Donald Trump Jr launches rant against London Mayor Sadiq Khan after London terror attack

The President’s son dug out an old article, which quoted the Mayor as saying terror attacks were ‘part and parcel’ of living in a major city.

Think about it. What does Daesh hate more than anything else? Girls being free to be happy, open and confident, dancing to their own song. That's what they decided to attack, to try to destroy.

This world scares the living shit out of me.

Mr. Magoo

I don't at all disagree.  I do believe that Daesh hates those girls for their freedoms.  I know that "they hate us for our freedoms" was used as a bit of a sarcastic shut-up at one time, but unless tween girls have been occupying Syria as of late, I'm hard pressed to otherwise explain why Daesh would intentionally choose this venue for the killing.

The only other thing I can think of (and it's not exclusive of that first explanation; it could be just added value) is that Daesh seems to need to behave in increasingly brutal ways if they want to get themselves plenty of "above the fold" headlines.

Years ago, "ISIS Executes Traitors In Cold Blood" was enough.  Now they have to push people off of buildings or shoot them with anti-aircraft guns.  In five years, they'll be feeding them to radioactive sharks.  So, for maximum newsworthiness, I guess it's kids now.

Everything We Know About Salman Abedi, The Manchester Suicide Bomber

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/24/everything-know-salman-abedi-...

"Suicide bomber Salman Abedi is believed to have traveled to Syria and became radicalised before returning to the UK to cause carnage at a gig in the city where he was born. The son of Libyan parents who reportedly fled their native country and sought refuge in the UK, he is thought to have come back to Britain from Libya just days before the massacre.

Abedi's sister, Jomana, suggested he carried out the attack for revenge on US air strikes in Syria. 'I think he saw children - Muslim children - dying everywhere, and wanted revenge,' she told the Wall Street Journal. 'He saw the explosives America drops on children in Syria, and he wanted revenge. Whether he got that is between him and God."

So this is a family with a long-known and proven history of involvement in Islamic extremism. And yet he is allowed to carry on and fly under the radar and carry out the attack."

The son returned to Manchester but became a well known danger to society. Members of Libyan exile society in Manchester reported him at least five times as a dangerous Jihadi, to the local authorities. There were no reactions."

Post Brexit Trade Deals - Who Will be the Winners and Losers?

quote:

The U.K. has been completely liberalized since Thatcher's time and that means that we have been completely open, all investment opportunities here have been completely open to transnational investors. Whether it's a private sector, like firms being sold off, it's always open to transnational investors and the result of that is that we don't own anything anymore in this country because it's been in that direction for a long time. It also applies when there are privatizations in the public sector, those investment opportunities are also open to transnational investors. So, this complete liberalization is to suit the needs of the city of London because the transnational financial services there, we have to be the global model for liberalization because that's what they want globally so that's what drives U.K. policy.

There's little attention paid to workers and to labor aspect of the economy really. If you notice, there's less and less reporting on workers as the shift in reporting has gone towards business perspectives and business needs. Tom Mills, in his book on the BBC really points this out how there aren't any industrial reporters anymore, it's all business focused. Work is really central to our lives, it's central to how we spend our time, much of our lives in time. It's also central to our survival and labor's also the fundamental part of the economy. The left pays insufficient attention to this but the right, as in big business, certainly knows the importance of driving down labor standards. Obviously this happens through two main mechanisms, is to shift work overseas to cheaper labor areas or to bring in, move across borders, workers who will work more cheaply. That's inherently undermines labor standards as well. Both of these are reinforced in trade agreements and facilitated in international trade agreements.

And of course Morrissey weighed in, in his particular tone-deaf way:

What the intervening years have proved, however, is that the only thing Morrissey understood was himself. His latest public intervention, a Facebook post on the Manchester Arena bombing, appeared to suggest immigration was to blame (the culprit was born in Manchester of immigrant parents, just like Morrissey), that politicians are never victims of terror (just shy of a year on from the murder of Jo Cox), that Sadiq Khan had not specifically named Isis in his condemnation of the killings, and that “in modern Britain everyone seems petrified to officially say what we all say in private.”

More pointedly, Morrissey was born in Manchester of Irish parents, and two decades ago there was huge bomb damage to a district in central Manchester, ascribed to the IRA...

And he's up there with PETA in seriously damaging the image of vegans and animal welfare activists...

Mourning Manchester: Forging a New Politics of Grief

We are all grieving the children lost in the suicide bombing of a concert in Manchester this week.

The global media is remembering these young lives, lost in an unimaginably brutal assault. They have names, faces, personalities, friends, preferences, histories and families. We see their community members weeping for them. We see their loved ones kneeling, planting flowers at the site where their lives were taken.

They are portrayed in their full humanity; the abrupt ending of their lives is a sign of a violence that has no place in our world.

quote:

Yet this terror age must give rise to a new politics of grief.

A new politics of grief would not allow these deaths to be churned into approval ratings for right-wing politicians.

A new politics of grief would not allow the memory of those lost lives to be used as fuel to line the pockets of arms dealers and dictatorships, or to generate an unquestioning support for intensified militarism.

A new politics of grief would not be used to bludgeon us into silence, nor to put a lid on our critical faculties.

Instead, a politics of grief for this seemingly endless terror age would be one in which we think deeply, contextually and historically about the political conditions that give rise to a brutal attack like the one we saw in Manchester.

Terror in Britain: What Did the PM Know?

[Canada,] "Britain, France and the United States effectively destroyed Libya as a modern state. According to its own records, NATO [led by a Canadian RCAF General] launched 9,700 'strike sorties' of which more than a third hit civilian targets. They included fragmentation bombs and missiles with uranium warheads. The cites of Misurata and Sirte were carpet-bombed. UNICEF, the UN Children's organisation, reported a high proportion of the children killed were under the age of ten."

Oh, come on. There is only one poster who ever quotes her. The rest of us all realize she is a loon. Enough with the straw babblers.

Mr. Magoo

Also, enough with the "Russophobe" crap.

How is it that Russia is the only country on Earth with it's own 'phobes.  Every other country has "critics".

kropotkin1951

How is it that Islam is the only religion on Earth with it's own 'phobes?  Every other religion has "critics". Why is it homophobia and not dislike of gay people?

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

You're asking the wrong guy.  I don't think of critics of Islam as "Islamophobes".

Quote:
Why is it homophobia and not dislike of gay people?

Lots of people have asked that... most of them right wingers.  But I think it's a reasonable question.  I don't really have an answer, but I will say it seems to me that "Islamophobe" and "Russophobe" were just attempts to coat-tail on "homophobe".  I'd have been fine with "gay hater", FWIW.  I think that casting them as fearful, rather than just hateful, was some kind of attempt to embarrass them, and then it stuck.

kropotkin1951

Its easier to say Russophobe than Russian hater?

While your at it, why does every damn scandal have to have a "gate" tacked on to it? That annoys me far worse than someone saying Russophobe rather than Russian hater.

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

Then we're in violent agreement.

As I understand it, "Watergate" was the name of a hotel.  The scandal wasn't some scandal that had to do with "water" (hence, "watergate") so there's no good reason why a scandal having to do with (say) missiles, should be "Missilegate" or a scandal involving balloons should be "Balloongate".

voice of the damned

I think Magoo's point is that the term "Russophobia" is meant to imply that criticism of Russia indicates irrationality on the part of the critic. In other words, it's a pejorative term, masquerading as a neutral descriptive. Like, if I were to describe people who criticize the activities of Canadian mining companies, and those companies' government enablers, as "Canadaphobes". I don't think people on here would regard that as just a neutral term for "critics of Canadian policy".

Now, yes, you could argue that, in some cases, criticism of Russia is unwarranted, knee-jerk, whatever, so in those cases the term "Russophobia" might be applicable. Presumbaly, Magoo thinks that it is being overapplied, and I'd agree that it is, at least from certain quarters.

And, I suppose you could draw the comparison with "homophobia", though since I really can't think of a rational reason to oppose homosexuality in and of itself, the pejorative implications might be a bit more appropriate there(I'm still not entirely comfortable with the medical overtones, though).

As for the "-gate" suffix attached to scandals, as far as I can tell, that is simply meant to indicate that the event being disucssed is a scandal, not meant to cast aspersions on the people criticizing the politicians. If we were to start referring to any politician under a cloud of allegations as "Tricky [Whoever]", that might be a bit closer to a well-poisoning pejorative.

kropotkin1951

The difference is that our oligarchy controlled media do not vilify Canada for all its sins like it vilifies Russia for not just similar failings but for everything. The incessant nit picking at every little thing one can IMAGINE Russia might have done is Russophobia. Given that the phenomina includes the blanket condemnation of Russia at every opportunity no matter how remote the connection it's easy to see why it could be used it as a descriptor for over 90% of the Western media's coverage of international affairs.
