Anonymous Vows Revenge (and vid)

http://www.rt.com/news/310227-anonymous-canada-police-shooting/

"Anonymous group hactivists are mounting a campaign to avenge a man 'in a Guy Fawkes mask' shot dead by Canadian police in British Columbia on Thursday after being mistaken for a suspect. Cyber-attacks have already hit national police websites.

'This RCMP officer must be named, fired and charged for the murder of our brother. If we do not receive justice, rest assured there will be revenge. We call upon our fellow Anons in Canad to take to the streets to protest at the RCMP headquarters...until our demands for justice are met - We call upon the global collective of Anonymous to remove the RCMP cyber infra structure from the internet."

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

The Public Safety Minister, Stephen Blaney, who would put a fascist Gauleiter to shame, made a public statement today in regard to the gunning down of a protestor by police in Prince George. Before the so-called "Independent" Investigations Office (IIO) has been able to establish any facts and make them public, the Minister is dancing on the victim's grave, defecating on his family, shitting on his friends. But what can you expect from this barbaric regime?

Quote:
“The minister’s comments in relation to the Dawson Creek shooting are simply shocking,” Micheal Vonn, policy director for the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, told Ricochet by email. “Nothing has been established in relation to this shooting, and no one is able to prejudge the outcome of the IIO’s investigation.”

“What is the family of the person who was shot to make of the minister’s attempt to somehow tie this tragic event to international jihadi terrorism? It’s simply outrageous.”

But Conservatives don't care about rights and seem to be happy to see Canadians, as in US cities, gunned down by the police. Especially if they somehow, even as spuriously and maliciously as the Minister has done, connect violence with "Muslim radicals" and thereby justify more violence, overseas, on the brown and other people of colour this regime hates so much.

Cowboys and Indians keep gaining powerful allies in Site C Dam battle

Battle lines are being drawn and sides taken in what is shaping up to be an epic fight over the the $9 Billion proposed Site C Dam.

On one side is the “Cowboy and Indian” alliance, which continues gathering strength against the project, said chiefs and landowners at a recent press conference in Vancouver. The Peace Valley leaders were in town for a federal court hearing on their legal challenge of the highly controversial Site C.

Heavy hitters line up against Site C

While the alliance has suffered some recent setbacks, it continues picking up big backers. Early in July, the Metro Vancouver board overwhelmingly voted to call on Christy Clark to institute a two year moratorium on the project, given the lack of business case, demonstration of need, and consideration of vast impacts on prime agricultural land. The First Nations’ Leadership Council – which represents all three major Aboriginal leadership groups in BC – has also come out swinging for Treaty 8 and its allies, calling for a halt to planned construction while various court cases are in progress. “The provincial government seems to have tunnel vision when it comes to building this project. Pushing ahead with construction activities at this time is premature and dishonourable,” said Robert Phillips of the First Nations Summit political executive.

“All citizens of BC should be deeply concerned; by denying the Treaty 8 First Nations their day in court, the government is making an outright statement that they are above democratic rights and the judicial system.”

Meanwhile, the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union added their hefty support to the First Nations and landowners’ battle against Site C this week.....

UBCM calls for delay in Site C construction as clearcutting set to begin

The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) passed several resolutions at its annual gathering this week calling on BC Hydro and the BC government to stand down on construction of the controversial $9 Billion Site C Dam, pending more review and consultation regarding the impacts of the project.

“We are very happy to hear that that the UBCM will be calling for work on Site C to stop until there’s a proper review by the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) and the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC),” said Joe Foy, National Campaign Director with the Wilderness Committee....

Site C not needed until at least 2029, BC Hydro’s own numbers show

The figures underscore the finding by the Joint Review Panel into the project that the need for the power has not been demonstrated. Ironically, the BCUC, which is reviewing Hydro’s latest Rate Design proposal and is responsible for evaluating projects based on need and business case, was barred by the Liberal government from examining Site C.

Dam will leak dollars

To make matters worse, the power generated by the $9 Billion-plus project would have to be sold to neighbouring markets at a steep discount (something like ($35/Megawatt Hour vs. $100-plus to produce it), which will mean billions in losses to ratepayers and taxpayers. One leading energy expert – Dan Potts, retired head of the Association of Major Power Users’ of BC – predicts a $350 million annual loss to ratepayers from the unnecessary Site C.....

Opinion: Why Site C must be stopped

quote:

It’s time to start using the F-word. The F word is food.

The east-west-running Peace River valley with its deep alluvial soils particularly suited to vegetable production has the only Class 1 climate north of Prince George. Because of this, it can produce almost all the crops grown in the Fraser Valley with higher productivity (yields) due to its longer daylight.

B.C. is food-deficient in vegetables; we currently supply only 43 per cent of the B.C. market for fresh vegetables that can be grown in this province.

The alluvial soils to be flooded to produce overpriced power for the Site C dam are capable of producing sufficient fresh vegetables to provide the nutritional needs of a million people. Forever.

CBC’s The Current recently ran a series on the link between poverty and health. Seems poverty is a whopping 50 per cent determinant of health outcomes; the quality of medical care is a mere 25 per cent. An important part of the reason is nutrition: when families don’t have enough income to put nutrition on the table, health suffers. And the most important years are childhood.

Already, people in the northern regions of our province pay four times what the rest of us do for their food supply. Already, B.C. has the highest rate of child poverty in Canada. Only fruits and vegetables are fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are the irreplaceable building blocks of nutrition. The Peace River Valley is the only area for large-scale vegetable expansion in the province....

NDP Leader Horgan’s Site C Dam opposition is a game-changer

quote:

Changing the game

This announcement, at least at first blush, is a game changer. Mr. Horgan is no longer tied to the apron strings of Christy and her LNG fantasies. This is extremely timely given the news over the last 30 days or so which all but set the funeral date for LNG and gazillion-dollar Prosperity Funds and debt elimination in this province. Christy can hardly, at this point, announce that she will cancel Site C too, and since that decision will be hugely popular as the facts come out, she is stuck flogging a dying horse, if not one that’s already been put down.

This decision will also give Horgan an issue where he is once again the Leader of the Opposition, not simply saying “me too” to LNG propositions put forward by Christy and her poodle, Rich Coleman – the beat cop who, like Walter Mitty, fantasizes that he’s become a world expert on energy.

The election campaign is underway and at this point, admittedly early in the game, I would say it’s suddenly advantage Horgan.

I guess that the BC NDP's support for fracking the province is just not enough for you. As the planet warms we are hell bent on destroying most of our precious fresh water supplies in the north and Site C will flood an area that can help feed our province in the coming decades.

Tell me again what the BC NDP is supposed to stand for? Is it really only a vehicle for the desires of Operating Engineers members?

Just to remind you that at the recent BC NDP convention, "I support Site C" buttons were visible.

As for how BCers think... just look at 2 separate opinion polls:

1. July - Abacus Data:

Support: 59%

Opposed: 17%

2. November - NRG Research:

Support: 67%

Opposed: 18%

I know some may quibble with the sources... but the spread in those those numbers are still overwhelming from a political perspective.

Let me remind those here that the Manitoba NDP gov't is also embarking on a similar... but even much more MASSIVE dam-building exercise with Manitoba Hydro. Yes, farmland and other sensitive areas in MB will also be flooded as a result. In any event, ever wonder why the MB NDP has won 4 successive elections, while the BC NDP remains in the political wilderness?

Again, the MB NDP are akin to "orange" Liberals and are a big-tent party and understand that new hydro-electric dams represent green energy and are the cheapest source of "firm" energy over their 100-year life-cycle.

It is also important to remember the political impact of Adrian Dix's "Kinder Morgan Surprise" in the midst of the 2013 BC election campaign. That was an oil pipeline fer chrise sakes. Impact upon climate change. Even then, it was the turning point in the campaign (according to all parties), which resulted in the 2013 devastating loss. Never forget.

NorthReport

The NDP both provincially and federally are rank amateurs playing in a professional arena and it shows. Both Hogan and Mulcair are at least 20 years too old, and more importantly neither one projects one ounce of hope for the voters. Don't waste your energy on either party as with these leaders they are both dead in the water.

Why do you think Christy Clark work a hard hat throughout the 2013 election campaign? The BC NDP, the Party of "No Jobs" still doesn't get it.

And federally, let's face it, the NDP good showing in 2011 had everything to do with Jack Layton, and very little to do with anyone else including Lavigne, McGrath & Mulcair. The 2015 election drove that point home loud and clear.

B.C. premier plays wedge politics with Site C dam

JUSTINE HUNTER

VICTORIA — The Globe and Mail

Published Sunday, Oct. 04, 2015

When the B.C. New Democratic Party caucus met over the summer, it faced a divisive resource debate that culminated with at least one MLA threatening to quit.

The topic was the $8.8-billion Site C dam. The New Democrats under the leadership of John Horgan want to rebrand themselves as a job creation party. By supporting Site C, the largest public infrastructure project in the province’s history, the NDP would have had a chance to win back the support of the building trade unions that abandoned them in the 2013 provincial election.

Mr. Horgan, as he prepared to take over the leadership of the party in the spring of 2014, was aware of the possibility of being boxed in, again, by the B.C. Liberals, who successfully framed the NDP over its opposition to the Kinder Morgan TransMountain pipeline proposal during the last campaign.

But on Site C, the environmental wing of the caucus would have none of it. Lana Popham, the NDP’s agriculture critic, spent part of her summer paddling the Peace River in solidarity with opponents of the project. When it is complete, the dam will flood more than 4,000 hectares of once-protected farmland. Sources say she made it clear she would quit the caucus rather than vote in favour of the project. She wasn’t alone.

Other influential voices including George Heyman and David Eby stood with her in arguing against the project. The critics of Site C won the debate but the NDP did not take a public stand on the project until last week, when the B.C. Liberal government forced it off the fence by tabling a resolution in the legislature that required MLAs to vote yea or nay.

But on projects such as Site C, the die is already cast. And come election time, Ms. Clark will be standing at the dam site in her favourite hard hat to remind voters of the opposition’s opposition to jobs.

..from this link. disgusting. this is what your supporting northreport?

On Wednesday, the province and BC Hydro announced that Peace River Hydro Partners—which includes Petrowest, made up of nine amalgamated firms, including a Fort St. John company—would take on the main civil works project.

On Wednesday, the BC Building Trades group called the move “a bad decision for B.C. and for B.C. workers.”

The group said it is disappointed in the decision to go with a consortium, as it does not include any of its affiliates or workers.

Tom Sigurdson, the group’s executive director, said that BCBT affiliates offered diversity and apprenticeship opportunities that will not be brought to Site C.

“Skilled and experienced B.C. dam builders will be sitting idle while BC Hydro builds Site C with less experienced workers, many from outside BC and, we expect, many from offshore,” he said.

“This is not acceptable to our 39,000 members and we wonder if it is acceptable to Premier Clark and Ministers Bennett and Bond?”

The province said the Construction Maintenance and Allied Workers and the Christian Labour Association of Canada will represent unionized workers on-site.

BC Building Trades represents about 13 trade unions in B.C. and the Yukon. It filed a civil suit in March against BC Hydro for terms within its request for proposals that would have prevented union members from going on strike during construction of the dam or recruit other non-union members into unions.

NorthReport

Site C construction has alrerady begun.  This is not a coal mine, it is water, a renewable resource. If you wish to win you have to pick your battles, and this is not one of them. It's done. And BC NDP's approach to Site C is a surefire way for the Party of "No" to lose the next election.

..it's not a done deal no matter how many times you repeat that. we can choose to loose what has been invested for the sake of saving the multi billions it will cost to build. for the sake of saving the farmlands that can feed a million people. and there is a similarity to coal when it is used to support the fracking industry.

Requiring over 700 chemicals, many of them highly toxic if not carcinogenic, fracking releases 30 percent more methane than conventional methods of extraction. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with 105 times more warming impact than carbon dioxide.

BC Hydro orders protesters off land slated for logging near Site C dam

The Crown corporation gave protesters 24 hours to leave the area known as Rocky Mountain Fort, on the south bank of the Peace River, just a few kilometres south of Fort St. John.

It warned that BC Hydro personnel will remove all contents of the camp and deliver it to RCMP but such action had not been taken by Monday afternoon.

Verena Hofmann, a Peace River Valley resident who was at the encampment over the weekend, said contractors appear ready to begin logging a three-kilometre region that is First Nations territory.

"We've just heard that equipment has started up. It looks like they are intending to keep on cutting," she said on the phone from Fort St. John. "Treaty 8 First Nation people are holding their ground and are not moving from the site, so things are intensifying and changing quickly."

Hofmann said demonstrators believe BC Hydro has no right to force them off the land in the midst of ongoing legal challenges involving Site C.

A day after three people were arrested for blocking traffic at worksite entrances on the project's north bank, Phillip wrote the UBCIC is "deeply concerned that BC Hydro's actions are increasing tensions on the ground."

"Yesterday, BC Hydro moved equipment in toward the camp, despite publicly saying they are speaking with Site C dam protesters and local authorities to try to peacefully end the standoff," Phillip said in the release.

"Further provocations on the part of BC Hydro will only serve to escalate tensions in an already volatile situation." Phillip could not immediately be reached for follow up comment....

B.C. Taxpayers Paid Millions for the Prime Farmland BC Hydro Will Flood with Site C Dam

quote:

Peace Valley farmers say BC Hydro’s ownership of some of the valley’s best farmland, coupled with a 1957 flood reserve, has discouraged local farmers from growing much more than hay, wheat, canola and forage crops, which require far fewer investments than fruit and vegetable production, even though the valley has among the province’s most fertile soils, capable of growing a wide array of produce.

Ross Peck, a Peace Valley farmer who raises horses and grows wheat and canola on land that will be flooded by Site C, says farmers have been discouraged from spending money on irrigation or equipment that would allow them to diversify agricultural production.

“We’ve been in a holding pattern with our properties, not wanting to put much in the way of investment into them,” says Peck.

As a result, the Joint Review Panel that examined Site C’s impacts concluded that the valley’s contribution to B.C. agriculture was negligible and that only $22 million worth of crops would be lost during the predicted 100-year lifespan of Site C.
