I believe there's a whole history of nonsense regarding USA's foreign policy surrounding Syria. During the Reagan years various acts of terrorism that most believed originated from Syria resulted in the USA targeting Libya instead (since Libya was an easier and more isolated target than Syria). A fiction that was more of a PR move on Reagan's part than anything else. Of course, regarding fictions, I hear Putin propagates these aplenty. If Trump and Putin become pals, it will more than ever become harder to know what's real and what isn't, I predict.
