Wikitribune - Fighting fake news!

Bravo & wonderful!

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is launching a news website

The founder of Wikipedia says he's on a mission to fight fake news.

Jimmy Wales is launching a news platform that will bring journalists together with an army of volunteer fact checkers. He's calling the site "Wikitribune."

Its main goal? Fighting fake news.

Mr. Magoo

It's an interesting idea, but it totally misses the point about why people re-post and re-tweet and re-blog fake news.  It's not because there's not, actually, reputable news left anywhere in the world.

So the first time they publish a (reputable, reviewed, fact-checked and fair) story about how the flu vaccine won't make you autistic, the anti-vaxxers are just going to include WikiTribune in their long list of -- ready for the irony? -- "fake news".

That said, I can't wait until the first time they weigh in on some bone of contention here at babble.  Might be time to give my popcorn popper a good cleaning.

Actually it's quite simple. If you read something you don't like or agree with, then obviously it's fake news.

Business model[edit]

Wikitribune is an organisation that is to be funded by donors, and never by selling advertising space. The more funds they raise, the more journalists they can employ.[6] Crowdfunding opened on 25 April 2017.[7] Supporters are being asked to pay £10 or $15 per month,[8] but access to the news will be free.[7] It has been stated that having no shareholders, advertisers or subscribers will reduce commercial pressures and that paying members will be able to suggest topics.[5] Supporters who donate to the site will also help decide which subjects the site will focus on.[3]

Journalists will need to provide the source of a fact or provide full transcripts and recordings of interviews.[6] The public will be able to modify and update articles; however, the update will only go live once approved by staff or trusted volunteers.[3][6]

People named as involved in the project as advisors to Jimmy Wales include Lily ColeJeff JarvisGuy Kawasaki, and Lawrence Lessig.[6]

Wales' firm Jimmy Group, which he incorporated earlier in April 2017, has filed a trademark request for "Wikitribune" with the Intellectual Property Office, which was examining the request as of April 25.[9]

Huh?

Basically, then, anyone who ponies up some munnee is basically an advertiser, except that that WikiTribune doesn't even have to run an ad.

To put it another way, "MoneyPeople" will get an extra say in things.  THAT SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEMS.

But what's the difference between Mensch and the NY Times who perhaps both sometimes publish bullshit.
