I ran into this video of Mélanie Joly (Minister of Canadian Heritage) on TV in France, I think.  She seems to be talking about the official languages act, but I'm not sure, since I'm unilingual.

Yeah, thanks.

She's a brain-dead, incoherent idiot. She said nothing whatsoever. Never answered the question about why responsibility for the Official Languages Act has been removed from her ministerial responsibility. And pronounced some horrendous horseshit about how 2017 will be the anniversary of the greatest democracy in Middle East (whoops, the world, sorry) - Canada.

Hope that helps.

Ok, I've settled down a bit lol, and listened more carefully.

The interviewer asked why the name of her ministry had changed. Note that she is Minister of Canadian Heritage, whereas her predecessor (Shelly Glover) was Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Her reply is incoherent.

Also, talking about 2017 (150th anniversary of Confederation), she calls Canada "one of the oldest democracies" in the world. She says this to a French interviewer. In France.

Her response is absurd. The new challenges faced by minority francophone communities are no reason to remove "Official Languages" from the mandate of the ministry. (No, she didn't mention anglophones in rural Québec). Who is responsible for Official Languages? Many associations and other groups count on this ministry for funding of translation and publication in French and English.

There should be some kind of recognition and FUNDING of Indigenous languages. Why is this not mentioned? Mexico recognizes its Indigenous languages - of course the populations of speakers are much larger, but it is also a poorer country. This is an important facet of Truth and Reconciliation. Listening to Residential School survivors, one point ALL of them make is "We weren't allowed to speak our language", "We were punished for speaking our language".

In MP Roméo Saganash's family, some of the kids were sent to French residential schools and others to English ones. The siblings and cousins couldn't even all speak to one another... They had to re-learn Cree.

What amazing historical ignorance!

She also accumulates clichés such as "game plan" and "road map" - in the same sentence.

The comments below the youtubue video are considerably more coherent than her reply!

Despite the bafflegab, the Official Languages Branch still seems to think it reports to Canadian Heritage. Her mandate letter also inbstructs her to work on official languages.
