Losing the War, Blame Russia  -  by Finian Cunningham

http://sptnkne.ws/aADu

"Western politicans, media and the Turkish regime are full of it. The latest wave of refugees on the Syria-Turkish border, are, we are told, terrified civilians fleeing Russian airstrikes.

As ever distorting reality, the Western news media are transmitting a classic psychological operation in their coverage of the latest stage in what is actually the foreign-backed war of aggression on Syria.

Incredibly, Russia and the Syrian Arab Army are painted as the 'bad guys' and in turn this narrative is used to build a pretext for 'reponsibility to protect' - the faux humanitarian cover to allow for unwarranted foreign intervention.

This intervention could be either in the form of a US-led military invasion into Syrian territory, or in the form of political, legalistic pressure on Russia and Syria to stop their very effective offensive against illegally armed groups..."

Will Geneva Talks Lead Right Back To Assad's 2011 Reforms?  - by Sharmine Narwani

https://www.rt.com/op-edge/331992-geneva-talks-syria-assad/

"Already, western sponsors of the talks have as much as conceded that Syrian President Bashar al Assad will continue to play a role in any future government - a slap in the face of the foreign-backed Syrian opposition that have demanded his exit. The shaping of post-conflict political landscapes invariably falls to the victor - not the vanquished. And right now Geneva tooks to be the place where this may happen...

So here's a quesition: As the military landscape inside Syria continues to move in the government's favor, will a final deal look very much different than the 2011 reforms package offered by Syrian President Bashar al Assad?"

Breaking: Syria Crisis Plan: Cessation of Hostilities, Humanitarian Airdrop, Peace Talks Laid Out in Munich

https://www.rt.com/news/332211-munich-lavrov-kerry-un-syria/

"An ambitious plan to end hostilities in Syria with verifiable results within a week, revive the Geneva-3 peace talks and immediately begin delivering humanitarian aid to civilians has been unveiled in Munich Germany after talks including the US, Russia and the UN.

Hostilities in Syria could come to a halt within a week after confirmation by the government of President Bashar Assad and the opposition, according to an official communique from the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) meeting.

A press conference is being held after the meeting of the so-called Syria Support Group, with the participation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergy Lavrov, US Secretary of State John Kerry, and UN Special Envoy on Syria, Staffen de Mistura.

Russia is counting on the US and other ISSG countries to put pressure on the Syrian opposition to cooperate with the UN, Lavrov said."

In Syria, If You Can't Find Moderates, Dress Up Some Extremists  -  by Tony Cartalucci

https://t.co/2iORXKtf50

"Upon reading the increasingly desperate headlines pumped out by the Western media as Washington-backed terrorist forces begin to fold under an effective joint Syrian-Russian offensive to take the country back, readers will notice that though the term 'moderate rebels' or 'moderate opposition' is used often, the Western media is seemingly incapable of naming a single faction or leader among them.

The reason for this is because there are no moderates and there never were. Since 2007, the US has conspired to arm and fund extremists affiliated with Al Qaeda to overthrow the government of Syria and destabilize Iran's influence across the entire Middle East."

This still seems to be a difficult concept to assimilate for  many 'progressive' Westerners, who continue to buy US proxies as 'freedom fighters'. As we saw with Ukraine and Libya, this blindness can be fatal.

Syrian War Death Toll At 470,000

http://217.218.67.231/Detail/2016/02/11/449834/Syria-death-toll-casualti...

"The Syrian Center for Policy Research reported that 400,000 Syrians have been killed since the outbreak of the crisis as opposed to the latest UN toll of 260,000. The report added that another 70,000 people have perished due to the lack of adequate health services, food, clean water, sanitation and proper housing, especially for those displaced within conflict areas.

Moreover, 6.36 million people have been displaced internally and more than four million others have fled the country since the beginning of the conflict. That accounts for 45% of the country's population, which has shrunk by 21%.

About 13.8 million Syrians have also lost their source of income. Poverty increased by 85%. In 2015 alone consumer prices rose 53% last year. Additionally, Syria's infrastructure and institutions have been almost obliterated by the catastrophic impact of the military and the overall economic losses are estimated at $255 billion.

'Despite the fact that Syrians have been suffering for five years, global attention to human rights and dignity for them only intensified when the crisis had a direct impact on the societies of developed countries,' the report argued."

We have a confirmation that Saudi Arabia is moving lanes to the American nuclear base in Turkey.  This week US planes bombed civilians in Aleppo from this same base.  Word from Saudi Arabia and Russia is that they expect a full scale Turkish invasion in response to Kurdish YPG consolidation, with American help, of new positions which would block Turkey’s access to its ISIS partners in Syria.

Both high level Russian and Syrian sources contacted this morning have confirmed that a much broader war is imminent.

Turkey has officially announced that they are ready to move into Syria against the US backed YPG who they deem as a terrorist group.  Turkey has yet to attack ISIS and is only fighting Kurds with the exception of the Erbil regional group in Iraq.  There is conclusive evidence that both Erbil and Ankara are fully behind ISIS....from Gordon Duff ...veteranstoday

...so is the game of chicken about to reach its climax? where will Canada stand? given its full support of the Erbil regime backing ISIS?

"Saudi Arabia is to deploy military jets and personnel to Turkey's Incirlik Air Base in the south of the country, Ankara said. The base is already used by the US Air Force for their sorties in Syria. The deployment is part of the US-led effort to defeat the Islamic State terrorist group, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

'At every coalition meeting, we have always emphasized the need for an extensive result-oriented strategy in the fight against the Daesh terrorist group. If we have such a strategy, then Turkey and Saudi Arabia may launch a ground operation,' he added, fueling concerns that a foreign troops invasion may further complicate the already turbulent situation in the war-torn country.

Russia, which supports the government of Bashar Assad, seeing it as the only regional force capable of defeating IS on the ground, has warned against a ground intervention, which Moscow believes would only serve to prolong the war in Syria."

The US 'Plan B' For Syria and The Threat of World War

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2016/02/12/pers-f12.html

"...'Plan B' would consist of a sharp escalation of the US military intervention in Syria, carried out under the cover of combating ISIS, but directed at toppling the Assad government.

Responding to the ominous indications of such an escalation, Russia's PM Dmitry Medvedev told the German daily Handelsblatt Thursday, 'The Americans and our Arab partners must think hard about this - do they want a permanent war? All sides must be forced to the negotiating table instead of sparking a new world war.'

Medvedev's choice of words was not mere hyperbole. A military intervention to rescue the 'rebels' which amounts to a war to save Al Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, the Al Nusra Front, the leading force on the ground in Aleppo province, could quickly bring the US and its allies into contact with Russia, and an armed confrontation between the world's two major nuclear powers.

Turkey, Washington's NATO ally, is meanwhile blocking its border to Syrian refugees in order to create the maximum crisis possible so that it can pursue its own strategic aims, which include not regime change in Damascus, but also the bloody suppression of the Kurdish minority on both sides of the frontier.

The Obama administration has issued no warning to the American people that it is embarking on a policy in Syria that could pit the US against Russian military. The Obama administration has inflicted upon Syria, a war that is every bit as criminal and lethal as the war carried out by the Bush administration against Iraq...."

I wonder if the Kurds (YPG/J/SDF) can work out a truce with the more moderate rebels around Azaz. They've fought with the FSA rebels before and probably still do.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

It's a few days old now, but reviewing Peter Lavelle's recent Crosstalk show (on the dreaded RT for those still unable to watch Russian media) might serve a useful purpose. I really like the contributions of the author of Islamic State: The Digital Taliban (Abdel Bari Atwan) and encourage babblers to watch the show carefully. This guy even follows Saudi domestic media and, for example, notes Saudi political boasts that they "beat" the Russians in Afghanistan and, therefore, can do so again in Syria.

1. The pounding by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), with the support of the Russian AF, of the foreign-sponsored jihadists is not a big change. It is an earthquake. We see in the last few days the truth of that claim. If, as it appears very close, the SAA can reach the Turkish Syrian border, then the armed Syrian opposition is finished. [So it makes sense, from a sick point of view,  that their sponsors would now make direct threats and attacks.**]

2. The political question in the USA bears noting. Can the neo cons, who dominate US foreign policy (whether "liberal" Democrats or "conservative" Republicans makes zero difference) accept a victory involving the Russian AF - or will they explode in apoplectic rage and do their utmost to start World War III? For what we are talking about here is an abysmal, head kicked-in, failure of US policy. And those who, in the main, determine US policy, share the unquestioned view that the USA shall rule the world as globocop.

3. There have already been plenty of claims of the Russian AF killing civilians in large numbers. No evidence, mind you, just claims that aren't backed up by shit. Hell, the Russian MoD (or their equivalent) even noted that the US AF bombed the city that the US propagandists claimed was hit by Russian strikes on 9 - count 'em - 9 hospitals. A crock of shit, but fine, if they're going to make the claims then let's see the evidence. Or STFU. AS one Russian MoD commentator noted, the US bombs hospitals and then blames Russia. What else is new?

4. It's pretty clear that despite the change in the talk of the US [not insisting on the overthrow of Bashar al Assad as a precondition to fighting and defeating the jihadists] , nothing in their aims has changed. The Americans don't even insist that their clients - the Saudis and the Turkish regime - get on the same page. In fact, it rather looks like the tail wagging the American dog here.

5. ** One point worth underlining. Why didn't the Saudis and the Turkish regime, if they "really" want to defeat the jihadists, not wait until the present before making their (alleged) goals clear? If they wanted to defeat Daesh then why not threaten to attack them in Syria over the last four years?

And it becomes crystal clear. It's only when the jihadists are losing that the Saudis and Gollum in Ankara think it's a good idea to intervene. They had no interest in seeing the jihadists lose in all that time.

Anyway, it's easy enough to find the program if you're interested. You can even listen on Soundcloud just for the debate and skip the video part altogether.

Russian Diplomat Drops a Bombshell: US Expected ISIS To Seize Damascus by October

http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/russias-ambassador-uk-drops-bombsh...

"In an article in a British newspaper Russia's ambassador to the UK revealed the Russians were told by the Western powers that after the US proclaimed a no-fly zone, ISIS would capture Damascus.

'Last summer we were told by our Western partners that in October Damascus would fall to IS. What they were planning to do next we don't know. Probably they would have ended up painting the extremists white and accepting them as a Sunni state straddling Iraq and Syria.'

The summer when these conversations between the Western powers and the Russians allegedly took place was the time of the US discussions with Turkey and Jordan about setting up a no-fly zone. What Yakovenko is therefore in effect saying is that the US was planning in the summer to start a bombing campaign to overthrow the government of Syria in the knowledge that this would result by October in the victory of Islamic State and its capture of Damascus..."

Syria: The Final Act Begins  -  by John Wight

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/16/syria-the-final-act-begins/

"In Ankara and Riyadh a decent night's sleep must be hard to come by nowadays, what with the prospect of a Sunni state they envisaged being established across a huge swathe of Syria slipping away in the face of an offensive by Syrian government forces that is sweeping all before it north of Aleppo.

It bears emphasizing: the only 'moderates' fighting in Syria are the troops of the Syrian Arab Army, made up of Sunni, Shia, Alawite, Druze and Christians. They and their allies comprise the forces of non-sectarianism in the country and the region, engaged in a pitiless conflict against the most reactionary and retrograde current of extremism the world has seen since Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge were rampaging across Cambodia.

The success being enjoyed by government forces and its allies on the ground is a testament to their remarkable morale and tenacity despite the battering they have endured over five years of unremitting conflict..."

Kurds capture Syrian town of Tel Rifaat despite Ankara's threats
DEBKAfile February 16, 2016, 3:41 PM (IDT)

Fighters from the Kurdish YPG militia on Tuesday captured the town of Tel Rifaat, one of the largest rebel strongholds after Aleppo, in Syria's Idlib province near the Turkish border. The move came despite threats from Ankara that it would launch a military operation within Syria if the Kurds continue to advance.
DEBKAfile's military sources: Turkey is making empty threats and has no intention to launch such an operation. It also has no intention to establish a ground force consisting of troops from Islamic countries to depose Syrian President Bashar Assad, which it has proposed, or to invade Syria.

UN Security Council Urges Turkey To 'Comply With International Law' in Syria After Russia Requests Meeting

http://on.rt.com/74p6

"Following a briefing requested by Russia, the UN Security Council has urged Ankara to comply with international law in Syria. The closed-door meeting was called to discuss recent Turkish shelling of Kurdish YPG militia targets in Syria's north.

'UN Security Council members are concerned with the Turkish attacks on a number of Syrian regions,' Venezuelan Ambassador Rafael Ramirez, who now chairs the UNSC, said after the meeting, as cited by Tass. 'All members of the Security Council...agreed to ask for Turkey to comply with international law,' he added.

When asked if the UNSC discussed the shelling of hospitals and schools in Northern Syria on Monday which left close to 50 people dead, Ramirez said the Council indeed discussed the issue, but reached 'no agreement' or 'consensus' because of 'different sources' of information on the incidents.

'Everybody is concerned about airstrikes over humanitarian installations,' said Ramirez, stressing that the UNSC is trying to get 'more information.' The UNSC president [also] highlighted the need to have Kurds represented in the Syrian peace process, and for Ankara not to escalate the situation even further."

Refugees, Radicals & Regime Change: 'Merkel Supports No-Fly Zone in Syria Due to Turkish Interests

http://on.rt.com/74nw

Q: Why do you think Merkel has voiced support for a 'no fly zone' in Syria?

MO: "First of all, it is not only Angela Merkel; [the destruction and dismemberment of Syria utilizing Takfiri terrorists was a collective Western/GCC/NATO project of which Canada is a part. Hence Trudeau's 'two-sided' waffling above]. She is supported by Foreign Minister Steinmeier, the West German Intelligence Service and other high-ranking government forces.

So why do they do this? Because of two or three reasons. Number one, they are to a large extent pressured by the [NATO] Turkish regime's interest due to the refugee crisis. Number two, the open agenda for Germany is regime change by all means in Syria.

And since the Syrian government, supported by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah - is making big advances and seriously fighting terrorists, they are getting very nervous. So, they are not interested in peace, but they want to stop this kind of advance by the forces on the ground.

It is a very big and very dirty game."

Trudeau's schizophrenic waffling above is related to his Washington master Barack Obama's similar obfuscations here. Canadians need to ask why ISIS grew in strenght and territory during the more than a year and a half of US-led coalition bombing, and so rapidly collapsed after a much smaller air campaign by Russia. If Canada had a strong anti-war movement instead of a strong pro-imperialist movement, we might also hear speakers like this.

Turkey Pushes For Ground Invasion of Syria

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2016/02/17/syri-f17.html

"Less than a week after the US, Russia and the other 15 members of the International Syria Support Group agreed in Munich on a 'cessation of hostilities', by the end of this week, the five year old conflict appears to be closer than ever to erupting into a regional and potentially global conflict.

Syrian President Assad issued a warning to this effect on Monday, saying that any ground invasion of Syria would have 'global repercussions,' and that Turkish and Saudi forces would find such an adventure would be no 'picnic'.

Assad's statement follows similar warnings by Russian PM Dmitri Medvedev, who said last week that such an intervention would pose the danger of 'sparking a new world war.'

The hysteria being whipped up over the 50 civilian casualties reported on Monday is an indication that the threat of a wider war is steadily growing. The French and British governments followed Turkey in alleging that the Syrian and Russian governments were guilty of 'war crimes.'

More substantively, German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced her support for a 'no fly zone', a long-time demand of the Turkish government, which wants to carve out a cordon of Syrian territory, as a means of better organizing the war for regime-change, and quelling the Kurds, and containing the flow of refugees.

Russia denies responsibility for the attacks on the schools and hospitals, insisting that it had no forces capable of firing the missiles that were said to have him them. The worst of the attacks took place in Azaz, where PM Davutoglu vowed Turkey would 'mount a severe response' to the Kurdish offensive.

The Syrian ambassador to Moscow, Riad Haddad, charged that one of the hospitals had been the target of a US air strike. The furor over alleged Russian and Syrian government 'war-crimes' stands in stark contrast to the utter silence of Western governments and media over the deaths of civilians resulting from air strikes by the US-led coalition, which have killed roughly 1,000 since they began in August 2014.

Amid the growing international tensions, it was announced in Syria that Hashem al Sheikh, also known as Abu Jaber, has been named the new commander of the so-called 'rebels' resisting the Syrian government advance on the city of Aleppo. He was until last September, the leader of Ahrar al Sham, a hardline Salafist jihadi militia founded by Al Qaeda veterans from Afghanistan.

It has fought in close alliance with Al Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, the al Nusra Front, as well as Chechen Islamist fighters. These are the elements that Washington and its allies routinely refer to as the 'moderate opposition.'

Syrian Crisis Moving Slowly Into Turkey: Commentator (and vid)

'Well, this is a very dangerous escalation. The convoy that was targeted is military, which means there is planning. It happened near government offices, so this is very dangerous and I believe there will be a response to this and I am afraid the Syrian crisis is moving into Turkey and probably beyond, unless something is done about this ongoing Syria catastrophe.

I believe that we will see probably military action in northern Syria and probably with the Syrian regime itself and Russia. This is a crisis that is unfolding and I believe everybody is going about solving it the wrong way."

"Press TV has conducted an interview with Catherine Shakdam, program director at the Shafqna Insitute of Middle East studies in London, and Michael Lane, founder of the American Institute for Foreign Policy, in Washington, to discuss Turkey's proposal for a no-fly zone in Syria.

Shakdam says Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lost his 'footing' in Syria and is trying to 'salvage' a policy that has backfired against him. She also asserts that a no-fly zone would make things worse as it would allow Daesh Takfiri terrorists to regain control of territories liberated by the Syrian Armed Forces.

Lane for his part believes the imposition of a no-fly zone in Syria would be a very 'successful humanitarian' effort, but it would serve Turkey's current objectives."

Turkey Blames Syrian Kurds For Ankara Blast, They Deny Responsibility, Point to ISIS

https://www.rt.com/news/332848-ankara-blast-syrian-kurds/

"Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu has accused forces linked with the Syrian Kurdistan YPG militia of the terrorist attack in Ankara on Wednesday. 'In light of information we have obtained, it has been clearly indicated that this attack was carried out by members of a terrorist organization inside Turkey, together with a YPG member who had crossed from Syria,' Davutoglu said.

Kurdish self defence forces did not organize the attack in Ankara, Kurdish Democratic Union (PYD) chief Salih Muslim Muhammad told RIA Novosti. 'This is absolutely not true. Kurds have nothing to do with what happened in Ankara. What happened there is related to Turkey's fight with Islamic State, whose members live in Turkey.

I can assure you that not even one bullet is fired by the YPG into Turkey. They don't consider Turkey as an enemy.'

Davutoglu claimed Ankara had evidence revealing where the militants came from and how they organized themselves, and that this information would soon be shared with other countries. He also warned other nations against throwing their weight behind 'an enemy of Turkey.'"

Davutoglu on Thursday said a member of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia working with PKK militants was behind the Ankara bombing attack. The leader of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party denied the accusation, saying Ankara was making the allegation in order to escalate the conflict in Syria.

On Thursday, a bomb detonated by remote control, killed 7 Turkish security force members travelling in a military vehicle in southeast Turkey. The blast hit the armed vehicle on the highway linking Diyarbakir, the largest city in the mainly Kurdish southeast, in the district of Lice.

So is this what´s going on in the Middle East...a power play using oil price to concentrate wealth and control...of government, military, police?

First crash the price to elimiate the juniors and intermediates, crash the industries of Canada, USA, Russia, Venezuela?

The model to be used is Kuwait/Iraq? First the CIA convinces the Kuwaitis to steal Iraqi oil, assuring that they can restrain Iraq from retaliation...meanwhile the State department egging Hussein on, to invade to compensate...then of course the invasion to rid the planet of the evil imperialist Hussein, to take control of their oil.....

So in Syria...the CIA, responsible to finance and train, utilizing their own war and terror manual, the ISILs...then using the terror to egg Russia into the fray, while encouraging Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Canada et al to invade Syria...then watch the Middle East blow up?

Maybe global winter from the fumes of the exploding oil and gas fields...so what...don´t they have free energy generators artificial suns, until the Earth replenishes itself? Is this too fanciful? The oil catastrophe in the Gulf? Fukushima destroying the ecosystems of the Pacific?

Just wait it out...while the price of oil skyrockets and the oligarchs controlling the oil majors clean up?

So the destruction of the oil infrastructure of Syria, Iraq, Turkey will be the catalyst to spark jump the oil price!

So does this explain the detente in Iran? Will the ensuing civil war in Saudi Arabia give control of those oil wells to the shiites following the model of the Barzani Kurdistan, totally dependant on the oil majors for survival?

So is this just all wild speculation? Watch the oil majors stock prices! This will be the clue!

So what! millions die, millions left homeless, 100s of thousands of refugees fleeing for safe havens, global winter for a few generations? Maybe less!

What vicious sickness and perversion! And we still maintain our loyalties to these monsters, through their media, their electronic gadgets, their control of the drug trade! Their government puppets?

"...It should be noted that in all western media stories, it is never precisely mentioned who the Kurds are fighting in Azaz - because it it is ISIS. Considering this, Turkey would be quite literally intervening to save ISIS and other hardcore terrorist groups sharing the city with it.

An invasion into Syria would constitute an act of war - and beyond that - affirmation that NATO was behind the ISIS menace from the beginning. While leaks like that of the US' own Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in 2015 have exposed this rhetorically, a NATO invasion of Syria to save an ISIS stronghold from destruction would prove it demonstrably.

The fact that the US is attempting to distance itself politically from both Turkey and Saudi Arabia - who has also pledged to carry out ground operations in Syria amid the collapse of terrorist fronts across the country - indicates a possible attempt to produce plausible deniability ahead of a much larger provocation or intervention..."
