Bad omen for the Chump!

This elementary school has correctly predicted every presidential election since 1968

The Democratic presidential hopeful won with 52 percent (277 votes) compared to Republican rival Donald Trump with 43 percent (230 votes).

Thanks for pointing out this article...but as activists we must look on the positive side...all these examples point to an urgent need for radical change!
Here in Canada we must examine and challenge the validity of our democratic process, we must challenge the right of the oligarch`s media to offer information to the voters....fiture elections must not take place until some major changes are to take place......

and again to assure this....our recent election mist be challenged as the fraud it was, in the federal Courts....first step!

slate.com has a feature today in which they use turnout counts from specific counties combined with polling data to predict what the vote counts are for each candidate, up to the present time. Of the 7 swing states they cover, 5 are close, but Clinton is leading them all, and is surprisingly far ahead in Florida and well ahead in Wisconsin.

NorthReport

This presidential election is not close, has not been volatile pollwise, and has never been that close. The Democrats will easily take the Presidency, will retake the Senate, but unfortunately not the House. The overriding question tonite will be how big a margin Hillary will win by.

Democrats go down to defeat in the Florida Senate election. Serves them right for what they did to Alan Greyson.

Aristotleded24

Russ Feingold looks like he loses Wisconsin, and Misty Snow looks like she's losing Utah. Indications right now that the Republicans will take all elected bodies.

What a bad night.Frown

The only thing good to come out of the night is that California legalized marijuana. It will be interesting to seee how the Trump presidency will deal with the states curently with legal weed.

I knew Americans were stupid but they just elected a TV reality star whose running mate was an open mouth radio host. America will now be ruled by InfoWar stars.Unbelievable.

Democracy in action. Perhaps the chumps are the ones who underestimated both the candidate and the depth of anger in the American electorate?

Aristotleded24

Minnesota has not been called yet. That is a bad sign, since Minnesota is a left-leaning state that last went Republican in 1972 and was the only state that never supported Reagan.

If these results hold, it will be a worse result than when Gore lost in 2000.

Only positive is that it looks like Trump will lose the popular vote. So like 2000, the person who came in second in total votes becomes president.

The popular vote on a national level doesn't matter.  The US system was intentionally designed to ensure that is the case.

BTW - 2000 was not the first time someone lost the popular vote but won the Presidency.

As for the popular vote according the the latest numbers in the NYT the split is 47.6% for Hillary and 47.5% for Trump.  The numbers there translate to Hillary winning the popular vote by approximately 125,000 votes (Johnson got that many in Florida alone).

About a third of the west coast ballots haven't been counted. And it will take several days to do so. After that you'll see her lead expand. And Johnson voters were by and large conservative. No accident that as he dropped Trump increased.

While her lead may expand it's not going to be reflected in the electoral college.

One question - anyone know if the military vote and other overseas ballots have been counted yet?

Here's an interesting article which claims that "Donald Trump Won Because of Facebook".

Max Read wrote:
The most obvious way in which Facebook enabled a Trump victory has been its inability (or refusal) to address the problem of hoax or fake news. Fake news is not a problem unique to Facebook, but Facebook’s enormous audience, and the mechanisms of distribution on which the site relies — i.e., the emotionally charged activity of sharing, and the show-me-more-like-this feedback loop of the news feed algorithm — makes it the only site to support a genuinely lucrative market in which shady publishers arbitrage traffic by enticing people off of Facebook and onto ad-festooned websites, using stories that are alternately made up, incorrect, exaggerated beyond all relationship to truth, or all three. (To really hammer home the cyberdystopia aspect of this: A significant number of the sites are run by Macedonian teenagers looking to make some scratch.)

All throughout the election, these fake stories, sometimes papered over with flimsy “parody site” disclosures somewhere in small type, circulated throughout Facebook: The Pope endorses TrumpHillary Clinton bought $137 million in illegal armsThe Clintons bought a $200 million house in the Maldives. Many got hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of shares, likes, and comments; enough people clicked through to the posts to generate significant profits for their creators. The valiant efforts of Snopes and other debunking organizations were insufficient; Facebook’s labyrinthine sharing and privacy settings mean that fact-checks get lost in the shuffle. Often, no one would even need to click on and read the story for the headline itself to become a widely distributed talking point, repeated elsewhere online, or, sometimes, in real life. (Here’s an in-the-wild sightingof a man telling a woman that Clinton and her longtime aide Huma Abedin are lovers, based on “material that appeared to have been printed off the internet.”)

Clinton's popular vote lead will continue to grow. Here's why.

Obama was great in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre; he won the two counties there by 27 and 5 points, respectively. Clinton won one by 3 and lost the other by 20 points. It was counties like these — where Obama was strong among white working-class voters — that decided this election.

Millions Call on Electors to Support Clinton, Who Is Winning Popular Vote by 2 Million

November 14, 2016 Headlines

More demonstrations are being planned for the coming days, including a massive Women’s March on Washington on January 21—the day after Trump’s scheduled inauguration. More than 4 million people have also signed on to a petition calling on the electors of the Electoral College to cast their ballots not for Donald Trump but for Hillary Clinton, who is now projected to have won the popular vote by as many as 2 million more votes than Donald Trump. Clinton is the second Democratic presidential candidate in recent history to lose the Electoral College despite winning the popular vote—and she’s projected to win the popular vote by an even greater margin than Al Gore did in 2000 against George W. Bush.

Is that how the Electoral College was meant to work?  Is that how most Americans were told it works?

Because it's a bit like Cleveland's baseball fans asking MLB to award the World Series title to Cleveland on the grounds that they scored more doubles, or whatever.

Also, just speaking really bluntly here, if Trump had lost the EC and won the popular vote, I really, genuinely and honestly doubt that these same people would petition the EC to give the Presidency to Trump.  Anyone who thinks they would (on principle) please say.

The answer to your first question is arguably yes, the founders feared that if they simply left the presidency up to popular vote the people might elect an unqualified demagogue, so they put in the electoral college as an intermediary against the masses. Ironically, of course, this time the demagogue got fewer popular votes but won more pledged electors.

The answer to your second question, though,is almost certainly not. Still, if there was any election where there was even a possibility the EC would step up to play its originally intended role, this would be it. I think one of the reasons why Trump has been on his "best" behavior since the election is not just because he is trying to be a graceful winner, but also because he knows there is still at least a theoretical threat to his finally grasping the prize.

Electors can vote for whomever they want. And no, in your scenario they would not. But Trump supporters would. Along with calling the election rigged.

And there is this movement to get enough states which make up 270 electors to pass laws requiring their state's electors to vote for the candidate who won the popular vote.

josh

The total vote has now passed 2012's total.  And Clinton leads by nearly a million.

josh

Current popular vote:

Clinton 62,466,405

Trump 61,326,238

josh

Clinton now up a full 1.0% in the popular vote. A 1,340,000 lead.

josh

But overall, she delivered a dominant performance in most urban centers and many affluent white-collar suburbs. She held Trump to less than one-fourth of the vote in such mega-counties as Manhattan, Cook (Chicago), and Los Angeles; expanded on Obama's margins in growing Sunbelt cities such as Miami, Charlotte, and Houston; and utterly routed Trump in thriving new economy centers like Austin, Silicon Valley, and Seattle. At latest tally, Clinton won the nation's 100 largest counties by fully 12.6 million votes—an historic lead certain to widen with many more West Coast ballots yet to count.

such regressive politics...whew! Yes let´s let the cities run the system! screw the rural peoples on the land! Destroy their lands and natural rsources for our benefit, because we have the majority! Whew!

iyraste1313

in places like Toothpick, Mississippi.......

yes you are exposing your urban elitism!

of course presently the rural peoples are stuck in colonialist mentality, dependent on oligarch destruction of their land and ecology for their survival......precisely why we need a serious political movement, cultural, social economic and technologic to offer a viable alternative to the people on the land presently subject to the power and tyranny of the urban elites and their head offices of bankers and ecocidalists!

You do realize that the Republican's strongest base of support is in predominantly rural states, eh? And with some notable exceptions, I don't think anyone is standing up to threats of withdrawing federal funding, and declaring safe space for immigrants, refugees and LGBT people in places like Toothpick, Mississippi.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2016/11/15/this-ind...

The gay slur they don't mention in the article is: "Fag Church". In a CBC interview last night the minister said part of the reason why they are keeping it is to let the community know they are not ashamed, and that their church is a safe space.

But sure, this is all about evil urban dwellers imposing their will on rural people.

6079_Smith_W

I grew up in the country, iyraste, which is why I know this line of thinking is nonsense.

Is there an urban bias against rural people? Yes. Did it play out in this election win? Not in the least, except that they were successfully bamboozled by a city slicker, just like they get flim flammed into voting against their own interests in pretty much everything:

Want to hear what some rural voices are saying here in Canada? God Bless Trump. This from the guy who refused to show up for Steinbach Pride:
