Well, let's put it this way. Obama announced his support for marriage equality in May 2012, and managed to win the next election with only a slightly reduced majority. Not that most of his supporters were neccesaarily voting FOR marriage equality, just that they obviously weren't voting AGAINST it.

Before Svend became the first openly gay MP by announcing the obvious many of his advisers said it would cost him votes and they needed his voice so don't take the chance. The next election he increased his winning margin because people like politicians who are willing to stand for what they believe in even if it is not the majority view.

I remember when that happened very well. Later that week, I saw some old Tommy Douglas campaign signs tossed into someone's garbage can(in Edmonton). Obviously, he'd been hanging onto them since at least the late 60s, and just coincidentally chose that week to toss them out.

But I agree, it didn't hurt Svend or the NDP very much at all, in the big picture.

If Sanders were by some miracle to win the Democratic nomination, choosing who his VP running mate would be, would become a huge issue in the presidential election because of his age.

VoD that is very true.

It isn't as bad as Tommy Douglas who during his time in politics believed homosexuality, even though decriminalized, should be “recognized for what it is — a mental illness, a psychiatric condition, which ought to be treated sympathetically by psychiatrists and social workers?”‘ Of course that was not his view at the end of his career.

Your objection is valid and its like my objection, as an advocate for people with disabilities, to the cult of Nellie McClung.

The habit of judging  the historical opinions of people by today's conventions can be problematic, it's as if any comtemporary consensus of progressive opinion exists ahistorically for the past --and future.  I have no doubt that if (by some remote chance) civilization survives, many of our cherished progressive truisms no longer will be.

Douglas's remark was on the progressive end of mainstream opinion for its day (1968) made  during the debate of Trudeau's bill decriminalizing homosexuality (which of course Douglas voted for). Douglas's opinion was in keeping with the "best" and "most authoritive" medical opinion of the day.
Years later:

Quote:
In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.[3] The American Psychological Association Council of Representatives followed in 1975.[4] Thereafter other major mental health organizations followed, including the World Health Organization in 1990.

Even more distressing to ahistorical progressives (as well his gleeful detractors) are his statements on eugenic and sterilization of "sub-humans" written in his 1933 masters thesis.  Those shocking  words were also  unremarkable mainstream sentiment at the height  eugenics "scientific" adoption widely institutionalized in universities and many  modern governments --including formally in some of Canada's provinces. Eugenics ony really became general anathema to progressives after its particularly sordid preditations the Hitler regime.

That's being really quite naive. It's an insult to Tommy Douglas. You people need to adopt a bit of a nuanced approach to your politics. Just because Hillary Clinton is one of the worst fu--ing warmongers the Dem party has ever seen doesn't mean that somebody running against her could ever come close to Tommy Douglas. FWIW, Canada's favourite person.

Will clowns like this help or hurt the opposition to Bernie? So far Bill's absurd comments appear to be hurting Hillary's campaign, and it is kinda strange that Hillary relies on right-wingers like Brock to help try and bolster her campaign.

Brock: Time for Bernie's 'purity bubble' to be burst

The comments from the conservative-turned-Clinton ally followed the delivery of the former president’s ratcheted-up rhetoric just before the Super Bowl Sunday. The strongly-worded speech landed not long after tensions reach a boiling point in the Democratic primary, particularly after the two candidates clashed onstage at Thursday night’s debate, when Clinton said Sanders’ suggestions that she is beholden to Wall Street was an “artful smear."

While some Clinton allies were happy to see the Big Dog turn attack dog, others had immediate flashbacks to 2008, when his harsh criticisms of Barack Obama backfired, particularly in South Carolina. But Clinton loyalists point to 2012 — when the former president stepped in to help Obama — as a more favorable comparison to Clinton’s role. (Sanders’ campaign didn’t respond to a request for a response to Clinton or Brock.)

Sanders appears to have the answers voters want in relation to the Clinton and other attacks on him saying his revolution is credible just as the civil rights movement, the women's movement, the gay rights movement, etc. are credible.

Quote:
He casts his "revolution" in a long line of social movements that have reshaped American society, citing the progress made by civil rights activists, feminists and gay rights advocates. He argues that if voters line up behind him and fight for his plans, their collective power can overcome political intransigency, big campaign donors and special interests.

"Every day the media asks: `Your ideas are so ambitious, how are you going to get them done?"' he said. "We will get them done because people are going to demand that we get them done."

That seems about right as the last 3 polls show an average of about 10% lead for Sanders although it may be less as there appears to be a large group of independents in NH who may shift their vote to another party at the last minute.

Some polls show a much larger lead (up to 32 percent). And in other news there are two national polls with the margin of three points or less.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

I've spent too much time deliberating about monty1 and concluded that I would never get that wasted time back. I banned him, because fuck it, but also because he seems to show contempt for babble and has an appreciation for his own intellect that could only be equalled by a white teenage boy. The way I see it, this is a win-win: he gets to wear his banning like a badge of honour, and we don't have to read his drivel anymore.

Sherbrooke has taken in a lot of refugees for a small city, making it somewhat less lily-white (except for the small Abenakis First Nation). I think Burlington might have done the same.

If Sanders 18% lead hold the Clintons will have been dealt a major blow, and it definitely will now become a national campaign. But to win Bernie has to win big to offset Clinton's superdelegates. It would be sweet for Elizabeth Warren to join the revolution now.

HARRY ENTEN 8:00 PM

ABC News has officially called the New Hampshire Democratic primary for Bernie Sanders. We gave Sanders a greater than 99 percent chance of winning the state, so this isn’t much of a surprise. Still, it’s quite something that someone who wasn’t even a member of the Democratic Party until a few months ago is going to win the first primary on the calendar — and by what looks to be a convincing margin. I don’t think many people would have thought that a democratic socialist would do as well as Sanders is doing. Sanders obviously won’t be on such friendly ground in the Nevada caucuses or South Carolina primary, but the idea that Hillary Clinton is going to put Sanders away anytime soon seems far-fetched.

I hate to rain on the parade, but Sander's victory tonight means nothing in and of itself. New Hampshire doesn't send that many delegates, and being Sander's home turf, he was always going to win here no matter how strong the Clinton campaign was. It's very easy for the pundits to dismiss Sander's victory on those grounds and also on the grounds that New Hampshire doesn't have that many black voters, who seem to at this moment favour Clinton. The question is, is the Sanders margin of victory large enough to overcome these dismissals?

The thing about politics is momentum is very important. When undecided voters see he is a serious contender then his numbers are going to increase.

In the meantime stories like this are surfacing about the Clinton's that show they have no principles.

Quote:

And yet, on her first date with classmate Clinton in 1971, Rodham would later recall:

We both had wanted to see a Mark Rothko exhibit at the Yale Art Gallery but, because of a labor dispute, some of the university's buildings, including the museum, were closed. As Bill and I walked by, he decided he could get us in if we offered to pick up the litter that had accumulated in the gallery's courtyard. Watching him talk our way in was the first time I saw his persuasiveness in action. We had the entire museum to ourselves. We wandered through the galleries talking about Rothko and twentieth-century art. I admit to being surprised at his interest in and knowledge of subjects that seemed, at first, unusual for a Viking from Arkansas. We ended up in the museum's courtyard, where I sat in the large lap of Henry Moore's sculpture Drape Seated Woman while we talked until dark.
