How Most of the US [/ Canadian - 'White Helmets for Nobel Prize'] Left Failed Syria

A more lengthy quote from the "failure of the left" piece above ...

Quote:
I think that one major problem is that those who happen to be the loudest and have the largest platforms on the left have romanticized the idea of revolution and projected their own fantasies onto what is actually a horror show of death, destruction and chaos. It's easy to cheer an armed revolt from halfway across the world, especially when you're not directly impacted by it. It's especially stunning to see so many Western leftists cheer on armed revolt by right-wing fanatics who kill minorities just because their opponent is a dictator. I think the misguided glorification of armed revolution is a big part of that. ...

At the end of the day, I think the U.S. left failed Syria. As U.S.-backed jihadists invaded Syrian neighborhoods, imposed a reign of terror and tried to force state collapse, many segments of the U.S. left cheered the armed groups and ignored their victims.

Astana, Kazakhstan is the site for upcoming peace talks wrt Syria. With the involvement of both the Russians and Turks, and the absence of the US regime's representatives, there are modest hopes for success.

High Hopes for Astana Talks 23 Jan, 2017

Yet another barbarous air strike from the brutal Israeli regime, an act of war that helps the terrorists, has not seemed to slow down the preparations for the talks. Undoubtedly, this attack had the full support of the outgoing odious Obama regime. Israel has been carrying out indiscriminate attacks on Syria for many years - long before the current NATO and Gulf autocracy sponsored terrorists tried to overthrow the legitimate UN-recognized, democratically-elected government of Syria. So, in a sense, it is nothing new. Simpy a message from the Apartheid authorities in Tel Aviv ... "We can attack you anytime we like. And we will. "

Lavrov Believes US Wanted To Use IS, Jabhat al Nusra To Overthrow Assad

"There are lots of examples showing that the Americans and their allies sneakily wanted to use al Nusra and the IS to weaken and finally overthrow the Assad regime,' the top diplomat says."

'Aleppo Liberated, Media Disappears,' Syrians Neglected by MSM

Notice, no msm dogwhistle, no more attention or liberal crocodile tears for Syrians. Why no aid from Canada, only retention of punishing siege and starvation-inducing sanctions,( supported by the NDP). And collaboration with the strategy articulated by Lavrov above. History will show Canada supported a monstrous regime-change operation of incalculable consequences.

""Today, Russian and Turkish Air Forces are carrying out their first joint operation to target ISIL in the suburbs of the town of al-Bab in the Aleppo province," Sergey Rudskoy, chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff, said at a briefing on Wednesday."

The news is not all good, however.

Quote:
At the same time, the Russian military is involved in a separate operation against Islamic terrorists in Syria, assisting the Syrian Army in eastern Deir ez-Zor province to fend off the militants' recent large-scale offensive, Rudskoy said.
The jihadists there are using their numerical superiority and are constantly attacking Syrian forces that are defending civilians in Deir ez-Zor, according to the military official. If the terrorists manage to capture the city, "a real genocide awaits its citizens," Rudskoy said, adding that "the whole Deir ez-Zor population might be completely exterminated."
So far, Syrian government forces in the city, supported by the Russian Air Force,  have managed to resist the IS assault, he said, describing the situation in Deir ez-Zor as "difficult."

Mind you, Westerners who are indifferent or even gloat over the death of Syrian civilians might be pleased at the prospect. It's remarkable that, now that the jihadists have been driven out of Aleppo, the "concern" in the West for civilian deaths in Syria has, well, dropped to near zero. (See previous entry) Even Russian military commanders have commented on this.

Quote:
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he believed US and UN representatives should be invited to the meeting, aiming to finally find a solution to the Syrian crisis, but Iran reportedly rejects any participation by American representatives.

lol. This has really got to bunch up American underwear. Feel the discomfort. But what else is there? The Obama regime has been sponsoring terrorists, and pretending they're not, and Hilary could almost taste the "Veni, vidi, vici" that she was undoubtedly practicing in front of the mirror, and used with much gravitas, and practiced laughter, at least once before. But those durned barbarians! I mean ... Rooskies ... just foiled everything! There must be SOMEONE she can bomb! sniff.

So, Turkey and Russia working together, and Iran says "na" to US participation. The horror. Peace might just break out. And wouldn't that just be phucking awful, huh, Uncle Sam?

Tulsi Gabbard, Dennis Kucinich Travel To Syria On Fact Finding, Peace MissionTOPICS:Brandon TurbevilleMilitaryPeaceSyria

while I congratulate these delegates on their latest peace mission fact finding tour, and again congratulating the US Peace Council who has done the same...one can only wonder what ever happened to the Canada antiwar movement...why has no such delegation from Canada ever done such an obviously important move?

Some serious investigation of who and what´s going down with our Peace movement is in order!

From AP via the Guardian:

I tried to post the picture, but no go. However, here's a link

Pro-government supporters in Aleppo

I don't think one can deny that a significant portion of the Syrian population support the government. At least, they would rather have the Assad government than the jihadist option.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

That sort of evidence, from such an antagonistic source as The Guardian, is useful.

However, the simple truth that hundreds? thousands? of Syrians have laid down their lives to defend their country against the [mostly] foreign fighters is also powerful evidence as well, known about for a long time, and blithely ignored by those who re-gurgitate the Western narrative on Syria.

RT puts out documentaries on a regular basis and they just did one on Syrian war vets. It was just heart-rending. This heroic people, worthy of our unrestrained support are, instead, fed a rich diet of terror, funded by the NATO states and the Gulf autocracies, sanctioned as well (by Canada) when under such attack, and their brave stories do not appear in the MSM here in the West.

We are impoverished by that.

Are you purposefully forgetting that there are more than two sides fighting in Syria? It sure looks like it....

hard to believe you really believe this...check out the recent visit by Congresswoman from Hawaii to Syria...the rebel groups have long been allied together under the command of the most vicious terrorists, the so called moderates acting as a channel to pass weaponry to the most vicious dominant...

I´m sorry but it´s hard to take anyone seriouisly if they actually belive this and do not recognize that the terrorists are just a tool, a patsy of the higher forces....wasn´t it Seymour Hersch back in 2007, who warned of this development?

The Civil War in Syria: A Case Study in Propaganda (podcast)

Thanks for the podcast link.  Here's the article by Rick Sterling that is referenced.

Quote:

Analysis of the Syrian conflict boils down to two competing narratives. One narrative is that the conflict is a fight for freedom and democracy against a brutal regime, a storyline promoted in the West and the Gulf states, which have been fueling the conflict from the start. This narrative is also favored by some self-styled “anti-imperialists” who want a “Syrian revolution.”

The other narrative is that the conflict is essentially a war of aggression against a sovereign state, with the aggressors including NATO countries, Gulf monarchies, Israel and Jordan. Domination of the Western media by these powerful interests is so thorough that one almost never gets access to this second narrative, which is essentially banned from not only the mainstream but also much of the liberal and progressive media.

Here is an on the ground account of the Syrian war including inAleppo. The Christian community in Syria is around 10% of the population. Every area that the "freedom fighters" have controlled has seen them treated brutally. The Western media reports about East Aleppo are lies or alternate truths if you like. The Syrian Army liberated the inhabitants of the city and drove out the foreign terrorists.

I cheered the liberation and hope it comes to more of the areas controlled by the Islamic terrorists.

Quote:

Interviewer: You are very critical of the media coverage on Syria. What is bothering you?

Father Daniel: “The idea that a popular uprising took place against President Assad is completely false. I’ve been in Qara since 2010 and I have seen with my own eyes how agitators from outside Syria organized protests against the government and recruited young people. That was filmed and aired by Al Jazeera to give the impression that a rebellion was taking place. Murders were committed by foreign terrorists, against the Sunni and Christian communities, in an effort to sow religious and ethnic discord among the Syrian people. While in my experience, the Syrian people were actually very united.

Before the war, this was a harmonious country: a secular state in which different religious communities lived side by side peacefully. There was hardly any poverty, education was free, and health care was good. It was only not possible to freely express your political views. But most people did not care about that.”

From a few years ago here is the same type of Christian viewpoint.

Quote:

It's not just clergy who find themselves in harm's way. In June, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land reported that a cluster of Christian villages along Syria's Orontes River had been almost totally destroyed in the fighting, forcing thousands into hiding.

"Of the 4,000 inhabitants of the village of Ghassanieh, as just one example, the local pastor reports that no more than 10 people remain," said Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, director of the custody, adding that bombs had also seriously damaged a Franciscan monastery in Knayeh near the border with Lebanon.

As NCR went to press, a Greek-Catholic monastery in Qara was under assault by rebel forces. Officials of the Norbertine order told Vatican Radio they had lost contact with a 74-year-old Belgian missionary, Daniel Maes, living at the monastery.

In a July 1 opinion piece on National Review Online, religious freedom activist Nina Shea charged that a "shadow war" is being waged against Syria's Christians. Shea pointed to the death of Murad and the fact that Islamist groups have begun setting up Shariah courts in areas of Syria under their control, charging Christians with a variety of alleged offenses under Muslim law.

In that context, some Syrian Christians have issued warnings about Western policies of arming Syria's opposition.

"I would like everyone to know that the West, in supporting the revolutionaries, is supporting religious extremists and helping to kill Christians," Fr. Halim Noujaim, the Franciscans' regional minister for Syria and Lebanon, said after the execution of Murad.

"As many as 13,000 people, most of them civilian opposition supporters, have been executed in secret at a prison in Syria", Amnesty International says.

Assad apologists: "But everyone in Syria loves the President! The only rebels are soldiers from away".

Well, duuuuh. So what could possibly have happened to the civilian opposition in Syria?

Sound of trapdoor opening....
