The tenuous ceasefire across Syria - not including the "beloved" head-choppers of ISIS and Al Qaeda that the Gulf autocracies and Western regimes sponsor - looks to be slowly spreading and holding. This is very, very good news.

The neo-cons in the USA must be apoplectic with rage. And some "leftists" that, somehow, find themselves always agreeing with them.

CONFIRMED: Syrian ceasefire in place

If this shocking peace continues, I rather expect sudden stories of cruelties to babies in incubators, yellow cake powder, "clear and present dangers" sprouting up like dandelions in the backyard, etc., etc. in the Western MSM. And dutifully regurgitated here.

Quote:
Speaking about what this means, the Russian president said: “This agreement we’ve reached is very fragile, as we all understand. It requires special attention and patience, professional attitude, and constant contact with our partners.”

ETA: Oh look. More shelling of the Russian Embassy in Damascus.

NewsLine RT wrote:
Russian embassy in Syria shelled from rebel-held area

Russia’s embassy in Damascus was shelled again on Thursday evening, it said in a statement. The firing came from a rebel-controlled neighborhood of the Syria capital, the embassy said, adding the the shells caused minor damage to the mission. The statement said the attack was apparently meant to derail an attempt to establish a comprehensive ceasefire in the country brokered by Russia, Turkey and Iran.

I'm sure it was "just a mistake" by the moderate head-choppers. They would never, you know ...

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Details of the agreement (still not public entirely)

Quote:
The first was signed by the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition to stop hostilities in the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic. The second one is a set of measures to control the ceasefire. The third document is a declaration of intention for Syrian settlement,” the Russian president said.

The agreement is the result of joint efforts by Russia, Turkey, and Iran, the president said.

Great work has been done in cooperation with our partners from Turkey. We know that only recently there was a trilateral meeting in Moscow of the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey, and Iran, where all of the nations made obligations not only to control, but also to act as guarantors of the peace process in Syria.

The truce is supported by seven major armed opposition groups that have over 60,000 fighters in their ranks, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released a list of the groups that have pledged to stop fighting, which includes Faylaq Al-Sham, Ahrar al-Sham, Jaysh al-Islam, Thuwar al-Sham, Jaysh al-Muwahhideen, Jaysh Idlib and Jabhat al-Shamiyah.

The minister said under the deal any armed group that refuses to cease hostilities would be considered a legitimate target for the use of force, as is the case with terrorist groups Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front, which are not included in the truce.

Shoigu added that if the agreement holds, it would allow Russia to scale down its military presence in Syria.

This last must be particularly galling to the Americans. They've done a "VietNam-ization " strategy in the past (Russia in Afghanistan - Zbig Brzezinski still gloats about it) and to see talk of reducing the Russian presence in Syria must really "chap their asses".

Comments from the US regime and the UN louts that have been sabotaging peace efforts so far are entirely predictable. "A change in administration" is the sort of phraseology, to replace "Assad must go". Talk of discussion in Geneva, that, e.g., excludes key players like Iran, is "next", etc.

Well, give them credit for trying. But have they been schooled, OMFG. Even the brutal assassination of the Russian Ambassador at an art gallery didn't slow down these peace efforts by Russia. It's simply outstanding on their part.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

OK, so the US regime and its satellites, UN toadies, etc., have switched tack and now want to see:

1. US involvement ASAP. That means Geneva negotiations, fuggetabout the negots in Astana, XYZ, and let's get back to excluding the Iranians just like the apoplectic Israeli leadership insists;

2. Partitition of Syria in a "federation". This is more complicated as even the Russians talked to the Syrians about something along these lines at one point. However, the US regime, etc., simply want a toe-hold so they can "assist" a new, rump statelet carved out of Syria, a nice little baby caliphate, some sort of Kurdish statelet requiring US "intervention" etc., etc. ... you get the idea.

This all is Plan "B". None of it will happen, natch, but that won't stop the Western barbarians from making noisy demands and threatening anyone who doesn't compliment them on these, their most recent flatulent emanations.

Between the two of them, Murdoch and Rothschild have a 5.5 percent stake in the company, though both are on the advisory board. The controlling shareholder is Howard Jonas.

From an article in The Economist re: Genie Energy (Nov. 7, 2015)

Black gold under the Golan

Quote:
...An influential group is now lobbying Israel’s government to take advantage of the chaos in Syria and demand international recognition of its control of 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) on the Golan. The group includes Zvi Hauser, a former cabinet secretary to the prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, who has urged that Israel should demand this as a compensation for having to tolerate the nuclear agreement with Iran.

It is not clear whether Genie shares this objective, but if it chose to, it would be no surprise. Genie’s founder and CEO is Howard Jonas, an influential American-Jewish businessman. The president of Genie’s Israeli subsidiary is Effie Eitam, a Golan settler and a former general who is close to the prime minister. And in America Genie has increased its clout. In September it added some influential new members to an advisory board that already included a former vice-president, Dick Cheney, and a media tycoon, Rupert Murdoch. One was Larry Summers, who was treasury secretary in the Clinton administration and director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama. Also added were two other Clinton-era appointees: Bill Richardson, an ex-ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary, and James Woolsey, a former CIA director.

Not sure whether this qualifies as 'banging the old drum'...

Clearly they can do what they want Rev, and the reason why they put him front and centre even though it isn't his company, and he only owns a small percentage of it, is as a tip of the hat to the old International Jewish Conspiracy.

Yes, there is every reason to expect a renewed full court press on Iran. The presence of people like Woolsey, Bolton, Sheldon Adelson and other ardent Zionists in the Trump camp, strongly suggest that the Israeli agenda will most certainly continue in US foreign policy. This will obviously impact Syria [and Russia] as well. Probably worthwhile to remember Wesley Clark's '7 countries in 5 years' revelation, or the Oden Yinon plan for a 'Greater Israel'.

Oden Yinon was described by analyst Mahdi Nazemroaya in 2011, as "an Israeli strategic plan to ensure Israeli regional superiority. It insisted and stipulated Israel must reconfigure its geo-political environment through the Balkanization of the surrounding Arab states into smaller and weaker states.' There's lots to rehash.  Offcom is hardly a disinterested regulator. Nor do I share your 'fake news' description.  Nor is it the first time BBC got 'creative' in its Syria coverage.  As Marco di Lauro of Getty Images opined after his 2003 photo of Iraqi dead was ''faked' by the Beeb to supposedly portray a Syrian massacre:

"What is amazing is that a news organization has a picture proving a massacre that happened yesterday in Syria and instead it's a picture that was taken in 2003 of a totally different massacre."

Well, actually it was bulshit because most of the things he promised he has now revealed were lies.

As for the reset with Russia, I suppose you could say a new arms race is a reset, but he didn't mention it during the campaign.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

You gotta hand it to Obama, though. Making all those weapons available to the "moderate" head-choppers at the last moment, manfully expelling Russian diplomats and their families right at Christmas, helping with Ministry of Truth legislation and a $20 million slush fund to back it up .... are solid signs that his term in office will end with a bang and not a whimper.

Did he? Not saying you are wrong; I just hadn't heard him say he wanted a new arms race.

He has talked about increasing military presence in the South China Seas. He refused to rule out the use of nukes in the middle east or against Europe. He did say other nations should have nukes, and that the U.S. arsenal was falling into disrepair, but I hadn't heard him explicitly say he wanted to get into a new arms race.

That was a very interesting piece. Very pro-government but then that is what the majority of Syrians have become. I suspect that in Canada we would put our differences aside and the vast majority would back a government of any stripe that authorized the military and the RCMP to use lethal force if our cities were under attack by foreign backed terrorists and a violent dissident group armed by foreign governments.

The same subset of people in Canada who are cheering on "moderates" to commit acts of violence against their fellow citizens also freak out when a Black Bloc person throws a rock through a window.

Indeed like our PM he seems to have lied about anything that he thought would get him elected. That doesn't change the fact that different lies influenced different voters.  Both the Donald and the Prince of Selfies stood in front of the cameras and lied through their teeth. Strangely after getting elected they also both appointed the same type of advisors from the same class of people.  They both pretended to be men of the people and when elected they showed their privileged roots and connections.

I don't really see anyone cheering for Trump not even people like me who really dislike Clinton.  In places like Syria we will soon see whether the American rulers let Trump change direction in foreign policy. It would be a great thing for the people of Syria if he ordered all the various US agencies and military "advisors" to leave the country immediately. However the real rulers of the US seem to pushing for regime change followed by chaos. Hilary would be sabre rattling over Syria if she was President elect rather than letting the potential for peace unfold.

I despise Clinton, Obama, and the Democrats generally, as well as Putin, and authoritarians generally, and I am not in any way cheering for Trump. While the Aleppo operation has been a turning point in the Syrian armed conflict, the White House is still in a hurry to provide maximum support to the so-called “moderate opposition” in Syria, but now it’s clear for pretty much everyone that Washington is assisting ISIS. Last December alone Turkish bloggers spotted the passage of three large cargo ships through the Bosporus Strait, presumably carrying arms for the Syrian rebels. In particular, in mid-December a freighter Karina Danica left Bulgarian shore, while heading to Saudi Jeddah with weapons on board, reports Bosphorus Observer on Twitter. This data is confirmed by a specialized tracking site known as MarineTraffic. It is a well known fact that the freighter Karina Danica is a Danish vessel, chartered by the American company Cherming, which is the official supplier of non-standard NATO weapons for the US “allies” in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. It’s curious that the Bulgarian Vazovski Machine-Building Plant that sells weapons to Cherming, increased its sales by 12 times in 2016, making a profit of 170 million dollars.

What makes this whole arms supplies story awkward is the scandal that broke out in 2015, when the Chairman of the Iraqi Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security, Hakim Zamili asked PM Haider al-Abadi to intervene immediately to stop the 300 million dollars worth ammunition deal that with Romanian weapons being delivered to ISIS directly, while financed by one of the neighboring countries. In 2016, the director of the Conflict Armament Research, James Bevan stated that the weapons from Eastern Europe that were officially designated for the so-called “moderate opposition” are falling in extremist hands.

The decision to supply anti-government troops in Syria with all sorts of weapons, including MANPADS, that was signed by President Barack Obama on December 23, may lead to the further escalation of the Syrian conflict and new victims.

So there’s more than enough reasons for Ankara’s resentment of the Obama administration, since it is directly responsible for every single Turkish soldiers murdered by radical militants.

In the meantime, people have to abandon their egos and unite in search of connections—for true unity. One has to fight every kind of interference between countries. One has to fight the fact that the money of the great powers supports international terrorism. The aggressions against the Syrian people are financed by the West. You cannot allow that! 'I call on our bothers the Israelis to support the revolution in Syria, and provide us with everything, weapons, food, aid...anything brothers. You Israel must attack the Syrian Army and help us defeat this 'infidel regime', he added.
