9 Killed, Over 20 Injured in St Petersburg Metro Blast

https://www.rt.com/news/383202-st-petersburg-blast-metro/

"A suspected bomb blast inside a car on the St Petersburg Metro system has killed 9 passengers and injured over 20 others. The entire transit system is shut down as bomb squads and rescuers respond to the emergency."

There are reports of a second, unexploded shrapnel-bomb being found in another metro station nearby.

Shit. I have been thinking for awhile that it is only a matter of time before this would happen.

Posting a three day old attack piece after this terrorist attack is insensitvie at the least. The reaction to this is in stark relieve to the sentiment expressed by some on this site that "we are all Charlie Hebdo"

It is apparent that some countries citizens are not worthy of respect, especially I guess if they live in Putin's hometown.

6079_Smith_W

It is the Russia thread, FFS. If we observed a period of mourning when it came to attacks or tragedies in some other countries there would be no posting at all. I don't recall a moratorium on criticism of Obama after Orlando.

Never mind that the note of respect is that no one has claimed it was a false flag, which is more deference than some get.

lagatta4

I don't even the two issues are related; I'm certainly shocked and sad about the terror attack in St Petersburg. Criticising a government does not indicate a lack of fellow-feeling for the people in a given country. A still better example would be 9-11. A lot of solidarity was expressed to New Yorkers and everyone touched in the US (and elsewhere, as people from many countries worked in that complex) but we sure as hell didn't stop criticising Dubya Bush. In some ways the attacks were far more personal, in particular about his low intelligence. Nobody thinks Vladimir Putin is stupid.

Seven current and former U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed with Reuters the existence of two confidential documents obtained from a Russian government think tank controlled by Vladimir Putin. Those documents respectively reveal a plan to assist Donald Trump in winning the 2016 presidential election and a subsequent effort to undermine faith in the American electoral system.

. . . .

The documents lie at the heart of U.S. intelligence conclusions that a concerted and intensive effort, using “fake news” and cyber attacks against Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic Party, was underway by Russia. The acquired documents provide a concise framework and rationale for the Kremlin’s covert actions. They had been prepared by the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies in Moscow, run by former senior Russian foreign intelligence officials handpicked by Putin’s office.

kropotkin1951

So the smoking gun is a report by a Moscow based think tank.

I still doubt if the Russians actually had any real effect on the outcome of the US election. But if they did then the US getting Trump is just rewards for the US saddling Russia with Boris Yeltsin.

kropotkin1951

Since this is a Russia thread I have to ask should this Russian parliamentarian be tried for treason or at least stripped of his office? Personally I think he should be thrown out of office but I can see the case that he was conspiring with a foreign power to overthrow his government.

An interesting thing happened in Washington recently, and it had nothing to do with Beltway politics, Democrats vs. Republicans, or any of the other standard fare for the middle of the week in mid-January. Rather, a relatively small, little publicized event took place at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a prominent liberal-leaning think tank in Washington.

The event, "Russia's Opposition in a Time of War and Crisis," featured prominent Russian liberal opposition parliamentarian (member of the Russian Duma) Ilya Ponomarev, a noted critic of Russian President Putin, providing a detailed presentation regarding the current political climate in Russia, and the potential for the ousting or overthrow of the Russian government. Yes, you heard that right. A Russian elected official came to the United States to give a talk about how best to effect regime change in his own country.

At this point, the question is not so much whether what Ponomarev did was improper. The much more pressing issue is whether or not, by making this presentation in Washington precisely at the moment of heightened tensions between the US and Russia, Ponomarev has committed treason. While this may seem a rather extreme characterization, it is in fact quite appropriate.

Huh.  But when some pitiful troops and 1970's weaponry parade through the streets of Latvia, that's some kind of unbearable provocation for Russia.

Similarly, if South Korea holds military exercises, it's a practice for INVASION of DPRK, but when DPRK tests their new dirty nuke in defiance of the UN, that's just them preparing for the inevitable.

I sometimes wonder if the Left is really "anti-war", or if they're OK with war so long as their preferred team wins.  Otherwise, why are some unnecessary war "games" cause for concern, but some similarly unnecessary war "games" cause for renewed solidarity?

kropotkin1951

Well at least some people on the left think about being anti-war unlike the centrist NATO boosters who just blindly follow along with every new invasion. This little video says everything about our propaganda coverage of military parades.

That's a very interesting article, Josh, thanks for the link. Of course, the author is a former NSA analyst, and thus a tool of the deep state, but he does seem to know what's going on in the NSA now, and it sure doesn't sound good for Trump.

This article raised a question in my mind that I wonder if anyone else has thought of. This is the paragraph that got me thinking.

John Schindler wrote:
Second, someone might recount a conversation with one of the individuals the DO is interested in. This seems to be the scenario behind the recent sensational story about how Jared Kushner—the president’s son-in-law, all-purpose adviser, and former publisher of Observer—is said to have asked Sergei Kislyak, Russia’s ambassador in Washington, to use his embassy’s secure communications to talk to Moscow. NSA reportedly intercepted a conversation between Kislyak and the Kremlin in which the ambassador relayed Kushner’s request to his bosses back home.

Now, isn't it very likely that Kislyak would have used the most secure channel he had available to communicate Kushner's request back to Moscow? If he did, then doesn't that mean the leaking of the Kushner story alerts the Russians that their most secure communication channel has been compromised? Wouldn't that be a very bad thing for the NSA?
