A group of women from all over the world are about to embark on a dangerous journey on board the Women’s Boat to Gaza (WBG). Two vessels are leaving from Barcelona on 14 September with the goal of reaching the besieged Palestinian enclave by early October in a symbolic breaking of the Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

One of these women is Zohar Chamberlain Regev, an Israeli citizen who was born and raised in Kibbutz Kfar Hahoresh, near Nazareth. She has been living in Spain for the past 12 years and has been involved in the Spanish component of Freedom Flotilla work since 2012. She coordinates the Women’s Boat to Gaza Steering Committee and is a team leader onboard the Amal.

“We want to give visibility to women in Palestine who have been struggling alongside the men since before the Nakba, since the beginning of the Zionist colonisation of Palestine,” says Regev.

She is currently co-chair of the Social Justice Co-op, which works in the areas of environmental and tax justice. She is also working with a refugee group in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Marilyn is an experienced sailor, having cruised and raced mostly off the UK and eastern Canadian coasts, as well as in the Mediterranean.

Wendy Goldsmith, an organizer with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, is a mother of three, a social worker and an advocate for justice who lives with her family in London, Ontario. As a social worker, she has supported many survivors of childhood trauma and abuse, including within First Nations communities. As a mom, she identifies with the suffering that Palestinian women feel as they endure the injustice of supporting their families under an illegal blockade and within an open-air prison, constantly under threat of attacks by the occupier.

Odd that there are no Québécoises, unless they are listed separately. Québec solidaire MNA Manon Massé was on the boat in 2011. I was on the communications committee supporting the effort with press releases, translations and other communications, during the last two attempts. Well, we'll stiil have to see the final makeup of the crew.

I know Wendy. She is a remarkable woman and an amazing activist (I'm sure the other women are amazing as well). She and David Heap (who was in Barcelona for the launch) started working on this project a few years ago. A great many people around the world have worked very hard to make this happen. They go knowing that there is little chance of them getting past the 6 mile blockade and into Gaza. I wish them all a safe journey.

I wonder if we still have our "boat" ... the Mtl group supporting the Boat had built a mock boat to hoist and carry to demos here.

I don't know any of the Canadians this time, but I'll peruse the blog and see if there is anyone I know (here or elsewhere) involved.

“Today at 15:58 the Women’s Boat to Gaza, Zaytouna-Oliva, has lost communication, and we can presume that the Israeli Occupation Navy has surrounded it in International Waters (Lat +31.906033 Lon +33.757630). This is inside the self-proclaimed “military exclusion zone” imposed unilaterally and illegally by the Israeli government, in contravention of international law.
