Hillary Clinton is a feast for conspiracy theorists who are some of the biggest obstacles to intelligent discourse

To a lot of Trump supporters Clinton does have a mental illness in that she is a woman. As bad as she could be -- the only alternative that could win is a lot worse.

I have heard no evidence that she has a mental illness although we know that one in five people do and I would guess among Presidents it is likely higher than that. And we know that many highly effective world leaders have suffered from mental illness.

I suspect she is getting whatever health care support she needs as she can afford it.

As for Trump -- he is a very nasty, prejudiced man with a horrible outlook -- it does not matter if he is ill or not -- someone with those views should not lead any country. He may well be just a prejudiced turd who is not very bright, rather in love with himself, but otherwise healthy in a clinical sense. I would be more comfortable with someone fighting personal demons that someone who is fighting half the world due to his hatred.

Clinton let's face it, is a weak nominee, and after the Democrats just completing 2 consecutive terms in the WH, the current polling shows what a mess Trump/GOP are in
Yes Trump has narrowed the gap a bit, but Clinton has built up such a lead with the respectable polling community that she is is expected to win by a landslide. But regardless, even if she does win, the GOP are so full of hatred and in such disarray that the next 4 years will just be more gridlock in Washington

6079_Smith_W

That depends on who wins the house and senate.

NorthReport

The Democrats may take the Senate but unless there is a complete collapse of the GOP vote, the Republicans will keep the House The last I heard is that the Democrats may pick up 10 to 15 House seats but they need close to 30

If the GOP had problems with a black president I can just imagine how they will act with a female one

If Clinton wins I hope Obama pulls Garland and Clinton nominates Obama to the Supreme Court Think about what those hearings would be like

This goes beyond her as a woman although I am sure that is behind a lot of this. The stream of propaganda about her  -- much of it very extreme means that things will be toxic no matter what. A defeat of Trump doe not fix the problem either as many other Republicans have been involved.

That’s exactly what they ought to be doing. The fact that quid pro quos cannot be definitively proven does not remotely negate the urgency of this journalism. That’s because quid pro quos by their nature elude such proof (can anyone prove that Republicans steadfastly support Israel and low taxes because of the millions they get from Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers, or that the Florida attorney general decided not to prosecute Trump because his foundation and his daughter donated to her?).

The author is basically saying that in the absence of evidence, journalists have a moral duty to become the rumour mill.

There is absolutely no reason to worry about Hillary's ability to handle classified information, and in any case that surely has no impact on whether she would make a good CIC, right? Definitive editorial here:

It is awfully kind of our betters to tell us how to think, don't you think?

kropotkin1951

Hillary's main redeeming trait is that she is not Trump. To me that is hardly a reason to vote for her. The real question seems to be which POTUS will drop the facade and start ruling overtly as an Emperor. Given that Hillary is definitely most likely to keep the facade while ruling like an Empress ergo she must be a better choice.

How's that been working for the fellow currently in the job? Seems to me he has spent the bulk of his time dealing with congress trying to prevent him from doing what he was elected to do.

It's not a particularly compelling reason to vote for Trump instead.

And except when we're dreaming, those are pretty much the only two choices.  Trump or Clinton.  Bernie Sanders isn't going to magically win.  Jill Stein isn't going to magically win.

6079_Smith_W

and with all due respect, I don't think let's make it all fall apart by not voting at all is going to win anytime soon either.

A large plurality of the American voters have chosen a third option and they are more numerous than either Democratic or Republican voters. They simply don't vote. I think that says alot about the state of America's democracy.

It's fun to say, like with every election ever, that there's no difference between the candidates or parties.  But then how can we explain why elections and politics in the U.S. are so incredibly polarized?

ygtbk

I would have said vote for Gary Johnson, since the main party candidates are both abysmal, but Glenn Reynolds makes a cogent case for voting Trump:

Quote:

So if the choice in 2016 is between one bad candidate and another (and it is) the question is, which one will do the least harm. And, judging by the civil service’s behavior, that’s got to be Trump. If Trump tries to target his enemies with the IRS, you can bet that he’ll get a lot of pushback — and the press, instead of explaining it away, will make a huge stink. If Trump engages in influence-peddling, or abuses secrecy laws, you can bet that, even if Trump’s appointees sit atop the DOJ or FBI, the civil service will ensure that things don’t get swept under the rug. And if Trump wants to go to war, he’ll get far more scrutiny than Hillary will get — or, in cases like her disastrous Libya invasion, has gotten.

Mr. Magoo

So basically the bumbling buffoon instead of the scary establishment favourite.

That's how Toronto got Rob Ford.

ygbtk, that opinion piece is one hyper-emotional tangle of tortured logic. Good grief.

Mr. Magoo

When kids with ADHD do it, it's called "acting out".

Those kids need adults to understand that they're unhappy and in distress, but they don't know how to use their words.

I think he's going through some denial about not voting Libertarian. Other than that, it didn't seem hyper-emotional to me - just frustrated that trying to figure out the least bad choice is the best that can be done this election cycle. YMMV, of course.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Meh. Most libertarians are giant man-babies at the best of times. He's having a little meltdown because the Democrat candidate is a better choice than the Republican even for Republicans.

This is a great soundbite, but wouldn't the Democrat candidate have a historic lead in the polls if it was true?

Mr. Magoo

Not if the good, honest, patriotic Republicans have any say in it.

Which they, of course, do.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

I dunno, maybe mobilizing the white supremacist vote is helping.

Michael Moriarity

There are good reasons to disbelieve anything spoken or written by Prof. Reynolds.

Cody87

I would have said vote for Gary Johnson, since the main party candidates are both abysmal, but Glenn Reynolds makes a cogent case for voting Trump:

Actually, at one time I was aboard the "Trump wouldn't be able to accomplish anything, so he's less dangerous" train. I no longer believe Trump wouldn't be able to accomplish anything. Betting against Trump has so far not been a good bet.

Not if the good, honest, patriotic Republicans have any say in it.

Which they, of course, do.

I was responding to a claim that Clinton is better for Republicans than Trump. Tough to see how that can be when the polls are nearly tied. Unless we are using the "why are people voting against their own interests" fallacy that should have seen Mulcair's New Democrats win with 80% of the popular vote.

I dunno, maybe mobilizing the white supremacist vote is helping.

When I lurk on centrist and right-leaning forums, I'm always amazed by how many of the white supremacists aren't actually white.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Well, I guess we can chalk that up to the vagaries of anecdote. I won't flat out call you a liar, but I think that's probably bullshit. Trump is very popular with white supremacists and seems to be having issues with attracting POC. Crazy how black people are often targeted at rallies.

So does that mean that Tim Kaine is actually Wall Street's chosen President?

NorthReport

Actually if Clinton keeps on screwing up her campaign like she did last nite, what's wrong with her, it may be Pence we should be talking about, which is indeed an even scarier thought.

Mr. Magoo

It's been noted a bunch of times -- and I don't even entirely disagree -- that Clinton's campaign seems to be built on the fact that she's NOT Donald Trump, rather than on its own inspiring merits.

But I note that this is now the THIRD election where the Republican candidate's most flattering compliment is that he's at least eligible to be President.  Clinton can't pass the medical, apparently, and Obama had that whole "born in Muslim" thing hanging around his neck.

They couldn't saddle Kerry with ineligibility on the grounds of war cowardice, but those Swiftboaters definitely tried then too.

This is superb Smith

I think a lot of Republicans would have got down on their knees to take their orders from Condoleeza Rice, and she's both.

I think even Sarah Palin would have enjoyed a bit of such servitude.

And heck, Colin Powell couldn't have inspected the troops, because he's black?

As long as they aren't queer, atheist or "liberal" then it's all about inclusivity.

6079_Smith_W

I think it is both. Sure they love Ayn Rand and Margaret Thatcher and Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin.

But if it is someone they DON'T like then she's just some woman and the same misogynist crap is there that no white guy would get in the same way, just like the racism was there with Obama.

More fake news. She was there for an hour and a half, and felt tired, and tripped while leaving, despite what "a source" says.

Hot day, dark clothing, Kevlar vest, standing in the sun. Yah, she couldn't be overheated.

Mr. Magoo

I read that she basically goes unconscious for five or six hours at a time, and that she does this pretty much every single day.

Why is the liberal-loving press not talking about this??

Cody87

Et tu, Magoo?

Nah, I'm just kidding. Her health is obviously fine. Nothing strange happened today and there is no relevant context from the past weeks. It's just a giant right-wing conspiracy.

If anyone is curious to know what the actual conspiracy theorists are talking about today, it's whether or not Hillary has a body double.

I cannot possibly be the only person to have noticed this, and the Toronto Star is not normally described as right-wing:

Though funny, I saw a number of people on FB pipe in about how this is a possible opportunity for Bernie to take over.

Perhaps someone might notice that year-long election campaigns are a problem for the candidates. I think the population is already there.

I don't want to speculate on how Canadian politicians would do campaigning like this.

That said, to have this happen in public is an indication that her health was not being managed appropriately (daily capacity). It should not get to this point. In these kinds of gruelling situations daily monitoring is important and you would think it would avoid something like this. She should have been able to walk away before it got to this point -- perhaps a bad gamble. This could happen to a much younger person as well but even a healthy person of her age (and younger) cannot blast on ignoring any signs until they collapse.

That video may be toxic to her campaign even assuming everything is fine which it may well be.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

She's damned if she doesn't and damned if she does.

I don't think she could have sat out the 9/11 event without a shitload of criticism. What we've seen is that this woman is tough as nails - heat, humidity, the fact that she's got the kevlar vest on (exacerbating heat), and pneumonia but she toughs it out and fucking shows up. I've had pneumonia and even though I am pretty stoic and hard to slow down, I was flattened for a week - at 25 yrs old. Stamina, man, stamina!
