(If a mod could correct the spelling of Sanders name in the title it would be appreciated and thank you.)

Sanders if he were to secure the Democratic nomination this year might want to consider asking Beyonce to be his Vice-Presidential running mate.

Since you have arrived at this site I doubt if anyone has not gotten what your main message is. Thanks though for stating it so clearly. The only thing you forgot to say is that you are a longtime NDP supporter who has seen the light.

If Bernie Sanders shows that he has a chance then I think it's very likely that Elizabeth Warren will endorse him and then become the obvious choice for his running mate. At the moment Elizabeth is not certain that he can do it so she sits back. That also tells us something about Bernie's chances. She doesn't want to destroy her carreer by coming out too soon to support a loser. And what a loser he will be if the Clinton machine can stop him. He'll go down in history in that country as being the communist threat that was knocking at the door and who almost got in to destroy America, blah, blah, blah.

Now here's the messge that NDP supporters should pick up from that: If Eliziabeth jumps in prematurely then she will go down in flames with Bernie. She will be a part of the communist wicked threat that came so close to destroying everything that American stands for. And nearly all hope for what Elizabeth and Bernie stand for will disolved into nothingness.

She will guage it carefully, and if she doesn't come out as a winner then she will live to fight another day.

The alternative is when you go for the whole birthday cake and end up with nothing!

I assume that translates to something like "watering hole".  My father, when I was young, often referred to Pierre as "Peter Watering-hole".

If Sanders gets the nod, that'd be pretty historic.  But if he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by choosing a celebrity with no experience to speak of at any level of government then that would be legendary.

Obviously, but not a good choice for at least conventional reasons (he needs someone from a different region, possibly Latino). Much as I would like to see a Sanders/Warren ticket I doubt that that's who he would choose. He needs her in the Senate as well.

Indeed it would a colossal mistake, worse than electing Mulcair to lead the NDP.

I'm glad to see Beyonce has came around from her anti-gun stance in 2012 to wearing bullets as accessories in 2016.

Oh come on, nobody is seriously suggesting someone who has been (until this video) an apolitical pop artist promoting nothing but conspicuous consumption as a Vice-Presidential candidate. But perhaps it does mean that positive factors might be a) a younger person b) a person of colour and c) a woman.

Mary Carey placed 10th out of 135 candidates running for governor. Beyonce for Vice president isn't that hard to picture.

lagatta

Do you mean Mariah Carey? I have zero knowledge of pop culture, but have heard of her.

Beyoncé just barely squeaks by as old enough - she'll be 35 in September.

Now, hot sauce makes sense as a "Black thing" - that is certainly the case in the Caribbean and in many African countries (from the consumption among participants in seminars I've facilitiated abroad) in the latter case Southeast Asians were worthy rivals. And it certainy makes sense in Louisiana. But I'd always thought of Red Lobster as something very corporate, bland and white. I guess that in parts of the US they have a policy of having restaurants in places where many Black people live, and welcoming them as human beings? If anyone is familiar with the backstory please fill me in.

I'm craving some Antillais food from a new BYOW "Cuisine antillaise" restaurant that opened around the corner from me - they are from Haiti like so many people here and basically do Haitian and Antilles françaises foods, but with some popular inputs from the British and Hispanic islands. It is like -20 right now and I'd love that, but I'll have to wait to have a little more cash.

Oh, I'm not suffering, I'm eating a tortilla (Spanish omelette with potato and greens) and yes, I have some very nice hot sauce for it.

Beyonce and the Politics of Cultural Dominance

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/02/11/beyonce-and-the-politics-of-cultu...

"...I cannot for the life of me understand how Beyonce's commodified caricature of black opposition was in any way progressive. Instead what I saw was the cultural power of neoliberal capitalism to coopt opposition, monetize it and promote some mindless entertainment all at the same time.

I didn't see opposition. I saw the imagery and symbols of authentic black radicalism transformed into a de-politicized spectacle by gyrating, light-skinned-booty-short-clad sisters.

In this period of media-driven, pseudo-opposition in the form of Ta-Nehisi Coates, Beyonce, or even Bernie Sanders, it is increasingly difficult to make the distinction between image and reality, especially when the production of images and symbols is controlled by dominant forces with an interest in keeping us all stupid..."

As Tel Aviv Prepares to Welcome Beyonce, Here's a review of Israel's Atrocious Record Towards Black People

http://mondoweiss.net/2016/02/as-tel-aviv-prepares-to-welcome-beyonce-he...

"Days after her Super-Bowl half-time appearance, Israeli outlet Yedioth Ahronoth has confirmed rumor that Beyonce Knowles will perform two dates in Tel Aviv, Israel this August, which would be in violation of the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions..."

lagatta

Actually, opinions on "Formation" are divided, among serious African-American thinkers. Some see it as positive that a formerly rather vapid pop star took on serious issues facing African-Americans. And it certainly isn't her fault that she is light-skinned: she is triracial. What is wrong is the shortage of dark-skinned stars, especially among women. We won't get into everything else that is wrong with commercial pop culture...

Here's another reason for Toronto to be ashamed of ourselves.

Toronto councillor stops short of calling for Beyoncé ban in Canada

Karygiannis is in great need of a sense of humour. And a brain. But that's for another thread, or not.

Quote:

Ward 39 councillor Jim Karygiannis has called on the federal government to investigate the pop diva following her recent Super Bowl 50 halftime performance, which critics dubbed pro-Black Panther and anti-cop.

While Karygiannis wouldn’t ban Beyoncé based on the performance alone, he said if an inquiry found she or her backup dancers had supported the Black Panthers financially they could be blocked from entering the country.

lagatta

They didn't exist when she was of age. Perhaps not even when she was born. And the Afros and other things the young women are wearing in the video were Black Pride in general, not necessarily Black Panther. The Panthers did work the bérets, but lots of people wore them back then.

There is no reason for "Toronto", or Greek Torontonians, to be ashamed. That guy is a racist cretin.

kropotkin1951

Then there is the SNL take on the show. Who knew Beyonce is black.

Mr. Magoo

To all the naysayers:  Walter Mondale, Vice President during the Carter administration, also had no political experience, no public service credentials and no real interest in the office of VP, and was chosen solely because he also put on a very edgy Superbowl halftime show.

kropotkin1951

Please Maggo if you are going to post some sort of ridiculous satire at least label it as such.

Mr. Magoo

Did anyone really need a label to know that my post in #40 wasn't real?

But folks, please.  A pop musician who hasn't indicated any interest in running for any office -- nevermind Vice President -- and whose political experience to date consists of having performed a musical halftime show that some consider to be political is the obvious running-mate choice for Bernie Sanders?

One could easily make the case that this whole thread has been ridiculous satire.

NorthReport

Thanks Maysie.

Although supportive of Sanders, yea, another white male, for the US Presidency, there are some concerns about not supporting a woman, about not supporting a person of colour, and was part of the reason for starting this thread. I sincerely hope that Sanders, if he does win the Democratic nomination, which obviously is a very long shot, chooses a progressive black lesbian or bisexual female running mate. It's overdue. And with Sanders' age, as he would be 75 on inauguration day, there is indeed a reasonable chance that the VP would end becoming President.

Mr. Magoo

You're the one floating the idea of Beyonce.  Is she lesbian, to the best of your knowledge?

Quote:

Is that a good reason to propose someone the electorate probably isn't even slightly ready for?  Why stop there?  Why not a black, female, lesbian, convicted felon and supporter of Al-Qaeda?

I'd had the sense that you kind of wanted Sanders to win, but then you say silliness like this.

swallow swallow's picture

It's clearly a thread about Beyonce, not about the vice-presidency.

J. Edgar Karygiannis is a complete ass, for sure. It's interesting, though. Plenty of former Black Panthers have entered Canada. But outfits that evoke their memory and bother the likes of Karygiannis while he's watching the Super Bowl in his sanctum of privilege, well, that goes beyond the pale, it seems. Not afraid of Angela Davies, he's very much afraid of Beyonce.

Mr. Magoo

I'm looking at the thread title and the OP.  In what way are either "clearly" "not" about the Vice-Presidency?

Indeed, reminding police not to kill unarmed Black people is scarcely anti-police. It isn't as if she was chanting "Kill the pigs".

And Beyoncé, of course, is "Black" due to the infamous "one-drop-rule" meaning anyone with (recent) African ancestry is somehow tainted, in the eyes of white-supremacist ijuts. She is also a descendant of Beausoleil Brossard! (or Broussard, spelling variation).
