President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, secretly worked for a Russian billionaire to advance the interests of Russian President Vladimir Putin a decade ago and proposed an ambitious political strategy to undermine anti-Russian opposition across former Soviet republics, The Associated Press has learned. The work appears to contradict assertions by the Trump administration and Manafort himself that he never worked for Russian interests.

Will Washington Risk WW3 To Block an Emerging EU-Russia Superstate   -  by Mike Whitney

http://www.counterpunch.org/2017/03/23/will-washington-risk-ww3-to-block...

"Washington is doing everything in its power to prevent Russia and Europe from merging into the world's biggest free trade zone that will be the center of global growth and prosperity for the next century.

Washington's relations with Russia will always be fractious because Russia poses a perennial threat to US ambitions to rule the world.

Washington's war against Russia is becoming increasingly militarized..."

6079_Smith_W

Russia/EU Superstate? That's a funny one.

Did he ask the European leaders about that one, or did he just straw poll Marine le Pen, Frauke Petry, Gabor Vona, and Norbert Hofer when he dropped the cheques off?

I am guessing he didn't ask the Finns, or the Poles, or anyone else who actually lives next door.

6079 Do you have any elaboration on who the "THEY" are that are responsible. Are you really trying to blame Putin for a mob style killing of a mob rat in the streets of Kiev? The article you linked had this to say.

Quote:

After Voronenkov’s move to Ukraine, Russian investigators filed fraud charges against Voronenkov in connection with his business activities.

Ukraine’s chief prosecutor, Yuriy Lutsenko, said Voronenkov was shot in the head, neck and stomach and died on the spot.

Mr Lutsenko said the gunman carried a Ukrainian passport and had been sought by the authorities on fraud and money laundering charges.

He said investigators were looking into Mr Voronenkov’s role in exposing a contraband ring in Russia which cost several senior security officers their jobs, and also his testimony on Mr Yanukovych as possible motives behind his killing.

6079_Smith_W

Well we know it can't be anyone from Russia. After all, they have told his widow she is welcome to move back there, right?

NorthReport

Ah, it's his own fault for walking into those Russian bullets.

kropotkin1951

Ukraine’s chief prosecutor, Yuriy Lutsenko and I don't know who murdered him or why, unlike the people who know it is a Russian plot just because everything is these days.  Sad to see the level of tinfoil hat conspiracy theories that pass for discourse.

Not only does Russia want to be involved in US politics but in Canadian politics as well it appears.

'School of hate': Was Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland's grandfather a Nazi collaborator?

“There’s always an element of truth in Russian propaganda,” says David Marples, a professor of Russian and Ukrainian history at the University of Alberta. “It’s never an outright lie. But this is a sign that Russia has now interfered in our affairs. And it’s an ominous sign that they’ve delved so deeply into the background of a senior Canadian leader.”

And that’s particularly worrying in light of the way Putin’s propagandists were able to manipulate the news cycle of the last American election.

April 25-26 was a holiday weekend. The plant’s director and chief engineer were absent so the deputy director conducted the experiment.

Russia and the West: A century of subversion and suspicion

The notion of Russian subversion in the West had largely subsided at the end of the Cold War - until the US election.

Now each side perceives the other as actively engaged in such activities once again.

"I have no doubt that Vladimir Putin does indeed [incorrectly] believe that the US government - probably led by the CIA - is interested in somehow running covert action which would result in regime change in Moscow," argues Steve Hall, who ran the CIA's Russia operations until he retired in 2015.

"On the West's side, I think things are a little more concrete. The US intelligence community agrees there is evidence that the Russians were indeed involved in a multi-pronged influence operation."

Perceptions matter but so does evidence.

If Moscow can be proved to have run an operation with a decisive influence in the election, then it may well be regarded as the most far-reaching act of subversion ever seen.

Babblers who are fans of Putin might be interested to know that he has now declared himself as a climate denier. Taking a position very similar to Trump and other Republicans, he says that the climate is changing, but human actions have nothing at all to do with it. How brilliant.

6079_Smith_W

Good find, Michael, though I think even our dear departed friend stopped short of outing himself as a Putin fan. Similarly,  there are no Trump supporters here, even if there are some calling out the deep state conspiracy against him.

The usual line is either that it is our job to criticize things in our own back yard, or that those on our side are arguably worse, therefore that is where our focus should be... and on Putin's opponents, who are clearly just the tools of our bad guys.

As your point illustrates, that doesn't really hold together when it is shown that those parties are two sides of the same coin. And if there are some who doubt the hacking and election interference story,  the money and power connections on the real issue - oil - should be a lot more obvious to anyone who isn't trying deliberately to look the other way.

Maybe Roger Stone, Trump's master of confusion and deceit, is involved.

kropotkin1951

Polling is such an exact science it has to be proof of Russian interference. After all there has never been a time when all the pollsters got it wrong.

"Monday's election results have some Albertans wondering about all those polls that suggested a much different outcome.

Polls had the Wildrose Party ahead for most of the Alberta election campaign, but it was the Progressive Conservatives who ended up with a comfortable majority win that underlined the wide discrepancy between the polls and the results.

The stunning win has raised questions about the reliability of polls, their ability to capture late shifts, their methodology and even their proliferation in the Alberta campaign."

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/alberta-s-election-polls-miss-the...

"Donald Trump’s surprise victory poses the question: How did we get this thing this wrong? From the myriad polls and poll aggregators, to the vaunted oracles at Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight and the New York Times’s shiny forecasting interface, most serious predictors completely misjudged Trump’s chances of victory.

Though election night had the appearance of an unlikely come-from-behind victory by Trump, that narrative only exists because virtually all predictions—perhaps even from the Trump camp—started with the assumption that Trump was an underdog. "
