacks were French. They were born and raised in France.

And of course there are many Arabic speakers in French police forces. Mostly Maghrebi Arabic, though I imagine that some must speak standard modern Arabic (that is, what is heard on TV news) and could also communicate effectively with people from the Middle East.

Paris Attacks: 120+ Killed and Many Injured in a Series of Terrorist Attacks - Updates

The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attacks."

A Paris Horror Prevails Today: Our Tomorrow Demands Caution

http://nsnbc.me/2015/11/14/a-paris-horror-prevails-today-our-tomorrow-de...

"With French sentiment already tipping toward expelling foreigners, and with fears of Syrian refugees growing here in Germany, this horrendous tragedy bears the signs of a much bigger potential tragedy.

A story is playing out that feels like a prelude to something..."

josh

Cold comfort coming from Assad.

Unionist

Imagine if this had happened before October 19.

NDPP

I am thinking this recent spate of ISIS atrocities could now be used  to manufacture consent for a full scale invasion of Syria. France was due to send an aircraft carrier there anyway - a controversial move - to 'fight' these vermin the West themselves created in a failed attempt to destroy Syria and topple the regime. I hope I'm wrong.

Unionist

Hearing Hollande talk about "war" today, I had the same thought. I hope I'm wrong too.

KenS

ISIS perfecting "sustained terrorism," where as well as the immediate goals you make sure that the conditions that support your institutional infrastructure are maintained.

The tide in the West was beginning to turn against active intervention. ISIS doesn't want that. More intervention feeds their machine- and at no risk, since no Western intervantion can uproot them.

They have way outdone 'old time terrorists,' and even outdone Al Quaeda, who invented sustained institutionalised terrorism.

They have a state to work from. What kind of state? Doesn't matter, they control territory and can take in and put to use anyone who comes to them.

So they stir the pot in France- where the reaction against Muslims is inevitable. French citizens already make up a disproportionate number of international ISIS cadre. Now they'll get even more of them for some time to come.
