It's great that New Zealand doesn't use FPTP. If New Zealand used FPTP the National Party would have won a huge phoney FPTP majority. Using a fair electoral system, Labour is forming government with support from the Green Party and NZ First. Under FPTP, Labour and the Greens would have split the vote allowing National to "win" a phoney majority government.

Taken from the above link:

New Zealand's new prime minister called capitalism a "blatant failure", before citing levels of homelessness and low wages as evidence that "the market has failed" her country's poor.

Jacinda Ardern, who is to become the nation's youngest leader since 1856, said measures used to gauge economic success "have to change" to take into account "people's ability to actually have a meaningful life".

Good comment from the link that I copied out. BUT it has two flaws!!! First one is that capitalism has failed every single person except 1% of the population. Not just the homeless and low wage earners or the "monetary capital poor" in general!  Second is gauging economic success. Who cares about economic success? Not me! Success has absolutely nothing to do with money, materials, possesions or status. The only people who care about economic success are the capatalists.

This new PM of maybe the most isolated country in the world sounds like she wants to say what is morally right, but she probably has the corporations pointing a gun to her head so she's probably afraid of blowing what little she has already gained.

Actually, economic success features prominently in anti-capitalist criticism as well.  It's not like Occupy was fighting for the right to have more good friends and enjoy more beautiful sunsets.

So, the New Zealand First Party are now cherished allies in the struggle against capitalism? Their leader is now the Deputy PM and the Minister Of Foreign Affairs.

To put this is a Canadian context, imagine Kellie Leitch occupying those same positions in an NDP government.

yes you’re right! Sometimes I can be a little over the top and you caught me in an example. I should have articulated my position a little better. Good thing I’ve got you here. You can help me. However, having said that, when economists start talking about “economic success” or lack of (especially lack of), you know exactly what comes next!

Ardern wins majority government:

Quote:

The Labour leader won a thumping result in Saturday's election, winning Labour a parliamentary majority for the first time since electoral reforms in 1996.

With 97 per cent of the party vote counted, Ms Ardern's Labour was on 49 per cent of the vote, giving a return of 64 MPs in the 120-seat parliament.

She must now decide whether to keep governing with the Greens, which also increased its vote, or go it alone.

Even better is that the New Zealand First party was routed completely and failed to elect a single MP.

It's always great to hear such positive news. Ardern has impressed as a leader.

Ardern won such a massive victory because she, like China has, basically has eradicated Covid-19 in New Zealand. And if re-elected Premier next Saturday in BC, NDP Premier John Horgan should do the same.

Nice win.

No one is perfect but there is something very refreshing about having a middle-class leader, and a woman as well, as the boss, instead of elitist old white males who don't know when to quit, eh!
