Killings at Québec City mosque

I'm putting this news flash here for the moment, though moderators should feel free to move it to anti-racism or any other relevant topic as news comes in:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-city-mosque-gun-shots-1.39... Evidently several people have been killed and others wounded, and two suspects have been arrested.

So far the terrorists who have done this yelled 'Allahu Akbar' in a heavy québecois accent. 5 dead reported so far.

We have not been targeted by terrorism by muslims, targeting them for a mass murder doesn't make sense. I hope the suspects are caught and are hanged in public at Place D'Youville or something.

This is not Belgium or France, this act was senseless. Question is,will there be retribution? Congratulations you right wing shitstains for destroying our peaceful nation.

The CBC had some interesting material today about the rise of the extreme right in the thirties We are going to have to be vigilant to ensure it does not happen again

I stand fully with what alan said there.

Awful. It appears that Trumpism has bled across the border. Or instigated existing xenophobia.

Another case of men with mental issues attacking the innocent and defenceless, it is very sad and disappointing that 6 people had to die in this horrible attack.

I got this from twitter from a friend, not sure how accurate it is.

The two suspects are Bashir al-Tweed and Hassan Matti both recently from Syria.

Is this a case of Sunni Islam and Shia Islam attacking each other?

josh

Could be.  Has happened before.  But if they're recently from Syria, why would they have a heavy québecois accent?

lagatta4

This remains to be seen. Definitely some kind of far-right attack: we remember that the vast majority of victims of Islamist terror are Muslims (just as the vast majority of victims of Christianist terror are Christians). The question is whether they are the homegrown far-right or from afar.

I don't think there is any more reason for such an attack in France or Belgium, actually.

Unionist and others who live here, there will be a vigil at the park between the Mosque and the Provigo le marché (formerly Loblaws), métro Parc of course or the 80 bus for many people. I don't have the time yet; I imagine that it will be announced on Radio-Canada and CBC and certainly over the net. I'll post more details when I find them.

My condoleances to the friends and family of the victims and to all the members of the mosque and those who are Muslim or of Muslim backgrounds targeted by this hate crime. Fuck all violent far-right thugs, whatever their ethnicity or purported religion.

I never suggested Belgium or France deserved an attack. I was implying that if white nationalists/supremecists were to commit a terrorist attack on a Mosque,I can understand the motivation in those countries as they have suffered some major terror attacks perpetrated by radical Islamist. We have not, hence there is no reason for any type of retribution. It was completely senseless.

Stop putting words in my mouth. It's starting to piss me off. Thanks.

Caissa

Do we have any evidence that this was terrorism?

josh

The two men arrested following the deadly shooting at a Quebec City mosque Sunday night are Alexandre Bissonnette and Mohamed Khadir, Radio-Canada has learned.

There was an interview with a journalist who was retiring from covering the Québec National Assembly on Radio-Canada, and he mentioned the names of the two suspects under arrest. One was a name typical of the Maghreb, the other a very common francophone Québécois name. Both were men, aged from late 20s to early 30s

Edited to make a slight correction: I misheared the surname of one of the suspects; it wasn't a name restricted to the Maghreb, but Khadir. As we know, QS MNA Amir Khadir is of Iranian origin, but it could be a name of Arabic origin borne by anyone of a Muslim culture.

This is just awful.

The Canadian and Quebec Prime Ministers have called the shootings terrorism, and the Crown is investigating them as a terrorist offence, according to the CBC.

The vigil here is at 6pm, well, basically when most people get out of work. There are other vigils elsewhere in Québec, in Canada and in other countries.

Now, the police are saying one is a suspect and one is a witness. But not which is which.

Hurtin Albertan

And now only one of them is considered by police as a suspect, the other one is apparantly just a witness.

I'd copy and paste a link but I can't do that from this computer for some reason.

The Montreal Gazette website where I found the story didn't say which one is the suspect and which one is the witness.

I will refrain from further comments until more information gets released.  Speculation is pretty much pointless at this point.

My heartfelt condolences to the victims, their friends and families.  Seems to have been an excellent response from the local police for the most part.

So were did the stories of two masked gunmen come from?

Reports from Quebec media, including La Presse, TVA, and Radio Canada, say that Alexandre Bissonnette is the lone person suspected in the shooting.

Surprise, surprise. A right wing twit. It's funny that he was angry about the death of the soldier from Val-Cartier. The person who killed him wasn't even a muslim but a confused white Québecois de souche. And big surprise,he is a fan of Martine Le Pen.

I think Canada should refuse entrance to people like Le Pen who just incite hatred and violence. She was recently in Canada, meanwhile George Galloway is banned. Brilliant.

Time for this country to ban far right nationalist nutjobs from entering this country. Period.

ETA; The CPC should shun Kellie Leitch who is Canada's Le Pen. If they don't,their words today is just a bunch of crap blown out their asses.

Thnks & congratulations to both of you on closing this civilly. Disproves the notion that no one will ever aplogise - maybe they will if it's requested in a friendly way rather than demanded?

I was myself on the point  of criticising the "France or Belgium" comment.

CBC was reporting two suspects earlier, also saying the second one had made a phone call volunteering to be arrested on a bridge somewhere. This kind of premature reporting that later gets amended (without apology or even explanation) seems to have been increasing over the last few years. Is "social media" to blame? They could at least name the source of the "information" if it hasn't been verified. "CBC has learned...." isn't enough.

Michael Stewart Michael Stewart's picture

In wake of Quebec mosque attack, Canadian conservatives must take long, hard look at their Islamophobic rhetoric

It is the demagogues of our time who may be particularly to blame.  MP Kellie Leitch is one apt example that comes to mind.  In 2015, Leitch was the front-woman for the Harper government's "barbaric practices tip line," which falsely but implicitly suggested that Canadian Muslims maintain practices which are already illegal under Canadian law, like forced marriages and honour killings.  Now as a Conservative leadership candidate, Leitch has upped the ante in her anti-Muslim rhetoric by calling for the screening of "immigrants, refugees, and visitors" for "anti-Canadian values."

Leitch was part of a Harper government which stoked anti-Muslim sentiment for years.  For example, Harper consistently played off the danger of extremist Islamic terror, stating in 2011 that "Islamicism" was the biggest threat facing Canada.  As one critic put it at the time, "Harper never loses a chance to invoke the spectre of Islamist terrorism."

One high visibility manifestation of Harper's anti-Muslim bias was his decision to block Muslim refugees from receiving asylum in Canada.  Another was his attempt to prevent Muslim women from wearing the niqab during citizenship ceremonies – a case which he lost, but which dragged publicly through the courts for months.  After seeing Harper repeatedly lose this case in the courts, one commentator authored a piece, "Call the niqab issue what it is -- a shameless play for the bigot vote."

Edzell Edzell's picture

If it comes to "screening for 'anti-Canadian values'," maybe we could first have a nation-wide poll/debate to determine those values and then apply the screening to our politicians.

I did not come to babble until a few minutes ago today. I was on social media trying to respond to as many fake news posts as possible.

As it turns out I have a connection through other people to one of the victims a professor researcher. I work with scientist / researchers.

I also know diverse families including some who had very difficult conversations this weekend. How do you explain this to children who see people like them being killed in their country.

Very sad.

But these assertions are utterly false. The suspect is neither Moroccan nor Muslim. The Moroccan individual, Mohamed el Khadir, was actually one of the worshippers at the mosque and called 911 to summon the police, and played no role whatsoever in the shooting.

The actual shooting suspect is 27-year-old Alexandre Bissonnette, a white French Canadian who is, by all appearances, a rabid anti-immigrant nationalist. A leader of a local immigration rights groups, François Deschamps, told a local paper he recognized his photo as an anti-immigrant far-right “troll” who has been hostile to the group online. And Bisonnette’s Facebook page – now taken down but still archived – lists among its “likes” the far right French nationalist Marine Le Pen, Islam critics Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the Israeli Defense Forces, and Donald J. Trump (he also “likes” the liberal Canadian Party NDP along with more neutral “likes” such as Tom Hanks, the Sopranos and Katy Perry).

Three of the victims

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-city-mosque-shooting-victi...

CBC News has identified three of the six men who died in Sunday night's shooting at a Quebec City mosque as Khaled Belkacemi, a professor at Laval University, Azzedine Soufiane, the owner of a grocery store and halal butcher shop, and Boubaker Thabti, a Tunisian-born father of two.

What an absolute cowardly and henious thing to do.

As a rule I now generally wait 3 or 4 days after something like this happens to start really reading about it in order to avoid the fake news, propaganda and false-facts. Or at least wait  till they subside.

CBC initial reported two masked shooters last night, they also reported a car chase into Quebec City which also appears to be false.

The accurate of their reporting has been pretty horrible at this time, however that is a discussion for another thread.

I think that's a good personal policy.

I like to wait until Paul Craig Roberts has weighed in.  If I didn't personally witness it then it probably didn't even happen, and I can focus my concerns on hypothesising who would have the greatest interest in perpetrating a false flag.

Yes. Sadly these people are dead, but condolences to their families, friends and community. Any story about science or medicine here in Québec willl make clear the huge contribution of people from the Arab world and other Middle Eastern countries to our society and culture. Many are Muslim (in belief or background) but not all; these also include Sephardi Jews and Orthodox and other Christians. I remember my horror when a member of my co-op didn't want to shop at a grocery managed by a Lebanese family (they happen to be not only Christian but Catholic). They speak perfect French and the kids all study at Université de Montréal.

This kind of stuff in an otherwise peaceful and even boring milieu is a bit of a trigger for me, as I was writing a graduate history exam at Université de Montréal the night of the Polytechnique massacre. I never managed to finish my degrees before as I always got caught up in activism.

I have too much of a lingering cold, and missed the vigil - it is very cold tonight and I can't risk getting seriously ill. I did have the joy of crossing groups of young people marching to the vigil - it isn't very far, but standing still in the cold is a horror. One little group had a black placard with a white heart of hope atop it.

Human beings have big problems handling diversity
I remember seeing a composite sketch in the Vancouver Sun a few years ago showing what we will all look like 1,000 years from now And yes we will looking a lot more Oriental than Caucasian Seriously I can't wait
And I'm church goer but I am wondering if it is time to put an end to any kind of public displays of religion Organized Religion I suppose was needed before we started getting healthy doses of science but is it really necessary any more as for the sickos it is just another tool they use to divide us

The word oriental is Eurocentric. It defines a place as being to the East of another place. That is why we use the word Asian.
