California Senate Passes "Sanctuary State" Bill
The California Senate has passed the so-called sanctuary state bill, which would limit police statewide from cooperating with federal immigration agents in carrying out President Trump’s promised mass deportations. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has vowed to withhold federal law enforcement grants to so-called sanctuary cities. The bill, SB 54, now heads to the California State Assembly.

In Virginia, the word "RESIST" was spray-painted on the grass of the 13th hole at President Trump’s National Golf Club over the weekend. It’s the second time the Virginia golf course has been the site of anti-Trump protests. In October, ahead of Trump’s election, the words "Black Lives Matter" and "No justice, no peace" were spray-painted on the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.

NYC: Hundreds Rally to Protest Proposed Cuts to Arts & Humanities
And in New York City, hundreds of artists, librarians, broadcasters and museum workers gathered at City Hall Monday for a rally aimed at stopping federal cuts to the arts and humanities. President Trump’s proposed budget would eliminate funding to the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This is New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

On April 29th we will be in the streets across Canada, in solidarity with the march in Washington, DC, to show the world and our leaders that we will resist fossil fuel projects and policies that attack our people, our communities and our planet.
We will come together from across Canada to strengthen our movement and prepare for the struggles ahead. We will demonstrate our power and resistance in cities and towns across the country. We will bring our solutions to the climate crisis and the problems that affect our communities to our political leaders to demand Real Change, not broken promises and empty rhetoric.

"People's Climate Movement Canada" appears to be a web page whose sole purpose is to link to some U.S. coalition site - with English and Spanish versions. I have a problem with declaring movements into existence before actually, like, building something.

Under Activist Pressure, Portland Agrees to End All Corporate Investments
In a sweeping move that follows a wave of divestment activism in Portland, Oregon, and across the country, the Portland City Council voted last week to pull all of the city's investments in corporate bonds and securities.
The decision was a major victory for a broad coalition of activists who have pushed for the city to end its investments in corporations that have questionable records on the environment and human rights, including ties to the Dakota Access pipeline, the private prison industry and the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
"As their decision stands now, it's permanent.… We can rest assured in Portland that our money won't be funding prisons, pipelines and the occupation of Palestine," said Amanda Aguilar Shank, an organizer with the racial justice group Enlace, in an interview with Truthout....
Make May Day a day of resistance
HERE IN Seattle, the favored topic of small talk has shifted from the clouds and rain to the president and his incompetence. Students at my high school have formed relationships with teachers on that basis alone, and it seems there is no longer any political division between instructor and student. This general agreement is important for its own sake, but especially for the potential it creates.
As high school students and teachers find common ground in their opposition to Donald Trump, the two will see new opportunities to stand up for one another politically. The first such opportunity is less than a month away.
Seattle teachers recently voted on whether to strike for the day on May Day, but failed to get the endorsement of the union, leaving an opening for high school students to carry on their struggle. On May Day, Seattle students should walk out of their schools and show support for their teachers' efforts.

Waffling on Single-Payer and Trump Resistance, Feinstein Faces Angry Boos

On this matter, signs show that Feinstein is indeed out-of-step with constituents and colleagues alike. A poll out earlier this month found 61 percent of respondents support "a federally funded health insurance system that covered every American," while Rep. John Conyers' (D-Mich.) Medicare-for-All bill has more legislative support than ever before. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has gotten big applause for his forthcoming Medicare-for-All proposal, and in fact even found widespread support for universal healthcare deep in Trump country.

Education Sec. Betsy DeVos Graduation Speech Met by Boos at Historically Black College
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was repeatedly booed and heckled Wednesday when she addressed graduating seniors at Bethune-Cookman University, a historically black college in Florida. Many students turned their backs on DeVos.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos: "Dr. Jackson, Board of Trustees, thank you so very, very much for this great honor and privilege. I am honored to become a Wildcat. And it’s a real honor and privilege to be with you as we celebrate the Bethune-Cookman University Class of 2017."
As the booing of Betsy DeVos grew louder, school President Edison Jackson interrupted her commencement address to issue a warning to students.
Edison Jackson: "If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you."
Despite the warning, many students kept booing with their backs turned to DeVos. More than 60,000 people had signed petitions opposing the selection of DeVos as commencement speaker at Bethune-Cookman University. DeVos was widely criticized in February when she said historically black colleges and universities are "real pioneers when it comes to school choice." HBCUs were established because black students were prohibited from attending public colleges and universities throughout much of the United States’s history.

Oregon votes on whether to reject a Calgary company's fossil fuel project
An Oregon county votes Tuesday on whether to block a massive natural gas project proposed by a Canadian company with public support from the White House.
A May 16 ballot measure in Coos County, Oregon seeks to stop the $13 billion Jordan Cove Energy Project, a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility by Calgary energy company Veresen, which is set to be bought by another Calgary-based firm, Pembina Pipeline Corp.
Ballot measures are a form of direct democracy in Oregon, where citizens can vote on initiatives if enough signatures are obtained. The measure, which the state legislature can repeal or amend with a majority vote, calls for the ban of fossil fuels being transported through the county that aren't being used for local power, heating and transportation.
The measure is up against a powerful backer: U.S. President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser, who has met with the company to strategize how to push the project through.
Jordan Cove, which would be fed by a proposed 373-kilometre pipeline bringing gas from Western Canada to the northwest U.S. state, would be “the largest single private investment in the history of southern Oregon,” according to the company. It would create 4,000 temporary construction jobs over five years and 240 permanent “high-paying” jobs, says the company.
But its opponents say it "would become the single largest greenhouse gas emitter in the entire state of Oregon and use eminent domain to take U.S. citizens' property."
"Owned by a Canadian firm, the company will take private property from U.S. citizens to benefit Canadian shareholders," reads a website by Coos Commons Protection Council, which is backing the petition....

So, our call from Africa and from the so-called Global South, what people call the developing countries, to the people of the United States right now is that we do not judge you on the basis of what a crazy president has just done. We will judge you by how you respond to President Trump. And we call on the people of the United States today to mobilize the biggest-ever civil disobedience against the president of the United States. We’ve seen some inspiring things already since his election. And I think right now we have to call on the people of the United States to muster the boldest, peaceful, strong civil disobedience to put pressure on him, such that he might have to be humbled to go back and reverse his decision.

..way back when i once heard that blame spirals downward. i think this applies in the above case. when in fact what is known to all here is that the electoral processes are corrupt. when we all here know that it wasn't the voting that that defeated clinton but the electoral collage. where we all here know that is set up by the states where the democrats have conceded power to the republicans via their disastrous policies.
..yet for all that is known it is those voters looking for a bit of justice who are stilled blamed.

Back in the United States, Hawaii has become the first U.S. state to enact laws to carry out the landmark 2015 Paris climate accord. On Tuesday, Hawaii Governor David Ige signed into law two bills designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions statewide and to improve soil health and promote carbon sequestration. The move comes after President Trump announced he was pulling the United States out of the 2015 Paris climate accord, sparking widespread domestic and international outrage.

NICK DEARDEN: Sure, so we have—we used to have the G8, the eight most powerful countries in the world, that came together once a year in order to make decisions that affected the whole world. And that forum was set up broadly, because world leaders at that time didn’t want to discuss these things in a more democratic and sovereign forum, like the United Nations. They wanted to undermine those global cooperation forums. That’s why they set up things like the G8, to control energy supplies and so on.
The G20 was when, during the financial crisis, the G8 realized that actually they needed to bring more countries on board if they were going to hold sway in the world. So they brought extra countries on board, like Saudi Arabia, like Argentina, like Turkey, like Mexico, but they’re still—they still represent the most powerful leaders on Earth. And they discuss everything from the global economy to terrorism, to aid and development, to migration—the big issues that affect everybody in the world.
Now, of course, with Donald Trump, and also some of the other nationalists who are going to be here, like Erdogan of Turkey and so on, you have a breach in the unity of those global elites. They don’t agree with each other anymore. And so, this is going to be a very different G20 to any that we’ve seen before, because normally they come out with a nice communiqué, a nice statement, that kind of says, "Yeah, we’re really worried about all this stuff, but we’re going to continue with these policies that benefit big business. The market knows best"—all the stuff we’ve seen for so long. But what you’re going to find with this summit is a really serious disagreement. And one of the big concerns that Angela Merkel has is that they don’t come out with meaningful communiqué at all. She’s going to be talking about free trade, migration and climate change. We know that she doesn’t agree with Trump on any of those issues.
So you’re going to see, this is probably the most significant G20 there has ever been, because you really have a global elite divided on itself as to the best way forward. And we’ll be watching in the coming days to see what comes out of that. But I think one of the big feelings here in the countersummit is, as long as those global elites are divided on the way forward, as long as we know that they don’t have the solution to the world’s problems, the people need to take center stage, because it’s only mass movements of people at this moment that can avert the catastrophe of runaway climate change or military buildup.

GOP Unveils Revised Health Bill to Gut Medicaid While Cutting Taxes
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell unveiled a revised plan Thursday to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, and is once again facing opposition from within his own party. On Thursday, Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky said they would oppose even putting the new bill to a vote. The measure would gut Medicaid by over $700 billion through 2026, while providing massive tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. Republicans are facing sustained grassroots resistance to their plans. On Thursday, 11 interfaith leaders, including the North Carolina NAACP president, Reverend William Barber, were arrested outside Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office protesting the latest version of the Republican healthcare plan. This is Traci Blackmon, executive minister of justice and witness ministries for the United Church of Christ.

That's funny, but fracking is generally done on land. Plus, they frack, get some oil, and then move somewhere else. Offshore rigs are designed to take from large oil deposits and stay there for the long term. It is a much more expensive business than fracking.
