Speaking over the phone for an unrelated story, Carl Paladino—the 2010 GOP candidate for governor of New York—abruptly changed subjects and assailed the sitting president and his policies. The Buffalo-based real estate developer and Tea Party activist maintained that Obama, a practicing Christian, has sought to mislead the public about his religious affiliation, but that the citizenry has not fallen for his falsehoods.

“In the mind of the average American, there is no doubt he is a Muslim,” Paladino said. “He is not a Christian.”

We’re gonna open up those libel laws.

With me, they’re not protected, because I’m not like other people…We’re gonna open up those libel laws, folks, and we’re gonna have people sue you like you never get sued before.

Donald Trump's calamitous week leads to questions about his state of mind

Brilliant!

The unbearable stench of Trump’s B.S.

The unbearable stench of Trump’s B.S.

A few days ago, I was asked on CNN to make sense of one more case in which Donald Trump had said something demonstrably false and then explained it away with a caustic tweet and an indignant interview. I replied that there was a pattern here and a term for a person who did this kind of thing: a “bullshit artist.” I got cheers and boos for the comment from partisans on both sides, but I was not using that label casually. Trump is many things, some of them dark and dangerous, but at his core, he is a B.S. artist.

Harry Frankfurt, an eminent moral philosopher and former professor at Princeton, wrote a brilliant essay in 1986 called “On Bullshit.” (Frankfurt himself wrote about Trump in this vein, as have Jeet Heer and Eldar Sarajlic.) In the essay, Frankfurt distinguishes crucially between lies and B.S.: “Telling a lie is an act with a sharp focus. It is designed to insert a particular falsehood at a specific point. . . . In order to invent a lie at all, [the teller of a lie] must think he knows what is true.”

But someone engaging in B.S., Frankfurt says, “is neither on the side of the true nor on the side of the false. His eye is not on the facts at all . . . except insofar as they may be pertinent to his interest in getting away with what he says.” Frankfurt writes that the B.S.-er’s “focus is panoramic rather than particular” and that he has “more spacious opportunities for improvisation, color, and imaginative play. This is less a matter of craft than of art. Hence the familiar notion of the ‘bullshit artist.’ ”

This has been Trump’s mode all his life. He boasts — and boasts and boasts — about his business, his buildings, his books, his wives. Much of it is a concoction of hyperbole and falsehoods. And when he’s found out, he’s like that guy we have all met at a bar who makes wild claims but when confronted with the truth, quickly responds, “I knew that!”

Take, for instance, the most extraordinary example, his non-relationship with Vladimir Putin. In May 2014, addressing the National Press Club, Trump said, “I was in Russia, I was in Moscow recently and I spoke, indirectly and directly, with President Putin, who could not have been nicer.” In November 2015, at a Fox Business debate, he said of Putin, “I got to know him very well because we were both on ‘60 Minutes.’ ”

Donald Trump's most outrageous Four-Pinocchio claims    Play Video3:42 The Post's Fact Checker took a look at Trump's five biggest whoppers. (Jenny Starrs/The Washington Post)

Did Trump really believe that you could say something like that on live TV and no one would check? Did he think that no one would notice that the “60 Minutes” show consisted of two separate prerecorded interviews, with Putin in Moscow and Trump in New York? (By that logic, I have gotten to know Franklin Roosevelt very well because I have run some clips of him on my television show.)

In fact, Trump was bullshitting. He sees himself as important, a global celebrity, the kind of man who should or could have met Putin. Why does it matter that they did not actually meet?

Mr. Magoo

I think that suggesting that he's "unfit" for the job of President is onside (and probably predictable).

Suggesting that he's a crazy who hears voices wouldn't fly even here on our message board.  No matter how much I might disagree with another babbler, it's generally considered unacceptable to say that "I worry about their mental health", or ask them "have you taken your meds today?"

I hope that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are that desperate.

I am well aware of the post-Nazi symbolism of the modern Olympics, however it seems to have given a distraction from the completely dismal Trump/Clinton election season in the US.

iyraste1313

what is most dismal is that people don't see the benefits and necessity of such a season...there will be no progressive mass politics in North America until people break their chains from confidence in the totally corrupt criminal ecocide system we live under...even our complete loss of liberty doesn't seem to faze people....no! it will take the finances to do it...more than just dismal politics!

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

It's almost touching to read these conservatives discovering Trump's racism and such. In other circumstances, of course, they would be big cheerleaders for such a right-wing lout. But sometimes one vile prejudice overcomes another.

In this case, shrill outrage over Trump's agnosticism on agressive US foreign policy "trumps" everything else. If this candidate would just get in line on the "proper" foreign policy of the Empire, then all would be forgiven - including all the ugly racism and the rest of it.

In a New York minute.

brookmere

American conservatives aren't that dumb. They know that at least they have to avoid driving away those demographics that will be needed to win in the future - Hispanics in particular. This was laid out expressly in their post-mortem of the 2012 election.

Also, Trump's would-be foreign policy is just as agressive as the Republican mainstream, just not as loyal to some traditional US allies.

iyraste1313

It's not just the neoconservatives...but the neoliberals...the people masquerading as progressives, but support the globalist and imperialist agenda...these are the gatekeepers..the obamaites, the justinians ad nauseum...as long as these people are around with credibility, serious alternative and socialist movements cannot flourish!

Trump has dared to challenge some unquestioned sacred cows of US foreign policy which neither the Republican mainstream nor the Democrats have said anything about. It's a very big deal: on matters relating to the usefulness of NATO, couched in terms of "enough" contributions by other member-states but a serious challenge nonetheless, on the current destructive relations with Russia, and on spending some of those resources dedicated to war on other priorities.

I totally agree trump has been BBQing those sacred cows.  His foreign policy is a radical shift from the position of  both the Rep and Dem.  With Hillary and all her hangerons(which now include neocons which set policy in Rep party before Trump) it seems to me that Trump is less dangerous.  From Hillary's statements and those of her supporters I think she wants to put Russia in its place.  Playing these power games with less developed nations without a military industrail base is one thing.  But trying the usual play book at Putin and hoping he can bullied or being impressed by american air power is not going to work.  Putin has decreed that on some issues he will not bend.  Trump does not see these issues being in the national interest of the US.
