Since the EU referendum the Lib Dems have made headlines by taking an unambiguously pro-EU stance and pledging to bring Britain back into the bloc if elected to government.
With a pool of 48 per cent of voters clearly supportive of staying in the bloc, Tim Farron’s party appear to be picking up some converts.
In the seats won by the party it recorded increases in vote share of 33 per cent, 13 per cent, and 32 per cent respectively. It also won 41 per cent in a seat in which it stood no candidate at the previous election.

The split in the left-of-centre vote kept Thatcher in office with crushing Commons majorities for seven more years. In 1990, after never quite regaining its initial popularity, the SDP was disbanded.

It is time to accept the fact that Brexit may never actually happen
The more time goes by, the more plausible it becomes that the UK may never actually leave the European Union.
Leaving the EU is so difficult, and the consequences are so economically damaging, that it may be easier for prime minister Theresa May’s government to endlessly delay the process rather than to actually leave.
Morgan Stanley economists Jacob Nell and Melanie Baker published a fascinating note to investors this morning in which they attempt to figure out how the UK will actually leave the EU, and what the UK’s post-Brexit relationship with Europe will look like. Nell and Baker do not make any specific predictions about how the UK will leave the EU, but they do point out two key facts:
- The EU will not give the UK a deal in which Britain gets access to the single market but opts out of the “freedom of movement” requirement that lets EU migrants into the country. In fact, the EU cannot give this deal to the UK because it would represent an existential threat to the EU itself: If one country gets access to the single market while controlling its own immigration borders, then every country in the EU will want to do the same.
- Leaving the EU will cause such massive damage to the UK economy that it might be political suicide for any government to actually leave despite the fact that a majority of people voted Leave in the EU Referendum.

Interesting point made by the former UK minister for Europe in Report On Business (Globe & Mail) today.
Liam Fox, a devotee of Margaret Thatcher and a strident anti-European, has been brought back from the backbenches to be Ms. May’s trade minister. He wasted no time in telling the London Sunday Times that he’d already had “very fruitful” trade talks with Canada and that “we have already had a number of countries saying ‘We’d love to do a trade deal with the world’s fifth-biggest economy without having to deal with the other 27 members of the EU.’”...Legally, Britain can’t do a trade deal with Canada, North Korea or anyone else until it has fully and finally quit the European Union, since under its treaty obligations, it’s the EU, not individual member states, that concludes trade deals.
