Is this an admission that Trudeau is doing a better job than Harper did in 10 years so far?

I have to give kudos to the Liberals for freeing a Canadian being held by a foreign (and Communist) country for 'spying'.

Other than that I'm not endorsing the Liberals. Just to be clear.

And he is absolutely right.

For the most part Trudeau says the right things.

This is of course better than those who deny those things.

Now if we could leverage the stuff he says into policies that do those things and do them in the proportions and scale with the urgency required, we would have something.

He has the electoral mandate to do that but in some cases it is becoming obvious that this is not happening.

Talking is essential but doing is the thing that makes the change we need more of that.

The world economic forum ranks countries when it comes to women's equality.

These are the ones doing better than Canada. Please read the list carefully. Canada is 30th with a score of  0.740.

Even claiming to be ahead of the USA is not available for Canada here.

Ireland no definition of a wealthy country ranks 5. Rwanda 6. Burundi even manages 23. The US and Cuba look like they are about equal so I don't know how the ties are broken but they are ranked just ahead.

So North...does this mean you're going to start defending C-51 and the pipelines?  You appear to have become a full-fledged Justinmaniac.

NorthReport

Mulcair was given some good advice, disregarded it, and it showed during the debates After Layton's leadership there were high expectations for Mulcair Both he and Dix should have been prepared for both eventualities and stepped down election nite As much as Mulcair appears to need help with his personal financial issues, which is unfortunate, that is not the responsibility of the party Keeping Mulcair on like this is just another indication the NDP is not ready for primetime politics!

Know thine enemy.

This is a feather in Trudeau's cap. Add to that Bono's recent endorsement. Recall that swing voters didn't start paying attention to politics until the last couple of weeks of the election. It doesn't look like Trudeau's honeymoon is going to end anytime soon; certainly not without boldness which means risk-taking but very strategic risk taking not just striking out at whatever pops up.

My bet is that Trudeau sold the Chinese government that it would build goodwill in Canada which would aid his ability to sell the free trade deal he is trying to set up.

We need a progressive opposition that will denounce these trade deals including CETA and promote the inclusion of a minimum tax for corporations so they can't play countries off of one another. We need a party that will open the discussion on food security and manufacturing security. Someone needs to say some protection is a good thing.

So now we should elect PM's based on Bono's views. LMAO

This is the height of inanity.

I think the Chinese threw him a bone not that Trudeau got anything from them. Unless of course in private conversations he took of his shirt and flexed his gorgeous muscles.

Freeing Garrett: good news, good work by Canadian diplomats, perhaps.

Global Fund on AIDS meeting in Montreal: really important, good work by Canadian diplomats, nice to see PM backing up efforts by international development minister and others on a vital issue. Always good for Canadian egos to hear Bono has nice words for Canada. He did not endorse one party over another that I can see.

Trudeau's role: backing up other Canadian efforts in useful ways. Would another PM have done the same as effectively? Unknown on the evidence from these two cases. I'm sure that Trudeau would be among those to say that it's not all him, these are team efforts. But Canada less embarrassing in international affairs than in previous decade, for sure.

Strongly agree. There is nothing to be gained by shitting on any and everything Trudeau has done so far in regards to International relations. Maybe it's an inconvenient truth for some.

Still, the TPP and supporting the US in Syria, for that matter, all of the Middle East is not only worth criticizing but worth condemning.

Bono said that of all the world leaders who have ever played host to a replenishment event like the one being held in Montreal, Trudeau has been by far the most “aggressive. I have to tell you, Justin Trudeau is not just rolling up his sleeves, he’s been on the phones. He’s really worked at this,” he told Clark.

Don't be ridiculous. Are you incapable of understanding that this sort of endorsement will help Trudeau politically? Do you think Trudeau's current popularity is based purely on policy? While I realize Bono is not nearly progressive enough to satisfy you I can assure you that many Canadians do think that Bono is progressive and will consider his endorsement a point of pride.

PS The Chinese didn't just throw him a bone, they want something in return.

Old joke:

Bono, clapping his hands during a concert:  "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies of starvation!!"

Audience member in the back:  "Then stop clapping, you fucking git!!"

No they threw him a bone because he probably assured them that he supports Kinder Morgan. You know trading aboriginal and community rights for a sound bite about rescueing two Canadians from a jail sentence.

Strange how he never brought up Leonard Peltier when he met with the POTUS. Oh yeah one is a white Xian and the othe is aboriginal.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/china-canada-companies-deal-1.3744036

Chinese and Canadian firms signed 56 deals worth more than $1.2 billion at a ceremony on Thursday, Canadian Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland said in Shanghai.

Freeland said Canada could be a great partner for China, but Ottawa officials are "taking our time" over a free trade agreement.

Chinese premier Li Keqiang said at a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday that both countries had agreed to start feasibility talks on a free trade pact at an early date.

The deals signed on Thursday involve companies in sectors from seafood to clean technologies, the trade minister said ahead of a speech by Trudeau.

I agree that Trudeau deserves no praise. Nevertheless he is getting it. Hoping that ranting about his broken promises will weaken him isn't going to work because he wasn't elected on the details. The only thing that has potential to work (in my opinion) is going after the trade deals.

Trudeau was elected on image. Tarring that image with reality has always been a good way to bring down a Liberal politician.

Yes, but if you're someone who warms to all the "Canada is back!!" rhetoric put forth by the Liberals, you're going to assume a priori that Garratt was released because...Canada is back!! Not because Harper had also lobbied China for years, or because Trudeau said the right things about Kinder Morgran, or China is hoping to get a new extradition treaty with Canada, or whatever other plausible factors could be discussed. Realpolitik doesn't enter into the equation for people like that.

Long and the short, while I agree that this isn't really much of a testimony to Trudeau's foreign-policy brilliance(or at least, no more than the release of John Greyson was a tribute to Harper's), it's probably gonna be pretty easy to spin it that way to most of the people who voted for him.

From Bono's remarks to the Canadian Prime Minister:

“Development assistance, or foreign aid as you call it here, is a really good way of showing who you are to the rest of the world,” the Irish singer told fans and reporters gathered outside the Peace Tower. I actually want to thank Canada for its generosity, particularly to vulnerable women and children. It’s amazing work that you’re doing. I always say, ‘the world needs more Canadas.’”

so Bono said this before the election even?

"The world needs more Canadas" has been a standing line of Bono's for years. First tme I remember him saying it was at the Liberal leadership convention in 2003 that elected Paul Martin leader. But it may pre-date that. And he used it through the Harper years as an affirmation of the Conservative aid agenda on maternal and child health.

^^ Google "Bono Jesse Helms" and "Bone George W. Bush" to find more of the same, roughly.

And I don't really blame Bono for this. He's lobbying on behalf of African aid, and if certain people in power are willing to go along with him, at least to an extent, it would be pretty bad strategy to reply "Well, thanks for the aid, but you're still a goddam fascist scumbag anyway".

That said, the point remains that you shouldn't read too much into the fact that a particular politician has been praised by Bono.
