Cowboys and Indians keep gaining powerful allies in Site C Dam battle
Battle lines are being drawn and sides taken in what is shaping up to be an epic fight over the the $9 Billion proposed Site C Dam.
On one side is the “Cowboy and Indian” alliance, which continues gathering strength against the project, said chiefs and landowners at a recent press conference in Vancouver. The Peace Valley leaders were in town for a federal court hearing on their legal challenge of the highly controversial Site C.
Heavy hitters line up against Site C
While the alliance has suffered some recent setbacks, it continues picking up big backers. Early in July, the Metro Vancouver board overwhelmingly voted to call on Christy Clark to institute a two year moratorium on the project, given the lack of business case, demonstration of need, and consideration of vast impacts on prime agricultural land. The First Nations’ Leadership Council – which represents all three major Aboriginal leadership groups in BC – has also come out swinging for Treaty 8 and its allies, calling for a halt to planned construction while various court cases are in progress. “The provincial government seems to have tunnel vision when it comes to building this project. Pushing ahead with construction activities at this time is premature and dishonourable,” said Robert Phillips of the First Nations Summit political executive.
“All citizens of BC should be deeply concerned; by denying the Treaty 8 First Nations their day in court, the government is making an outright statement that they are above democratic rights and the judicial system.”
Meanwhile, the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union added their hefty support to the First Nations and landowners’ battle against Site C this week.....

To make matters worse, the power generated by the $9 Billion-plus project would have to be sold to neighbouring markets at a steep discount (something like ($35/Megawatt Hour vs. $100-plus to produce it), which will mean billions in losses to ratepayers and taxpayers. One leading energy expert – Dan Potts, retired head of the Association of Major Power Users’ of BC – predicts a $350 million annual loss to ratepayers from the unnecessary Site C.....

The Peace River Valley is the only area for large-scale vegetable expansion in the province....

What is remarkable to me is that there is no internationalist challenge to this destruction of food potential, and that the Indigenous Peoples threatened have not yet considered? a challenge both under the ILO and the OAS Human Rights Tribunal, which monitors the rights of Peoples to fresh water, food and protection of their land...
just recently my friends here placed a challenge through the Commission to an oil processing plant...the Commissioner arrived, next day the plant was shut down.....likewise we are challenging the right of the Russians and Canadians to nickel mine to death one of the most abundant prolific food growing areas of the planet...already the multibillion dollar Russian plant is preparing a shut down!

Both Hogan and Mulcair are at least 20 years too old, and more importantly neither one projects one ounce of hope for the voters. When the B.C. New Democratic Party caucus met over the summer, it faced a divisive resource debate that culminated with at least one MLA threatening to quit.
The topic was the $8.8-billion Site C dam. The New Democrats under the leadership of John Horgan want to rebrand themselves as a job creation party. By supporting Site C, the largest public infrastructure project in the province’s history, the NDP would have had a chance to win back the support of the building trade unions that abandoned them in the 2013 provincial election.
Mr. Horgan, as he prepared to take over the leadership of the party in the spring of 2014, was aware of the possibility of being boxed in, again, by the B.C. Liberals, who successfully framed the NDP over its opposition to the Kinder Morgan TransMountain pipeline proposal during the last campaign.
But on Site C, the environmental wing of the caucus would have none of it. Lana Popham, the NDP’s agriculture critic, spent part of her summer paddling the Peace River in solidarity with opponents of the project. When it is complete, the dam will flood more than 4,000 hectares of once-protected farmland. Sources say she made it clear she would quit the caucus rather than vote in favour of the project. She wasn’t alone.
Other influential voices including George Heyman and David Eby stood with her in arguing against the project. The critics of Site C won the debate but the NDP did not take a public stand on the project until last week, when the B.C. Liberal government forced it off the fence by tabling a resolution in the legislature that required MLAs to vote yea or nay.
But on projects such as Site C, the die is already cast. And come election time, Ms. Clark will be standing at the dam site in her favourite hard hat to remind voters of the opposition’s opposition to jobs.

On Wednesday, the province and BC Hydro announced that Peace River Hydro Partners—which includes Petrowest, made up of nine amalgamated firms, including a Fort St. John company—would take on the main civil works project.
On Wednesday, the BC Building Trades group called the move “a bad decision for B.C. and for B.C. workers.”
The group said it is disappointed in the decision to go with a consortium, as it does not include any of its affiliates or workers.
Tom Sigurdson, the group’s executive director, said that BCBT affiliates offered diversity and apprenticeship opportunities that will not be brought to Site C.
“Skilled and experienced B.C. dam builders will be sitting idle while BC Hydro builds Site C with less experienced workers, many from outside BC and, we expect, many from offshore,” he said.
“This is not acceptable to our 39,000 members and we wonder if it is acceptable to Premier Clark and Ministers Bennett and Bond?”
The province said the Construction Maintenance and Allied Workers and the Christian Labour Association of Canada will represent unionized workers on-site.
BC Building Trades represents about 13 trade unions in B.C. and the Yukon. It filed a civil suit in March against BC Hydro for terms within its request for proposals that would have prevented union members from going on strike during construction of the dam or recruit other non-union members into unions.

Requiring over 700 chemicals, many of them highly toxic if not carcinogenic, fracking releases 30 percent more methane than conventional methods of extraction. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with 105 times more warming impact than carbon dioxide.

Historic fur trade fort gets new life as Site C protest camp
A fort where explorers Alexander MacKenzie and David Thompson took refuge is shaping up to be another flashpoint in the fight over the Site C dam.
Opponents of the project have set up a camp at the site of the Rocky Mountain Fort, a provisioning post and the earliest European settlement in mainland B.C.
While BC Hydro has said it will remove any significant artifacts from the fort, the site itself is set to disappear beneath the dam's 83-kilometre reservoir....

- Brazil’s Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has found the Brazilian federal government and the Norte Energia company guilty of ethnocide for the social and cultural destruction wrought on seven indigenous groups during the Belo Monte dam’s construction.
- The MPF is demanding the courts set up an external commission to prevent future harm, even as the Brazilian government is granted an operational licence for the dam, whose reservoirs are now filling.
- The MPF report states: “What is happening with the Belo Monte dam is a process of ethnic extermination by which the federal government is continuing with the colonial practice of integrating Indians into the hegemonic society”.

BC Hydro orders protesters off land slated for logging near Site C dam

Arthur Hadland, the former regional district director and a vocal opponent of the Site C dam, was arrested for mischief during a protest Wednesday morning at the 269 Road entrance to the dam’s construction site.
Hadland was the first to stand in front of construction vehicles attempting to enter and leave the site. He was soon joined by a handful of others who banded together to blockade traffic at the site, while a second protest formed at the Old Fort Road site entrance....

Grand chief to BC Hydro: 'back off'
Saying the utility was "reckless" and escalating tensions, Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs Grand Chief Stewart Phillip called on BC Hydro to "back off" a First Nations encampment near Site C dam construction Friday.
On Friday, the UBCIC issued a release supporting a small group of campers living on the south bank of the Peace River at Rocky Mountain Fort, an 18th-century fur trade post that will be inundated beneath the $8.8 billion project's reservoir.
A day after three people were arrested for blocking traffic at worksite entrances on the project's north bank, Phillip wrote the UBCIC is "deeply concerned that BC Hydro's actions are increasing tensions on the ground."
"Yesterday, BC Hydro moved equipment in toward the camp, despite publicly saying they are speaking with Site C dam protesters and local authorities to try to peacefully end the standoff," Phillip said in the release.
"Further provocations on the part of BC Hydro will only serve to escalate tensions in an already volatile situation." Phillip could not immediately be reached for follow up comment....

B.C. Taxpayers Paid Millions for the Prime Farmland BC Hydro Will Flood with Site C Dam

Peace Valley farmers say BC Hydro’s ownership of some of the valley’s best farmland, coupled with a 1957 flood reserve, has discouraged local farmers from growing much more than hay, wheat, canola and forage crops, which require far fewer investments than fruit and vegetable production, even though the valley has among the province’s most fertile soils, capable of growing a wide array of produce.
Ross Peck, a Peace Valley farmer who raises horses and grows wheat and canola on land that will be flooded by Site C, says farmers have been discouraged from spending money on irrigation or equipment that would allow them to diversify agricultural production.
“We’ve been in a holding pattern with our properties, not wanting to put much in the way of investment into them,” says Peck.
As a result, the Joint Review Panel that examined Site C’s impacts concluded that the valley’s contribution to B.C. agriculture was negligible and that only $22 million worth of crops would be lost during the predicted 100-year lifespan of Site C.

New transmission line 'chasing customers for Site C,' Hydro critic charges
Former opposition leader Adrian Dix says a trio of power lines, including a recently-completed project near Dawson Creek, are examples of BC Hydro "chasing customers" for the Site C dam.
Premier Christy Clark, BC Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald and Energy Minister Bill Bennett hailed the completion of the Dawson Creek and Chetwynd Area Transmission line (DCAT) at a forum on natural resources in Prince George Wednesday.
But Dix — the premier-apparent before the BC NDP's disastrous 2013 election finish who now serves as the party's energy critic — says the project and others like it are "effectively subsidies" for industry....

BC Hydro files notice of civil claim against Site C protesters
BC Hydro is seeking an injunction and has filed a noticed of civil claim against protesters occupying the Rocky Mountain Fort camp.
The injunction was filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver yesterday, against Ken Boon, Arlene Boon, Verena Hofmann, Esther Pedersen (also known as Rachel Blatt), Helen Knott, Yvonne Tupper, Jane Doe, and John Doe — as well as ‘all other persons unknown to the plaintiff’ who are interfering with the area.
The claim states the defendants constructed a camp at the Rocky Mountain Fort in November 2015, alleging they didn’t have permission from the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to do so. The camp is located on crown land....

i've heard some hunters from the area are going to join in the action protesting the loss of habitat. i don't know for sure if it's true but if the protests can expand.
watched a show last week on how hydro electric dams being mainly on the northern hemisphere have caused the planet to tip slightly and shortened the days.
when is there going to be 1 dam too many and we flip on the axis completely?
